FINALLY! KeyShot 9.1 UV Unwrap Debut - First Look

My first attempt at using KeyShot 9.1's UV Unwrap tool, which is meant to allow CAD users to have more control over their texture maps on NURBS-based models. Can't edit UVs in Solidworks, Fusion 360 or Creo? KeyShot can help you out! Join me as I explore the new tool and see how it works.

Cool video, Will! Regarding Direction Guides, then there are indeed a few caveats at the moment. One of them (that you ran into a number of times) is that Seams and Direction Guides cannot be coincident. So Direction Guides won't produce good results when they are on the border between two Charts. Another one is that Direction Guides that cross Seams won't work well. In your L-shaped sample model, your best bet right now is to split the front, back and rim surfaces into three separate parts. That way, you can use Unwrap UV on each individual surface and draw a Direction Guide that runs along the outer edges, resulting in an unwrapping without (or with minimal) distortions. Make sure to keep the exact same 'Base UV Size' when unwrapping multiple parts that are supposed to have the same linked material, in order to ensure uniform texture scaling. There's much more to discuss... Let's perhaps do that at KeyShot World next month. :)

Thanks Dries! Great to have clarification on some of these. And while this video wasn’t intended to be a tutorial, I did stumble across these points you make here after I continued to explore the new tool. I’m going to make a proper tutorial on this when I’m able to and would love any input or recommendations. Thanks so much for your comment. Look forward to seeing you at KeyShot World!

I like the way you explored different options, this is better than a tutorial where you start with the right approach! When the user/student goes to try what they learned, they stumble upon problems that they can't fix, while watching THIS kind of video teaches how to approach unwrapping differently until getting it right. Loved the video and just subscribed to your awesome channel! Please do one video about Displacement same way you did here, let's go through some options! ;)

KS adding a UV unwrap is VERY welcome! I've been going back and forth between apps, hell I even use a very sloppy method of opening my model in Sketchup and using a UV unwrap plugin that's very buggy - to then reimport back into KS, this is SUCH a time saver!!!!!! So often we'd end up doing wild and crazy distortions in photoshop of a label or displacement map, no more!

I don't mind this format for videos on new features added to KeyShot. It helps me understand better how it works by seeing how it doesn't work... if that makes sense. In other words, by you fumbling through it and learning as you go, it means I don't have to (as much as I would've otherwise).

Tip- If you’re modeling your cables with a extrude tool use a sweep tool for clean UVs in KeyShot.

Mostly. Issue is you will get patches if your cable profile is not a perfect circle. Also, you’ll get stretching and pinching even with a perfect circular profile, but in a pinch, you’re right. It’ll be pretty close.

Looks like your planned tutorial on unwrapping in Blender is still actual. Those tool in KS is very promising, but for now it's functionality is very unpredictable. Fusion models done with freeform tesselate almost well in KS (except you add bevels or other features to them in solid environment), i've used it for rendering cables.

Hey Will, when you're doing the hockey stick shape and attempting to get the direction to flow around the edge, I believe it is working as you want, but the overlay with the seam is causing visibility issues. @44:44, you accidentally click on the front face and a green line does come off the red as you want. Have you tried that one again and just going through as you want, ignoring that it appears to go backward? The green dotted line suggested route might be more confusing.

Nice Will! One question! Does it break the link with the CAD model? Can you update the CAD model and preserve the UVs on the model? Of course it would probably be lost on the updated parts.. but wanting to know if the other models maintain the link! If so it would be extremely powerful when polished

  • @WillGibbons

Great question. Can’t say I know for sure, but I would imagine it’s the other way around. Ex, a cad model update pushed to KeyShot via plugin would break the UV assignment you create in KS. Hope that makes sense. Also, I haven’t tested this yet.

Is there a way to export flattened surface textures from Keyshot? In case not, do you know which other software could do the trick? @@WillGibbons I realised that I was working backwards. I guess the correct workflow is preparing asset and UV unwrapping in another program and then bring it into keyshot. I wanted to paint some dark grooves for example in crevaces of rocks in a Keyshot file I received from a colleague. As you mentioned it's impossible to export any maps from keyshot so I'm guessing the proper way is to bring it in all ready in the first place

Not sure I understand the question. You can hit 'c' on the keyboard to make it all white... then, in your environment settings, change the color from white to black by clicking the color swatch and changing it to black. You could go so far as to save this .bip file and in the preferences change the 'startup file' to this newly saved .bip file and it will launch as the starting point every time you open KeyShot. If that's not what you are asking, then I'm not sure.

When I unwrap an object, I can get it to flow pretty much how I want it, but it's never to 1:1 scale, and I have no idea how to adjust it after the fact. Because of that, any materials I use in KeyShot (that are 1:1 scale) have to be scaled to some ridiculous number.
