Finding Older Termite Damage and Newer Old Damage.

Ойын-сауық

Inspection revealed some old termite damage and then newer old damage on an addition that wouldn’t be the same age as original damage so this proves colony moved or newer colony hit newer addition and house should be treated as a precaution even though live activity wasn’t found. Owners did opt to treat this.

Some companies seem like they do. I find old damage in maybe 1 out of 5 and live termites in 1 out of 20. Not a huge money maker for us.

How do you identify old versus active? I live in AZ and found some damage when sheetrock was pulled out after some water damage. The home had termites 3 years ago and was treated (by the previous owner), so I know there could be old damage not found. I have a few pest companies coming out to check/quote but would love to be educated myself so I don’t get taken advantage of. edit: I have not found any other signs of termites but I know that doesn’t mean they couldn’t be there. I’m going to get preventative treatment if they aren’t present too.

First part of older and not live activity is just the evidence and no live termites and color of the shelter/mud tubes(moisture or lack of) I’m up in Illinois so tube substrate will be different. Now granted they can move to other places and depending on what was used for treatment as to whether colony was killed or just chased off. There are more varieties of termites where your at than here and a good professional needs to inspect. My personal experience, don’t use big companies. They aren’t as passionate about their work and skimp on chemicals.

Is really dry & flaky/crusty tubes an old infestation?

Yes in most locations that would be old. In areas with very sandy soil like Florida the tubes will be brittle and dryer because they are part sand and then might appear old but they might be active.
