One thing i have done with my ancestry data is to sort the 3-5th cousin matches into known lineages. The remainder thrown into “unknown” category. After i had our mom tested 2/3 of the unknowns were related to mom. But in 5 matches i had more %match than mom in 2 segments instead of just one segment with mom. This lends itself to a possibility that mom and dad could be a 10th cousin or something. Also as a result i found 3 lineages had a relationship with a single couple (2 directly and one of distant cousins marrying progeny of this ancestor) that lived in late 18th century, with the implications of making my maternal grandparents 5th cousins.

Yup! I'm missing one set of great grandparents. (Though one 2nd gt grandmother is fairly certain- even without matches - my matches are similar to those of a known 3C) One match seems to be a 2C1R (leaving me to determine which of 8 sons sired my grandmother.) BUT this line takes up a large proportion of my previously unknown matches- right place, right time, including descendants of their ancestors and siblings thereof. (Whenever I was in doubt, I'd think: well: if she was my 4ggm, had she any siblings? Descendants of her brother in my matches. 6th ggf? 35 descendants of his siblings. ) To keep it interesting, the husband of the mentioned 2gtgm bore a name which none of us supposed descendants can relate to anyone in our matches. We can only assume an NPE. No such close matches (but there shouldn't be. ) However most of my remaining unknowns- again, rt time & place- are from 4 family lines, with a good number of suggested 3C & 4C. Lots of intermarriage among those families, & pedigree collapse, but specfic candidates for mother & father are suggested by cumstances : "his" grandson married "her" youngest daughter- so they appear in a matche's tree...cMs too high for me to not be related... (Again, descendants of remote relatives are appropriately represented in matches, with lower cMs. For now I am left with 2 options: either this couple are parents my NPE, or that guy is not my ancestor!

look at their ethnicity for help on what side of the family you related on, look at the shared matches to know what side of the family your related on, make a seperate tree for their family so you can do your own research. its hard but possible

I did a DNA test through a certain ancestry company. When I download the data it was a text file. Is that useful at all?

Google what to do to upload it to a company. It's really easy (but I don't remember how to do it!)

I also used a certain ancestry company, downloaded the data... then I used the instructions here to upload it to MyHeritage - www.myheritage.com/dna/upload/256569911 I have been able to find a few more insights about my lines by having the information on both the testing site I used and then that data uploaded to MyHeritage. I am still thinking, though, I'll need to test on at least one more site - some numbers and me is one that seems to be popular enough it may be worth it.

Because of Hitler's warring my great great grandfather's last and current proven family record does no good as the written record was destoyed. And as I learned my grandfather believed some family still remained : possibly a living relative. That was in 1980 but still intriguing at this late time am just the same and as with my dad passing in 2018 that has been passed to me, and with his passing went real interest to search for remnants, if an existing heritage even exists. I am willing to persue my families background but how do you get results when remanents of those with real knowledge for search input purpose have passed on? Therein lies my querry : benifit's of DNA when applied to fill in gaps iwhen no possibility is found to offer a first hand account. The place of birth, dates of birth and death or if married the place and date's for.

What a pity you people don't have normal speaking voices! Such a struggle understanding what the woman is white is saying. Pity - I'm wasting my time here.
