Find the Correct Powder Charge - Powder and Primer Tested!

In this video I review the process of finding the correct powder charge for precision load development. I cover 2 different primers while looking for a low extreme spread load. After the initial test we verify that the charge we found had a extreme spread of less than 20 FPS!

    I watched your video, "Stop Chasing the Lands..." after I had watched EC's video several months before. Your video gave me information to better understand EC's video, and I had to go back and watch his again. EC's was kind of the "Cliff Notes" version where yours had more detail, like a full publication, which made a more clear picture for me. Keep up the good work

I've found my .308 charge with Varget 44grs 8 ES 4 SD and 44.2 6 ES and 3.1 SD. I'm now going to do this test at 44.1 and make my first 1k yard shot next month. I think the work MoparMadman has done here on BoltActionReloading showing all the different parts make a difference and how to make more consistent ammo at each step is invaluable... I have gone to Mandrel sizing of necks on 45-70, 445 SuperMag, 357 Max, and 22-250 so far.. I really enjoy his work. Erik kind of have us a plan and so far it really seems to be a easy workable plan. Also so far seemingly verified and functionally accurate as well. Add is all the other little things we have learned like mandrel neck sizing, annealing, full length bump sizing etc already and many of which Erik also uses and you get the idea we are distilling a very productive method... One day soon we hope we can have the components to answer the last question I really have which is does neck tension just change the formula or is there truly best setting... Gonna eat some serious components in this time of shortage so probably gonna have to wait a while on that answer...

    I really appreciate everything you do and how you explain things. I saw the “negative” comments you mentioned in your video regarding relevance of all of this research to a hunting rifle. However, people need to understand that there are many reasons to reload - save money, accuracy, tailor loads... One interest that I suspect that we and many of your watchers have in common, is that we get enjoyment strictly from the pursuit of making the best loads possible - most consistent, least run-out, lowest ED & SD, best accuracy. This is great fun in itself, and the rewards of better long range accuracy, cleaner kills, better confidence in your loads, and more shooting, come with the results. I get so much info and so many ideas from you, Eric Cortina, and F-Class John. As mentioned in comments below, all of you really compliment each other by explain and approaching things from different directions. I really like your methodical and data driven approach to the concepts that Eric presents - it helps me to understand the ideas better. Even though I don’t have access to a 1000 yd range out East, I enjoy making great ammo and hope to one day be able to test my loads at 1000+ yds. Keep up the great work!!

    Great stuff! I just finished working up a load in 6 creed, with 115 DTACS, RL16, Peterson LRP brass, and CCI BR2 primers, deciding on velocity data only, with an SD of 5, and ES of 13, averaging 2948 fps with 39.8 grains, with a CBTO at 0.030” off the lands. Luckily, it still feeds from AICS mags, as 115 gr DTACs are on the long side. Ended up with 0.5 MOA groups consistently at 100 yards on my 24 lb PRS rig. I’ve used LOTS of your technical videos as a resource in load development. Thank you!

    Thank you for all your hard work and effort. I appreciate the technical aspect, it's right up my alley. I have just started reloading again, a passion I abandoned to raise a family 35 years ago. I was disappointed to see the shortage of components, namely primers. I have come to the conclusion that primers do have a shelf life. If available, I would just have discarded my old stash, but I must use them. No misfires, but I can't find any consistent velocities. There's always one or two in the string that spoil the ES. I Would be grateful for your thoughts; I get so many different opinions. Thanks again. Robarry.

    WE watch the same folk! I agree with everything you showed. I would add that some very experienced long range shooters back in the 70's understood Boyle's Law that says that pressure is inversely related to the volume and would find the jump that produced the best groups and maintain that same jump for the life of the throat until an adjustment of two grains would no longer maintain the velocity. Eric was a baby then.

    I don’t have a chrono yet so I’m doing this kind of stuff based on groups and shooting a waterline target at 100 yards. I did this load work up with a COAL of 2.800 (based off the loading manual). I liked the way this work up was shooting at 43.7-44.1 grains of Varget. My pressure test went up to 45.5 grains without any pressure signs. Now my question is if I were to introduce a COAL that’s .020 off my lands do I need to start over essentially with my pressure testing, or do I just load up my 43.7 load to the new COAL and be good to go since I had 1.5 grains or more headroom until seeing any pressure signs.

I'm about to try this method other than Bergers method and I don't see how much rounds do we load at one powder charge for good data? I noticed you loaded one round at one powder charge, then went up .2 grains for the next shot. Erik mentions picking the best ES. Which I think 3 to 5 rounds, more the merrier, to help find good velocity data. Or is one good enough like you did? I'm probably overthinking this lol

  • @BoltActionReloading

    Hi Kenny in his video which is called "PRS load development part 3" he shows the data from the rounds loaded in part 2. He only uses 1 round per charge weight and he discusses picking the middle of the widest node. He mentioned doing more at each charge weight if you want to. (optional) If you are not as confident in your process do more. Its a trade off of time / barrel life/ and components. I think there is some confusion about a velocity node and a accuracy node as they are not the same as well. I am in the middle of another series on this on my channel as well so stick around. I hope that sometimes people learn better from examples. If you haven't seen them all I walk through most of the process steps in this playlist. kzread.info/head/PLXl7rMHW73NOH6EKeU70IrjZoiHcYFenq Feel free to ask questions, I try to respond. I love your goal to learn and to improve! How did you determine the correct powder charge? Was it due to a plateau at 42..6? Then you tested the 5-shot, 7-shot groups at that powder charge of 42.6 gr? Changing your cartridge over all length changes combustion or changes barrel harmonics?

  • @BoltActionReloading

    @BoltActionReloading

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Missy, Since the velocity from 42.4 to 42.8 were basically the same I chose to load in the middle of those. (42.6) the 5 shot group was to validate that the nod was real and the 7 shot group was to see if I was still in that node (and to get the velocity so I could do my drop table for my hunting trip) The next step will be to to the barrel harmonic testing by changing the COAL.

  • @RetrieverTrainingAlone

    @@BoltActionReloading Your first step is to find a "combustion node" so why not shoot 5-shot groups at each powder charge above 42.0 gr to get the combustion node that has the lowest velocity standard deviation? I might not understand, it seems like you have variation statistics standard deviation, extreme spread (n=5,7) only for one specific powder charge (42.6) not any other charges above or below? For examples it is unknown what a 5-shot std. dev/ ES would be at 42.6, 42.8 grains?

    Again, great vid. Thank You for the time & effort you put into these vids. I must say though, for the average guy & rifle, I don't believe this method is of any practical use. There was a discussion over on Snipers Hide about the Satterlee method & how it applies realistically. The major point here is that, Satterlee developed this method using data & previous results from his rifle system. Satterlee was operating from the assumption that the rifle system was capable & proven to produce very low velocity SD"s which, is imperative for this method to produce meaningful data. This method is a prime example of how we can all be influenced by our presuppositions wherein it is difficult to view the data in its true perspective without imposing our beliefs upon the results. Kind Regards...............Rotas

    Exactly how is one rifle more capable than another in generating low SD's?

  • @rotasaustralis

    @rotasaustralis

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@kenginter6112 Well, it's more the barrel, chamber & ammunition I suppose. All I know for sure is that, without very low SD"s, the data can't be representative of what you're looking for; a flat velocity node. For example; if you choose 0.2 grn intervals &,, suppose the velocity difference average is expected to be between 15 & 20 ft/sec, you'd need an SD of less than 20 ft/sec which, is +/- 10 ft/sec in order to have any certainty that what appears to be a velocity node, isn't just shot to shot natural overlap distribution of that rifle system. Unless you have a rifle/ammunition system which is proven to produce very low ES/SD"s with that particular powder/bullet combo, the Satterlee method simply cannot be relied upon to produce reliable data. As for the rifle system generating low SD's, my rifles can & have produced SD's as low as 5.5 &, a few 9's but, they are the exception & not the rule with any of the rifles I have at the moment. Hopefully that will change in the near future but, my rifles certainly won't produce the required ES/SD's reliably enough to be searching for velocity differentials of 10 & 15, not even close. With my best reloads to date, my average SD's hover around 18 to 25. Nowhere near low enough to differentiate velocity differences of 10 to 15 or even 20 ft/sec. All I would be seeing is the natural gaussian distribution overlap & confusing that overlap with a velocity flat spot & nothing more. Regards..................Rotas

    @@BoltActionReloading It would be cool to see 20 rounds loaded at a given weight with 20 more loaded at 0.1 grain more (accuracy of many scales). Then fire them all else being equal, testing the difference in average velocity between the two. I.E. how much could a guy improve his velocity moving from .1grain scales to .02 grain scales. You may have already talked about this, I haven’t watched all your videos.

    @@BoltActionReloading Yeah that makes sense, it would be easy for the difference to be lost on the noise. I guess I am thinking of the scenario where you have found a combination that performs optimally in your gun, specifically in terms of SD and ES, using a scale that is accurate to 0.1 grains. It would be nice to put a number on how much your SD and ES should got down by moving to a better scale, on average. Most of us probably will never be able to measure it with the setups we have for velocity measurement and given the other factors involved. But if there was a way to demonstrate it, with statistical significance, I'd probably buy the better scale, depending on the purported potential improvement.

    Picking a "node" based on velocity does not insure the target will agree. Essentially all winning bench rest, Fclass, etc precision target shooters shoot a charge ladder on the target to identify the node resulting from barrel harmonic vibration, which does not affect velocity; and they will emphatically tell you the best accuracy generally does not relate to chrono statistics. In fact on the target you will see increasing charge weight and velocity will generate a sine wave point of impact response where faster bullets actually hits lower. This is also how rifle tuners work. Prove this to yourself; next time you run a single shot charge ladder, shoot it on the target as well and compare the results.

    HI Charles. Is there any chance you actually watched the whole video? This is 1 step of the method that Erik Cortina has put forth. This is not a find the velocity node and your done. This is a process. Erik might happen to be one of those "winning" F Class shooters that don't use this method. Except this is his method. The whole point of the series is proving it too myself. I agree if you just pick a charge you might not have the best groups. The next step is to adjust COAL to dial in your accuracy, then tuner. BAR

    @@BoltActionReloading I did fast forwarded through a few areas. I have read many postings by EC, and up to this point have only seen him present charge weight tuning based on shooting a target. His long range tuning at 100yd post has had over 1000 replys; it is essentially the OCW method developed by Dan Newberry years before. On this basis I cannot say to what extent he relys on tuning with a chrono; on the otherhand many use it to improve loading consistency (eg brass prep) after a tuning has been developed. But again I know the vast majority do not rely on a chrono to tune for charge weight. As noted it is free to look at both during load development for better understanding.
