FINANCIAL RESET 💰 Learning to budget and starting over in my 40s
FINANCIAL RESET 💰 Learning to budget and starting over in my 40s
I'll admit, I've never been someone who has used a budget, tracked my expenses or been in proper control of my money. Although I've never felt I've had to go without, I've spent my adulthood living week to week, pay to pay and never having any savings or any real financial security. After divorce I've had to shift my money mindset because now that I only rely on myself for making an income I need to take control of my life, start budgeting, start tracking ALL my expenses so I can build myself a rich life and financial independence.

Now that you have all your expenses accounted for, it will be good to review it each month and adjust for under or over spending areas. Food expenses is an area you can really save, just by some weekly meal planning.
Starting over is not easy. I did it at 47 and I am NOT sorry I did this! Life is amazing! Business amazing !

You are on fire at the moment! I love watching you!
I have budgeted since the day we got married (33 years ago) and I’m a numbers person. Here are some of my thoughts: Groceries+Takeaway+Coffees are the killers of your budget. It’s all just “Food and Drink”, no matter how you break it up. Just a small reduction in those things every month (even just 10% reduction which you wouldn’t even notice) can add up to big bucks to fund your next trip. Also I didn’t notice if you had budgeted Pet or Vet Expenses for your lovely cat. One big vet bill can blow your budget right out of the water. Unforeseen medical expenses for ourselves or our furry family members can hit us by surprise. Definitely worth having them in your budget, even if you don’t use them every month. Just a few thoughts. See you in the group. 🇦🇺 🦘 Laura
Starting again is super scary Mel. I’ve followed your journey for many years now. I feel like we are friends. I’m also a full time re seller (as well as a few other jobs). I don’t think you are aware of how many of us are with you and care about you. I take advice from you, sometimes I feel like I could be helpful. I am am currently dealing with very serious illness (cancer, lots of it) and also a yucky divorce from a man who was abusing on every level. Am I a victim? No. I’m a survivor. But I’m also a mother and a woman and that means I have to make it work. With your help, I have and I am. Thank you. ❤

It’s funny how divorce is so traumatizing yet so healing in a lot of ways. You’re going to look back on this time as a period of intense personal growth. Thank you for the update. The spreadsheet looks awesome.
Awesome job Mel! I am three years post divorce and budgeting is so important for peace of mind. I was amazed at how much stress not knowing my finances was causing. I started following The Budget Mom and budgeting changed my life. You got this! I am rooting for you!

A business 'expense' that is hard to budget for is that unexpected too good to turn down inventory purchase. Being a reseller myself, you always have to have some reserve inventory money over and above your normal spend for that deal that is too good to turn down and doesn't come up very often. I've always got that in my mind and have had to dip into it from time to time, but it's one to consider. It's a reserve inventory account

Yes, and also if the opportunity comes up for a larger haul it's nice to have some surplus. Thank you for watching and sharing.
The spreadsheet is a great idea! The only tips I have (I have been debt free for 10 years but am by no means an expert) is cut up those credit cards, do not use Zippay (this adversely affects getting a home loan) and use CASH! I give myself a set amount each week for treats (for me thats mainly coffee, odd takeaway & the cinema). Yes if you make coffee yourself you can save a lot of $s, but you also need to enjoy life and treat yourself. 😊
@backfromburnout

Thank you! I have zero credit cards and won't be getting them and have never used zipay or afterpay so I promise I won't start now :) I do like my store coffee, especially in the morning. I really don't want to give that up if I don't have to.

I would certainly endorse the last sentence: if you don't budget some treats then you almost certainly won't maintain the budget long term. Few of us are cut out for monastic austerity!
This is so timely and great info. I lost my husband almost a year ago so I'm the only income. I'm coming out of my funk and thinking about money Luckily I have a long time job and good pay. Plus long time 401k, his life insurance money and his remaining retirement. I always did the bills just didn't try to save much except in 401k. I'm using an app to help me budget starting this month. Any money you are able to save is excellent and no need to be embarrassed. You got this like you have everything else. Such an inspiration. Thank you!

Thank you, and I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm glad you have some good security money though.
Good for you girl!! My husband & I became debt free three years ago. No mortgage, car loans or credit cards. We don't use credit cards for business either, it's pay cash as we go. I know many resellers use credit cards for purchase then pay at end of month to gain points for trips but we don't agree that it is wise. Cash is always best then save money for your trips or travel as your budget permits. Now we are working on our retirement as well.
Thank you for being so raw Mel. You’ve inspired me so much. It’s never too late. 🙏🏻
Budgets are like our eBay stock, take the emotion out of it & make decisions based on your goals. You won't fail hun, fantastic start! 💪🏻
I've been divorced twice and in each marriage the husband preferred to do the money. I didn't want it that way so I was actually HAPPY to have control over my finances finally. Sure it's scary, but so is not knowing if you can cover your bills. Keep going, it gets easier and eventually you won't even think much about it.

I have had to restart my life several times in my 64 years and I find that I get better at it each time. Don't put so much focus on money. It is a utility, nothing else. If you need to use it too much in the beginning, until you get a grip, that's fine. Don't freak out.

Mel, rarely/never comment but I just want to say AWESOME WORK! I do not envy your position (I've been a SAHM for over 15 yrs now here in Canada, but I'm American, and I have considered if I walked in different shoes on some occasions through the years), but I'm definitely cheering you on! Fantastic work w/ your superannuation. I know you have mentioned many times over (in this and previous vids) about feeling far "behind", etc, but I love even with that overwhelming feeling, your vids look like you are recognizing what has or hasn't happened in your rearview mirror, but you are not only planning (which I think is crucial), but also taking ACTION and forward thinking/strategizing for your own financial future, and that is absolutely fantastic. I am trying to sell vintage books & postcards but it is VERY slow and it is still a small shop. I really liked your ideas and will try them to see if it will help us. When I started my debt free journey, I also listed everything out and tracked my spending everyday. It is so helpful to see what you are buying and where your money is going, both of which are within your control. Just watch your expenses, because they are within your control much more than your income. And it is hard to say "no" to yourself when you are at the end of your money, especially when you deserve a coffee after the really week you had, but this muscle is the one that makes everything else possible. I set up rules and parameters for when I had to stop spending on something so I had an automatic process to fall back on instead of depending on willpower, which will always let you down. Good luck! You got this!! Just start tracking and reevaluate as needed as you actually see where your spending issues are.
Love this! My job interview is today. I plan to pay off $16k of personal debt by the end of the year while building my ebay business on the side so I can finally rise from homelessness & instability. PERFECT timing! Oh, and my incarcerated husband reminded me of our upcoming birthdays. Because of my medical emergency last year, I lost a b'day and will be turning 45 not 44 like I had thought. Right there with you Mel! However, I'm still putting pen to paper and haven't graduated to spreadsheets just yet ;)

I recommend the personal finance book, The Barefoot Investor 2022 edition by Scott Pape. Best personal finance book ever for Australians. I budget by paying myself first. I'm 60 and I have an investment in Vanguard International Shares Index Managed Fund which I manage through a Vanguard Australia Personal Account. Apart from that I have savings and also emergency funds. I'm debt free, no dependents, no partner. I have no super as I don't work and am on a disability support pension. I'm also in a nice public housing small brick house in a nice area. I feel so blessed though of course my health is awful. I like to splurge on nice coffees and I get taken out in my wheelchair to thrift. I have thousands of $ worth stuff and would to sell on Ebay.
Argh, finally, I’ve missed your face! I watch you whilst I work and find you actually motivate me believe it or not!

That's a really nice jumper. You look like barbie. All the best with your budgeting. The thing that helped me realise I was spending too much back in the day was my brother saying "do you really need that?" Those 5 words turned my financial life around.
Budgets are so important. Knowing money in and money out alleviates so much stress. All kids should be taught how to work out a yearly budget.
You are amazing! We went debt free many years ago and a budget was essential. Starting to put money in a retirement plan is fantastic. Obviously you can continue to increase it, but getting started is the hardest part. Just a note on the emergency account. You can take out all non-essentials in a month ie coffee and takeaway. Your emergency fund is 3 months of necessities in my opinion. That way more can go to retirement or travel 😊
Lets go Mel 💕💕💕
Great video Mel! I do my budget in Google Sheets but, I’m a pen and paper girl and love to write my budget. It may be redundant but, it’s what works for me 💙💙

Loved this video Mel, I keep a basic budget spreadsheet and have multiple accounts that I put money in every week for all regular expenses (even down to things that might be $20 for the year I transfer to an account 40c per week so I don't have to think about it). I do love the spreadsheet you are using though as much more detailed so I will look into it. I am in Sydney and have just switched to AGL for electricity and I can go in the app as often as I like and put in the current meter read and it estimates what my bill will be for that month. I don't know who you are with but I believe there are others that also have this feature. I only buy markdown meat (whenever I am near a coles or woolies I run in to see if there are any markdowns) which saves lots on the grocery budget also and with 4 adults in the house this is a lifesaver. I also look use cashrewards and shopback for any purchases I am already going to do to get some percentage back. Thank you so much for your motivation in your videos

Budget Tips: seperate accounts for just about everything (I have about 9), I only have one ATM card . If I purchase a gift or clothing, I transfer the amount from that account into my “everyday” account and pay with my card. Food: on Sundays, I meal plan, shop and precook / freeze meals into single portions for either fast dinners or for quick lunches. This stops me having takeaway or fast food. It also is helpful if I want soup for dinner and kids want pasta. I usually will cook around 4 different meals (it also builds up over a couple of weeks so you have plenty of variety) Coffee: use to LOVE my takeaway coffee but I purchased a Nespresso machine (Vertuo) from Costco for about $139 I think it was and have only purchased one a handful of times in the past 3 years. Grocery budget: I shop online (yes I paid the yearly fee for free delivery) I have found it keeps me really accountable, as I can see the final price before I confirm and if I have gone over my allocated amount, I can change it. It also stops impulse buying!

Yup this is exactly how we do it too. Love doing the grocery shopping online as well. Sort everything by lowest unit price and save heaps 😍
Also, you can get some of the personal insurances through a super fund

Yes I need to explore more about that!
Remember , if youre not aware, that you are legally entitled to a portion of his super as you were at home raising both your kids ( you can only apply up to a year after divorce, i think ). This could be important income later in life... Thanks for sharing your finances - it was interesting 💜

We went 50/50’on the supers but neither of us had a lot as both were self employed and sadly didn’t prioritise it over the years as four kids was so expensive and super always seemed to come last.
I'm just going through all this myself Mel after 4 years of separation. Thinking about all the things that have to be paid for is mind boggling. I had to laugh at Spotify "Educational Playlists"! Have you considered Health Insurance, Life Insurance, Income Protection Insurance (what happens if you get sick and can't work for 1/2/3 months?), also Car Servicing and Registration (on top of Green Slip & Insurance costs). Everytime I look in another box of documents, I find another bill that I hadn't considered as part of my annual budget. Lots of luck!

Yes it’s a lot! I have considered all those insurances. They’re coming as soon as I can. I meant educational podcasts and audio books lol I listen to them daily and more than music probably :)
