Finding a solution to my Sportsters stiff oil tank filler cap/dipstick.
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
I got fed up with my Sportsters stiff filler cap/dipstick so decided to find a solution. This is my take on the problem and I could well revert to the OEM ‘O’ Ring even though it drives me up the wall. Hope it is of some help.

I'd switch to the temp cap, esp. the analog one - it looks cool, to boot. And not too expensive!

Your more than welcome and thank you for watching and commenting 🙂, ride safe, Chris
I thought it was just mine. I have a 2009 with both the stock and analogue temp gauge dipsticks (I switch them out to check my oil level). Both of them are really difficult to unscrew. Thanks for your video !

Thanks for your kind words, much easier to check levels now. I just hope it doesn’t leak oil, so taking it for a test ride today and carrying a spare OEM ‘O’ Ring. If it does leak I’ll do an update.
I replaced the oring for a thinner one a year ago .I have a 2004 and the filler cap have no "ribs" on the side as yours have .It was impossible to open the cap with oily hands .But with the thinner oring it works fine or better .

Mine works better as well and hasn't leaked. Thanks for watching.
Thanks ! I have a 2013, it’s been too tight since day one. I replaced it with the digital temp gauge model. It stopped working after a year. Back to the original. I’ll try a smaller ring. Let us know how you made out please.

So far no problems and that's almost a year.
If you don't use the stock O Ring it is going to leak. When you are running down the highway oil is going to come out. The groove where the O Ring is sitting in is out of round. Take file and go around the groove to get rid of the out of round. I have done a lot of these. No leaks and easy to take off.
