Finding Our Heart - A story about the Uluru Statement for young Australians

Author Thomas Mayor reads his new book, ‘Finding Our Heart - A story about the Uluru Statement for young Australians. This book follows Mayor’s first book, ‘Finding the Heart of the Nation - The journey of the Uluru Statement towards Voice, Treaty and Truth’ that tells the stories of the author and twenty Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and ultimately, why the Uluru Statement campaign is vital to Australia as it strives to reckon with its colonial past.

I am doing an assignment as part of an Indigenous Perspectives unit for education at university and I am so excited to be able to share your book in the future with classrooms. I bought for my 5 yearold step daughter and you have beautifully worded it in a way children can comprehend. Thank you so much and well done

I hope there is a treaty and Australia gets an authentic indigenous voice in the parliament, one that is purely informed by indigenous knowledge and spoken from a pure indigenous tongue. The last thing we need is another white person putting words into an indigenous persons mouth. Peace.

The heart of this nation should be LIBERTY including the liberty to disagree with with you The heart of this nation must be LIBERTY and Responsible eco conservation And quite frankly This should not be taught in schools because this is too indoctrinating of children Politics should NEVER be forced on children by schools or government Whether you agree with it or not

This book teaches the truth - that First Nations people have been treated terrible and ignored. That our special place and our political voice is not yet recognised in the rule book for us all: the Australian constitution. Don’t preach liberty to me, as a way of opposing fairness for the Indigenous polity, while the constitution gives power to the Federal Parliament to make special laws about a race of people in Section 51(xxvi). The race power has only been used to make laws about Indigenous people, often to our detriment, not always for our benefit. This power, while we are not recognised and given a voice to the parliament, is unfair - there is no liberty. Indigenous people are merely 3% of the population. We are voiceless in this Democracy. How can you argue with this, when you know that we are so horribly disproportionately incarcerated and have a life expectancy of almost ten years less? Children are taught politics in schools. And they should be. They must learn how our political system works and they should be taught to think. You were taught politics in school, no doubt. You were probably taught the same as me. We were taught that my Indigenous forefathers were savages and unintelligent. We were taught that the white colonial forefathers were explorers, scientists, builders, and my peoples saviours. We were taught that Captain Cook discovered this continent. We were taught wrong. My book should be in every classroom and every home. Maybe in the next generation of Australians, the adults in charge will hear First Nations opinions before they make decisions. Maybe they will hear their conscience and listen to the custodians of this land. That’s all we ask. And what a gift this would be to our children - the gift of fairness - the gift of liberty.
