Id suggest adding a metal bowl with water on top of the wood stove to add some humidity to the room. My family does that and it helps with the dryness which will inevitably hurt your beautiful monstera!

Agreed, my family had a cast iron kettle that sat on our wood stove for the same reason. I have also seen metal fans that sit on top, that the heat of the stove activates, and it helps to move the warmed air though your room.

Hi Becky! Certified horticulturist here - just wanted to mention that Monsteras like above average humidity, so I would keep close watch on yours. Being too close to a fireplace can really dry out the plant and because it's sentimental and so beautiful, I would hate for you to lose some or all of your plant baby! Love, love, love the fireplace and new tile! Your house is such a dream!

Yeah I was thinking the exact same thing! I think a humidifier or something behind the plant would make it ok to leave it there. Rhaphidophora tetrasperma on the shelf next to the fireplace probably needs higher humidity too.

Yes to 1970's craft videos!! Fireplace area looks great.

The only thing that is missing from the fireplace is a big pot of water to put humidity into the space. Plus this fireplace is better for an power outage or when you're snowed in. I remember being a kid ( and later when I lived in my childhood home as an Adult) my Mother always had hot water at the ready even when they put the bigger wood stove in the basement because she had a huge blue speckled pot on it. But she also used it to make chili and stews on cold days that simmered all day long and the best homemade spaghetti sauce was made by a Friend's Mom the same way. My Mother would have my little brother and myself pretend that we were like Little House on the Prairie, tho we lived more like the Big Woods lol. We made Maple syrup on snow and did art projects and she would read us chapters of the books. Something she always did at bedtime so in the afternoon it was special. But she also used an old Dutch oven to cook treats in or cook a chicken or roast on the stove top and the best was when she made popcorn for us on it. As much as my Brother and I didn't look forward to lugging wood to the basement every Summer or having to go down in the winter to bring it upstairs to feed the fire. It made memories that we will have forever and we were happy that we were so warm when so many other people had wait for the power to come back on to be warm. I still remember after big storms and outages, when all was restored, watching the news on the 19 inch black and white TV, on one of the 3 channels that worked in the middle of nowhere, horrified by the many people who froze to death, or lost their lives/ family's due to fires started by someone desperate to warm their family, using candles or the worst one whole family's lost to carbon monoxide from the old gas heaters.

Hey Becky, I watch all your videos. This is my first time commenting. This is one of my favorite video's you have posted. I got the biggest smile on my face when I saw you place the Readers Digest Complete Do-It-Yourself manual on your shelf. Hubby and I bought our first home in 1973 (we're so old) and we have/had a copy of that book. I'm not all about the retro vibe but you are so interesting and extremely talented that I love watching you work. Thanks for the many enjoyable hours watching what you do best.

Need to give Palmala a good wipe down now that you mention it. She's such a good plant and has been part of our family for about 7 years. I've been thinking about getting a stick figure family for our van that includes her because she was on our cross-country moving trip in said van. Putting the van on the van would be silly, but the van is on there in my heart.

Another vote for the pouffe! Back in the 70s, Mum made a simple square/cube pouffe out of a huge old Ayrshire X (red and white) cowskin "floormat" that she'd been given, but never really liked the colour and it didn't really fit in any room or with her decor. She cut the mat into a t-shape, similar to if you were making a paper cube in math class, and used shoe grade contact "cement" (not actually cement but a heavy duty glue that she used to half sole and heel our school shoes to get a bit more wear out of...) to glue it all together, then blanket stitched all of the edges with leather thonging. She left the last flap unglued so she could restuff if needed, then used old newspapers stacked up to stuff it, then stitched the last side closed. I remember it was solid and heavy as, but it was soft enough to sit on for a few hours without getting a sore bum, and ended up being about 2&1/2 foot cubed... she must've had that thing for about 30 years, and when it started looking a bit threadbare, she'd make slip covers for it and change the cover whenever she changed the decor... she was very handy with all sorts of things...🙂 🙃🐨🇦🇺

Totally agree. My heart sank a little when she waved them goodbye. Even getting one and using it as a candle or plant stand would have been cool. But I'm here for a whole lot more of them 🙂

i think this is officially my favorite TSG series of all time!! i just love becky and austin (and danny of course) and the HOUSE IS STUNNING!!

I watch these videos with my mom (she loves them) and she really wanted me to tell you to put that chair you had in your dressing room in your old house by the wood stove. She said it’d be such a comfy corner to sit in.

Seeing you two interact makes my heart all fuzzy and happy. And of course the house looks incredible.

I grew up in the 70's and I love all the retro finds you put into your decor. The shinny tiles will be easy to clean and they have the right colour. We've had a wood stove for thirty years, and we love it! Power can go out, not a problem, I even cooked on it. It's messy and alot of work, making everything dusty, but there is no heat like it! At the price of oil and electricity these days, people are going back to using wood. Our old house would be freezing without it as the oil furnace doesn't even come close to keeping the house warm. You'll just want to make sure to sweep your pipe once a year to get the build-up off to avoid cheminey fire. Job well done! Can't wait to see more rooms done!

Oh yes please do the 70s diy! But you have to follow the directions EXACTLY as written 😍

for your stereo, there is probably corrosion (oxidation) on the contacts in the volume control. get a can of deoxit contact cleaner, take the knobs off and spray the deoxit down the shaft of the controls. give it a few turns back and forth to help spread out the deoxit, and you should be good to go.

Ahww I also have a special bond with my monstera. When I moved to Amsterdam with my best friend, our moms came to help moving and bought us a tiny monstera as a housewarming gift. That was about 10 years ago and when we went our separate ways, we both took a piece of the monstera. We still have them and they're huuuuge beautiful plants now and a cute reminder of our fun time living together 🥰

The record player is awesome! That's how we had our playlists back in the day. Fireplace came out really nice ♥️💙

Becky, you are amazing.....your home looks like the one I grew up in. You may want to put a kettle on the stove to add moister in-to the house, wood stove can really dry your skin and sinuses out.

Have you thought of doing a bio ethanol insert? You could get one of the retro stoves you like or maybe even gut the electric one you have and just put the insert inside. It doesn’t create smoke or anything and it’s how I’ve gotten away with not fixing the flue on my wood burning fireplace in my 1935 cottage lol $500 fix vs $3500 repair? Yes, please!

Love the thought of fixing the other fireplace with an insert believe me to many of us Love it for an insert not to have been made somewhere to change it into either a gas or electric fireplace...I'd be researching that more than anything else...🤔🧐 Eventually that original Fireplace will be worth some very Big bucks...😲🥳🎉💝

I love this. The only thing I’d change is to use light neutrals and lime wash the textured wall behind the stove to lean into the difference and make it more of a feature than an odd choice of the previous owner.

as someone who doesn’t know a lot about diy, building, interior design, etc., i find it so fun watching these videos bc i learn so much and it doesn’t necessarily feel educational it just feels fun! (also turns out i really love wood and warm tones in houses!)

You won’t learn about interior design here because interior design is architectural based. It’s not decorating, styling, furnishing, DIYing, etc

Becky, I graduated from High School in 1979. My parents built a house in 1976. They put in two wood burning stoves almost exactly like what you and Austin just installed. I’d say that’s ‘70’s styling!

We have a wood-burning stove that fits into our fireplace and I have a beautiful wood mantel over it you know you just don't get that kind of heat, they. I'm hoping you got a wood-burning stove that has a fan and pushes the heat out it's wonderful, also I don't know if you have hands and fans in that room but with high ceilings like that it's ideal to have fan that pushes the hot air down.

For the awesome RETRO RECORD PLAYER: My partner said the potentiostat is clogged with carbon buildup on the contacts within the dial. There is a spray they used to sell that you spray a bit and then twist the knob to and fro to coat the contacts. He said you could find it online, but maybe also at Guitar Center or a audiophile hi-fi stereo shop (if those exist ANYWHERE anymore), or maybe call around at a small appliance repair shop (like a sewing machine, vacuum, etc type place).

I have one of those mid century modern acorn fireplaces, chased a pick up truck with it perched on a load of demolition trash to the dump to get it... It's in my back yard. Works great.

First off, your Intro was hilarious! So well done. Love the outcome…idea?….use your cherished retro fireplace outside. Maybe even a sunken patio. 😊

I would definitely choose option B, and lightly wet sand it to remove some of the gloss. I've done this and it's easy and the result was beautiful.

It looks very nice! I was wondering about other fireplace tools you need (brush, bucket) and the storage for wood. Maybe where the plant is you can create a nice low cabinet to store that (and have the plant on top) or even a nice reading by the fire nook putting visions on it. Just some ideas!

As a Canadian I feel that the dialects change from west to east. I can pick out a Newfoundlander just by listening to how they talk. Lol

There are cool cast iron humidifiers made to work with the fireplace... dragons, trains a moose! A good place to start is Plow & Hearth, we've had ours for 20+ years. Also this looks amazing!!

The pots on the stereo/volume knobs are likely dirty. You can clean those. If you needed to replace for new ones I bet you could do that yourself, too. Good luck!

I was about to suggest the same thing. A can of deoxit & a few minutes to clean the volume, bass, treble & balance pots & it’ll be working almost like new!

The 70s fireplace can be used outdoors. It's so cool, I see why you like it.

One of my biggest dreams (and goals) is to purchase myself a cargo van, but turn it into a cartoon-accurate version of the Mystery Machine from Scooby Doo. Not only paint the outside, but then have the back/inside of the van turned into an amazing, early 70's wonderland. Every time I watch TSG I imagine Becky designing the back of it. I agree! I feel it’s nice that both tile and wood have their own texture and different size, so it doesn’t look like a new patch of wood, but so similar in color, they look like pretty sisters! ☺️

The space looks great. I think that is the best tile choice and might be easier to clean because of the glossy finish.

When I was younger, the house we lived in was older and from the 70s. It had a big old cast iron woodstove in the living room. So even though this isn't your dream stove, it's still similar to what they had then. I think the woodstove was original to the house?

@MaryAnn Kom I remember one winter at camp, the cabin got so hot (turned out it was a chimney fire....), but it was soooo hot in the cabin, that we were fanning the door to let in cold air. He was yelling at us for letting the cold air in....but it was like 100°F inside! We went for a walk down the road to cool off!

the corner beside the stove is asking for a firewood niche! stacked logs in a built in cavity so you have the beautiful floor to ceiling wall of logs ends! Would be so stunning and add such a nice dimension!

Though I love your replacement I really loved the original 😕 It’s still amazing though. It’s a shame there is so many rules when even having just the simple wood burner fireplace. In England they are trying to ban them altogether. I loved your video Becky 🤍
