    I've been struggling with an in-ground hot tub leak for MONTHS. I tried using drops of dye around the surface, and even patching over jets and lights with duct tape and plastic bags trying to find the leak(s). Just stumbled upon this video and it did the trick. In my case, there was some old puddy located at the back of a pool light that was sucking up the dye around its edge. Just needed to remove and repatch. Thanks for the help!

    Awesome I'm glad you found this video helpful! Sometimes the conduit pipe that attaches to the backe of the light niche will leak because a glue joint wasn't primed before gluing or even a broken pipe. When I worked in the pool business we would always shoot a fair amount of silicone in the conduit from the inside of the pool after pulling the light wire. That seemed to work out well. Also some ppl will wrap butly tape around the wire then stuff it in the pipe. Thanks for watching!

Pool company told us to seal the front of the skimmer with polystyrene and see if the water level drops. Can’t think how you’d be able to properly seal the skimmer entrance from the poolside. Pool putty works best (longevity wise) submerged in water. That being stated it's possible to get a year or more before it becomes brittle and would need to be scraped and reapplied. I think for something above the water line J B Weld might be a better option. There are many types of JB Weld one being specifically made for applications on plastic. I hope this helps. So with the pool filter running 3 days it leaks 2 fingers when the pool filter is off leaks more like double. How can I tell if the return is really the problem before I incur a big expense. I'm chilling so heres a quick response, hopefully you don't fall asleep,it's alot. So from what you posted it seems like the leak is more severe when the system is shut down, but less severe while running. One action you can take on your own is performing s bucket test. Very simple. Get a regular 5 gal bucket, fill it half way up with pool water (or a little higher than pool water height so it doesn't float), place a brick or something of that weight in the bucket, then with a marker mark the inside of the bucket at the water line (hight of water in the bucket) and the water line on the outside of the bucket. You can apply a piece of gray duct tape mid water line and mark it, makes it easier to make a mark on the tape then bucket. Run the system for a couple of days without adding water. Afterwards compare the water lines. Did the water line drop the same in the pool and bucket? Then (if you need to add water to pool do so) repeat the steps for the bucket test with system off . Make sure if there is a timer it is off, and remove the pump lid as well. (With the lid off it breaks the system from pulling water, kinda like draining a water bed) After a couple of days compare the water line again. Did the pool water drop to the same level as bucket water? If what you posted is still the issue (water dropped more when system is off) I can only assume there may be a plumbing leak however it would more than likely be a suction leak (skimmer or main drain) Reason being, a pool filterasion system has essentially to ways of moving water, suction and discharge. Suction equals negative pressure, and discharge equals positive pressure. So if a return line was leaking you would observe a bigger leak then if a suction line was leaking. Again suction is pulling water, discharge is pushing water. So with the system on if there was a suction leak it would prevent water from easily being able to leak. Hope that makes sense. Now depending on how involved you want to get you can buy a rubber pipe plugs (1-1/2) and plug the skimmer and main drain with the system off and see if the water drops less then evaporation from the sun. If you come to the conclusion that it holds water with these two suction lines plugged then it is a suction leak. Going further you can remove one of the plugs, say the skimmer and see how much the water drops (refill if needed), plug the skimmer and remove the plug from the main drain and see how much the water drops. If you see a significant drop when only one is plugged or less of a drop when both are plugged it is a sign of a suction leak. If when both suction lines are plugged, and the water drops below the skimmer there may be a return line,or pool light niche leak. I've let the water line drop in pools until it stopped, usually at the skimmer mouth, return lines, light niche, or main drain. Letting the water drop with the system off and the pump lid off is a long wait but sure fired way to determine were the leak is coming from, and if you are willing to wait you could avoid all the steps mention above and see were the water stops. Where it stops is where the leak is. Now this may not be the best advice but I've plugged the majority of returns in pools that were leaking with the system running (in your case 2) and within an hour or less water finds its way to the surface and shows where a discharge leak was coming from. Then I basically dig and fix the pipe. Again depending on your pools surround this could be a reasonable test. If you have concrete surrounding your pool doing this may push the clean fill from under the surround leaving a void under the concrete. If you have pavers not that big of a deal because you can always backfill and reset pavers. I know how frustrating this situation can be but you can follow these steps and find the leak. Also this type of work is mostly investigation work. One last thing, I believe the type of pipe the leak detector was referring to is called flex pipe, it's mostly used for residential spa plumbing. I hope this helps.

    Nice job. Can I use this to stop a leak on the top of my wall in my spa? The spa is the same level as the pool and when the spa fills and overflows into the pool, it’s leaking at the top of the wall under to concrete deck. I had a leak detection done today and it was confirmed.

  • @DoItWithDave

    @DoItWithDave

    4 жыл бұрын

    If you know the location of the leak give the pool putty a go. One thing, pool putty works best (longer) when submerged in water. If you have a leak where the coping meets the concrete surround you may look into an epoxy grout to fill the void from inside the spa. From what I can gather based on your post you have a spa with a sheer descent... water is poured into the pool with spa water? You stated the spa and pool are the same height, it's kinda throwing me off, (spa is usually higher then pool to have the water feature). So if the leak happens only when the spa is overflowing, and holds water when it's not then the leak will be happening at the waterline when the feature is turned on. It sounds like a tile leak or possibly around were the water leaves the spa. In any case if you have the leak location give the pool putty a go.

  • @DoItWithDave

    @DoItWithDave

    Жыл бұрын

    First let me ask do you have an above ground pool or in-ground? The reason I ask is because of the skillset / difficulty of replacing an in-ground skimmer versus an above ground. If it's an aboveground it should be pretty easy to replace if you think that's the route you need to go however for an inground that ends up being an entirely different project altogether. If you see visual cracks in the skimmer you can use a 2-part resin or epoxy for plastics. J-B weld makes it pretty great product to seal those cracks rather than replace, and see if that works. Keep in mind pool putty is meant to be submerged underwater for its life expectancy. I hope this helps.

    Couple of things come to mind. You could have a leak in the auto fill pipe or at the fitting that connects to the skimmer inlet. You may want to bring the water level up above the inlet and dye test it. If that's the case you may consider deleting the pipe by sealing it from inside the skimmer. If you don't find a leak there you may have a leak in the plumbing itself. In that case you'd have to perform a more detailed leak test. I can explain more about how you can go about it. If you'd like more information let me know what type of pool surround you have first concert, pavers, grass ect.

    @@DoItWithDave Let me clarify my situation. If you are in the pool looking at skimmer, you see the skimmer opening and approximately 6” below it the pipe that comes from the automatic fill valve. The tile at the mouth of the skimmer has lifted somewhat leaving a crack between skimmer and Pebble Tec. I understand this must be sealed with pool putty. There is rust going down from left side of skimmer down to where fill pipe comes out. My question is if this is the only leak why with pump off would water leak down 2 3/4” below the bottom edge of skimmer where it meets Pebble Tec ( where crack is between skimmer and pebble Tec). It does not leak down to the pipe coming from auto fill valve. The line around the pool where leaking stops has no fittings, just Pebble Tec. Guess I need to call pool professional.

    If you rather have a leak detection company try to find the leak I'd say do. If you want to put some more time in yourself I have a couple of suggestions. Bring the water to operating level. If you have a pool light remove the light bulb housing and dye test the connection on the light niche. It's where the conduit attaches to the niche. It should be held in with one screw. If you find a leak there you can use plumbers putty and stuff the pipe a couple of inches. Or you could drop the water level and use a high strength silicone to seal the opening. If that's not the case try to dye test the skimmer suction line and anything else that has an inlet. If there's no leak there than you may try a pressure test which is a bit of work however you could perform a leak test on the return lines. You can find pipe plugs at your local hardware store or online. The wall returns should be 1-1/2". It you plug all the returns with the water level at operation height you can go one by one slowly removing one plug at a time and dye test the wall return. If you get no dye pulling on one return then put it back in place and move to the next. If you find that any one of the returns takes in the dye you've got a plumbing leak. If that's the case the best way to find out the the area it's leaking from is to watch very closely at how much dye a return takes in. If one return takes in an larger amount of dye that another than the plumbing leak is closeted to that return. Only reason I asked about the surrounding is with a plumbing leak it's easier to remove pavers fix the leak and reset them. A concrete surround with a plumbing leak means chipping out a section of the surround to get access to the broken pipe then pour new concrete in the opening. If you've read this far congratulations I know it's a lot. If you want some more information about doing a pressure test let me know. It does involve quite a few things. I really hope this helps.

    Rit dye is ideal due to its heavy body. This helps you see the dye as it doesn't dissipate very quickly in water. You should be able to get it at Target or Walmart for about $3.00. A pretty good deal for such an expensive procedure if done by a leak detection company. You could try food coloring however it has a lighter body than Rit. I hope this helps.

    Pool putty works best fully submerged in water. If it stays dry for a long period of time it will loose it's bond. If the break to be patched will be submerged it should be fine. If the break will be above the water line than you may opt for a JB Weld made for plastic. I hope this helps.

    My pool has had multiple leaks - the water will drop a foot right after a company claims to have fixed the leak by way of dye testing. I'm on the 4th attempt - one company fixed behind the light, then came out again and fixed the skimmer, and then a second company came out to fix ONE of the sump pumps (I asked if the other sump was leaking when they fixed the one, and the guy said, "NO", but water dropped a foot within 2 days of him leaving. That's not evaporation.) As it was late winter and raining, I left it. QUESTION IS: Can this fix be done when the pool is drained? I've had it drained to clean out the soil. We had an abnormal amount of rain and with it pool ended up with dirt from garden beds surrounding (unusual winter).

    It would take about four days for to drop by the opening at the skimmer shown in the video. The best way to find a leak around a skimmer or main drain is to do the dye test. You may be able to see a where the water is leaking out by looking around the opening of the skimmer. if you can't find anything for the dye test you may have an issue with the plumbing leaking. Chasing pool leaks can be a pain in the neck.

    @@DoItWithDave Thanks for your reply- I appreciate it. I'm JUST flustered right now as I brushed/shocked my pool the other day to Get rid of some green algae, and then lost about Four inches of water overnight. Since the ONLY time I've ever lost water was due to a defective hydrostatic valve , I was afraid that this was the problem once again. But since I had the hydrostat replaced only a year ago, it didn't seem likely. Anyway, my Pool store suggested turning the pump ON/Off rapidly in order to clear the hydrostat,which I did. Now, it doesn't seem to be leaking?? Is it possible that this Is what happened?? PS I DON'T THINK it's pulling up groundwater, as there's no pebbles in my pool pump basket; which occurred before the hydrostat was replaced.

    @@charlies.5777 hey there I'm hoping your pool is holding water now. The valves in the main drain from my understanding are in place so if the pool is drained the water table can equalize to prevent the pool shell being pushed upward out of the ground. I know when these are used in skimmers in the case that the pool water drops below it the valve will open to allow water in the skimmer so the pump won't run dry. In any case the valves are extremely easy to replace, they literally thread in, it's just a matter of dye testing around them with all the equipment off. If they are leaking at the valves then pool puttying around were the leak is could be a temporary fix however the main solution would be to replace the valves. FYI in some cases the leak can be found were the valves thread in, and removing, applying Teflon tape to the threads, and reinsert you may find that was the issue. In a extreme cases ppl have opted to replace the valve with a thread plug. Long post I know. Happy 4th of July!

    @@DoItWithDave Thanks for your reply. I THINK that my H2o leak has stabilized, BUT I REALLY don't know why!! I can only surmise that something got under the hydrostatic valve and kept it from closing properly and was cleared when I rapidly turned the pump Off/ON several times.. Or perhaps some leaf debris "clogged" the main drain cover and caused the hydrostatic valve to then open up (one person's theory) as ALL of the suction was being diverted to the main drain at the time. Does this sound possible?! Unless the hydrostatic valve Is still leaking but is allowing in the exact amount of water it's losing - which doesn't sound logical.

    With pump off and no water being added to replace lost water, the water level in our pool drops just to the level of the bottom side of the rectangular skimmer openings. The level in the skimmers staya stable at that point; skimmers do not empty. From this, may I conclude that we do NOT have a leak at the main drain on the floor of the pool or in the skimmer to pump plumbing, and that the leak is probably at or around the entry to the skimmer from the pool side? If I feel around the buoyant flapper door, on both skimmers, I think I can perceive crevices in the plaster between the end of the tile and the beginning of the skimmer proper. Thanks to anyone who can respond. Incidentally, none of the pool supply businesses in my area have pool leak detection kits available. Not one. I am using food coloring.

  • @DoItWithDave

    @DoItWithDave

    From what I've read in your comment the water drops to the bottom of the skimmer face and stops there. If that's the case I'd think you've got a leak where the face of the skimmer meets the tile. It seems like a pretty good indication. If I'm way off please lmk. If this is accurate then a dye test should be performed. Food coloring has a very light consistency and will be difficult to check for leaks. I'd suggest using Rite dye. You should be able to find it at your local grocery store. With the water level at the normal operating height and pump off try a dye test around the skimmer. I'd think you'd find water being lost there. If that's the case get some pool putty and use it to seal the area where the water is leaving the pool. If that doesn't work please reply and I'll do my best to help figure it out. I hope this helps.
