    Excellent Video! When we get consumer inquiries on this topic we suggest people substitute "speed" with "performance" to understand the difference.

    I drive a high performance vehicle and can cruise at 120 130 on open roads. One key factor he doesnt point out in addition to need hard turns and sudden shifts on load is braking performance is increased substantially with a high speed rated tire (usually). I have driven several different tire brands and ratings and the higher speed rated tires usually can handle violent braking situations tremendously better. Makes the car more nimble in every category

    I easily go 140mph on the Autobahn, so the speed ratings mean a little more for those of us driving in Europe.

    Great video! We recently had to explain to customer who was concerned because they had zr rated tires originally who then got w rated ones and that they should be safe as long as it wasn't tracked(it was driven around town and highway only). The more important thing(within reason) was the load rating of the tire as even mto safety standards mention load rating and not speed rating(would make a interesting video on that topic too).

    Thanks for the explanation on the speed rating on the tires. Very Informative. So, I have a question: If Higher Speed Rating = Softer Compound = Better Grip = Shorter Stops = Precise Turns = Better Acceleration = ??? fuel efficiency? I think that is a very, VERY IMPORTANT question for the tire buyers theses days considering the historic high fuel prices.

    Softer compound will make the tyres use more fuel. Peace

    Hey great explanation thanks! Does softer compound mean V rated tyres might be more quiet than H rated ones in everyday driving conditions? Because I had the opposite impression and I have been thinking to get H one to reduce the noise of the car.

    you are overlooking just three little considerations higher speed rating means less tread depth, which equals less tire life. They give it less meat in the tread area to prevent centrifugal force, making the tire distorted as it attempts to grow The second point is, high speed, rated tires, have a much different carcass, to resist, centrifugal force. This means you get a much different ride. The third thing to consider is, although you were going to be getting less tire, life, and a harsher ride, you’re also going to pay a higher premium for high speed rated tires, and there’s one other thing here where I live in Pennsylvania, USA. It is actually illegal for a garage or dealer or tire store to plug a tire with a speed rating higher than V or Z. They are actually liable if they plug a tire and you have a tire failure with that tire. you mentioned that nowhere in North America can you drive at those speeds that these tires are rated for. You have overlooked people drag racing at drag strips and during track days at road racing tracks. when they make a powerful car that is capable of very high speeds, they have a responsibility to the customer to see that not only is the car capable of the speeds, but the tires are also capable. For those people that may want to go to Bonneville salt, Flats… they won’t even let you on the salt flats or on a road race track unless you have tires rated for the speeds you may reach.. but your tone suggests it is a waste of money, buying high speed rated tires for your commuter car. And I 100% agree. For decades, on motorcycles, I always buy the H rated tire of a particular tire. I want to buy if I can get that exact same tire with the same load rating or higher required or specified in the owners manual. Many times, the better brands of tires will offer H, V, and Z rated motorcycle tires in the same model tire… One other little consideration if you’re putting these tires on an old Jag or an old English sports car with wire wheels, having an innertube in a tire reduces that tires carrying capacity by 10%. Same for motorcycles…

    How about ambient temperature or outside temperature and road temperature? How much does this matter? How long can you go over the speed rating of the tire before it causes something bad? Can you drive it for an hour over the speed rating of the tire half an hour? 5 minutes? Load rating matters but how much if you’re hundred pounds over how much difference does it make? If you’re 100 pounds under how much difference does it make if you’re 500 pounds over or under how much does that make?

    Having said that then it means a higher speed rating will wear out faster ? Given they are driven on the same conditions

    Not much at normal speeds. Softer compounds tend to pick up sand and small rocks a lot at low speeds. It's really a lot more about the tread pattern over the speed rating. Unless you're driving on the aggressive side. My simmy slick ZR tires feel like they're useless when cold. Like driving on ice. You run them at 20 PSI so they hit the target 29 PSI at speed and until that happens it's gross. Whike a set of nice Y rated tires work well enough, even doing things like autocross.

    At 1:50... "a set period of time." What is the set period of time? I read many years ago that for tire ratings, a "set period of time" is 2 hours. 149 mph for 2 hours? Hmmm.

    what happens if you go over your speed rating?

  • @jacktalkstires

    @jacktalkstires

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Frank. Great question! Based on my conversations with engineers in the tire industry, since the tires were not made to got beyond their speed rating, they will lose their integrity and may come apart. That said, it won't happen if you go a couple of miles over for a short period of time, but it you stay well above the speed rating for extended periods of time then you will be stressing the tires with forces that go beyond what they were engineered to handle.

    I disagree with the video. Speed ratings are important and they do relate to the real maximum speed you may drive. As basic requirement for vehicle homologgation, obiously the tires ratings have to match the top speed of the vehicle (amongst other specs e.g. weight rating). Why they sell cars that go 130mph? I don't know. Here in Germany this speed rating question is of practical importance, because 130mph is permitted on the Autobahn. By local law it is ok to use lower speed ratings, but in that case a warning note must be attached to the dashboard in order to inform the driver about the limited top speed. I never heard of speed ratings making a big difference in dynamic situations - the brand, quality and wear of the tire is much more important than speed rating. So summing up, tire speed rating is very important for vehicle safety. If you use lower speed rating tires, it must be ensured to never pass the top speed, which is kind of hard (think of other people driving the car eventually). So best stick to the ratings the manufacturer has recommended
