CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Jamal (Rob Brown) gets kicked out of class after challenging Prof. Crawford (F Murray Abraham), and winning, in a game of authors and literary quotes.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In the spirit of his Oscar-winning Good Will Hunting, Gus Van Sant directs this tale of the unlikely bond that develops between an aging, reclusive novelist named Forrester (Sean Connery) -- who hasn't written anything since winning a Pulitzer Prize decades earlier -- and Jamal (Rob Brown), a 16-year-old with a hidden desire to be a writer. When Jamal is cited for his athleticism in basketball by an elite Manhattan prep school, he is forced to adapt to an environment far from his South Bronx upbringing, and a small mishap leads him to the eccentric, uneasy Forrester. After their initial apprehension of each other, they begin to fuel each other's fire for writing, and become unlikely friends despite their ages and backgrounds. Forrester's devotion to Jamal becomes enhanced when he must defend allegations of plagiarism enforced by Professor Crawford (F. Murray Abraham), jeopardizing Jamal's future. The film also features Anna Paquin, Busta Rhymes, and Zane Copeland, Jr..

such a powerful movie that I'm lucky to have watched during my formative years, helped me to come to term that a rebellion isn't always necessarily bad, it's not about being disruptive, or even destructive, it's about standing up by the values you believe

It takes a real man to know things, and a better man to know better than just knowing things. If that were my teacher I would have been thrown out of class on day one. A great clip!
Jamal stood up to Crawford to let him know what a jerk was! As a teacher, he was suppose to teach, educate, and help. Not puttin' your student on the spotlight and embarrass him/her. Jamal was givin' Crawford a taste of his own medicine. Then Crawford felt so embarassed, he tells Jamal to "get out" of classroom. At least Jamal knows more than Crawford. It`s the key to a family without bloodline.

Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. ~ Jesus Christ, Matt 5:43-48

Oh please, there are people of low character in every profession-including those with influence. Everyone has the story of "that one professor"- but that doesn't mean we need an "educations [sic] system overhaul."
@miyamotoclan5054
6 жыл бұрын
You'd be correct on that premise alone. However, when you measure the product (average student) relative to the success of other regions and the exorbitant costs of education then one may argue successfully that an overhaul is long past due. BTW, don't bother telling me to "GET OUT" because I'm not leaving.... :)
@HerePepPep
6 жыл бұрын
Great, an "overhaul." What would that entail exactly? Or do we just throw words like "overhaul" and "reform" around haphazardly?
@miyamotoclan5054
6 жыл бұрын
Here_Pep_Pep , an overhaul entails the following: Education vs Learning: Academia/primary/secondary education often favor or emphasize rote memorization over creativity. The pendulum should swing a few degrees back in favor of creative problem solutions. Proper incentives for teachers/students: Teacher's salaries are disconnected from job performance. Professors in academia have given up any pretense of actually teaching their students. The fulfillment or requisite of time vs merit in academia attracts certain types of students that wish to rely on credentials versus ability. Public schools indulge in wastefulness and have made it difficult for private schools to exist/compete. Private schools would teach skills that were in demand. - Adam Smith Modernization: Through competition, technology ultimately affords cheaper and more efficient application over time (ref. Moore's Law). However, education continues to rise exponentially. Technology (application of knowledge) should afford cheaper costs/prices. Think Kan Academy here on KZread vs antiquated school systems that still use punch cards to grade tests. The education system needs to embrace technological applications instead of resembling Luddites who wish to protect their jobs and salaries. This protectionism only results in educational welfare for faculty where the costs in inefficiency are passed onto the taxpayer. Macroeconomics: Gov't-backed educational loans are far too convenient for young adults to acquire credit. They lack the understanding of compounding debt over a lifetime. This easy credit leads directly to the inflation of degrees (greater fool theory), ever-rising tuition costs (supply/demand), and a 1.3 trillion-dollar education bubble (2017) that could have dire consequences for our economy as a whole. Hence you can't print prosperity out of misguided altruism. More focus on STEM fields: Society will reap what it sows; e.g. any society that expends much of its educational resources to train athletes who "play games" will be at a disadvantage when economically competing with other nations for scarce resources. Training our youth to be entertainers is a sure way to lower GDP or shrink an economy. Thespians and athletes don't produce wealth for a society. They consume it through the proliferation of bread and circuses.
The quote recognition battle reminds me of Good Will Hunting. "Do you like apples?" Well William Forrester read to you my words and not his. "How you like them apples?" Matt Damon was in this movie at the end too. Lol!

Ownage for the professor. I love it
The professor says 'Perhaps your skills extend a bit farther than basketball.", and then Jamal misquotes him as saying 'Your skills extend farther than the basketball court.', which is different as 'the basketball court' is a place, so 'farther' could relate to distance from that, albeit in a poetic sense. This movie is such a gem. Totally overlooked and completely underrated. Indecently, this film was made during a time before the identity politics that permeates (and ruins) today's popular culture. I wonder what will happen if Jamal challenged Will from Good Will Hunting?
@langkarenga3233
4 жыл бұрын
I don’t think Jamal would, or Will would challenge Jamal for that matter. They are of the same ilk, cut from the same cloth. Will was a lower middle class guy from south Boston that often had to mask his abnormal intelligence to fit in with his friends and community. Jamal was an African American teenager who was only valued for his athletic prowess (which most black people are) and not his Profound intelligence. He had to hide his interest in Classical Literature and history in order to fit in with his friends and community in the South Bronx. Both characters are almost the same, (primarily bc this is written by Gus Vansant). In the bar scene in Good Will Hunting the Harvard Grad student only saw Will as his social class, not a person who had thoughts or inquiries. That proved to be his downfall. In this scene with Professor Crawford and Jamal Wallace the professor clearly only sees Jamal for his athletic capabilities and not for his intellect. It goes back to many people thinking that minority students only get into institutions like that bc of athletic scholarships or affirmative action. And like with Wills situation, Crawford was blindsided and humiliated, his students probably lost respect for him as well. So all he could do after that was bully Jamal into submission bc of his lack of financial support (bc he couldn’t best him intellectually). I don’t think Will or Jamal would “Challenge” each other, I think they would have mutual respect for each other’s abnormal intelligences and maybe converse in a civil matter. Statistically their intellects are so rare that they probably would never meet a person on their level in a casual setting, so if they met I think it would be a breath of fresh air for them.
"Y'all wanna see a dead body?"
This is a great movie. A bit atypical for Sean Connery but very, very good!
I love this scene showing the difference between an entitled man who has tenure and a teacher who wants to teach and see his students succeed himself. As the famous quote says. "Those who cannot do, teach." If i'm not mistaken in the wording of the quote.
