Finally High Power 350kW+ ChargePoint Units! Charging On The Express Plus For The First Time
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Kyle heads to Wheat Ridge, CO to charge on a ChargePoint Express Plus for the first time. These can be configured up to a 400kW output shared across two posts or 350kW per output port. In this case, the unit is a 200kW arrangement but is the same functionally as a higher power version - he plugs in a 2022 Tesla Model S Plaid using the OE accessory CCS to Tesla adapter.

@@anydaynow01 The new generation of EVs are awesome, but these third-party charging networks’ charging stations are so faulty that it’s disheartening. I was hoping to watch this video from Kyle without having to see the charger fail, but of course, it ended up failing, haha! Just had a great rental experience with Model 3 from Hertz. I was supercharging without having to worry about reliability. Hoping to rent a Kia EV6 on Turo to try it out (or when Hertz gets them), but definitely worried about the charging experience.

Come on hertz step it up and tesla you should have required these option on the sale otherwise prospective buyers don't get the full experience. And a ccs fast charge adapter would be nice too!

Lmao when you said "cojones" 🤣
Yes!! Chargepoint visit and interview with their management team would be so interesting and educational. Both for the general public but also for any companies or municipalalites that are considering them as an option.
So far, I’ve loved ChargePoint chargers! I’ve only used level 2 charge points, but they usually work quick and easy. Tap phone, grab the cable, plug in my car and go!
Love to see the ChargePoint Lab
ChargePoint HQ visit is amazing!
Thanks for stopping by Kyle!! Come nerd out with us on all things EV charging at HQ anytime⚡
This charge station is about a mile from where I live and I've used the older (green) units and never had one fail or be out of order. Want to check out the red express station soon!
Would love to see the Chargepoint Lab! And another road trip to Cali video!
That ChargePoint location at the South Arvada Target has been under construction for a while. It’s great to see they added a new, faster charger there!
Kyle, just a fun tidbit: It appears that, at this point, a 200-mile EV can now drive coast-to-coast in the United States using only ChargePoint DCFC.
Did you notice the police car sitting in the background?
Awesome to see. I've had pretty solid experiences with chargepoint, I love how quick it is to get charging. It'd be super interesting to hear from the people behind chargepoint!
Great to see chargers being sold for third-party ownership. This will allow gas stations to buy them and operate them for profit. Once they can make money, chargers will be everywhere and competition will lower charging prices.
Love the on camera fail. Nicely representative
Chargepoint will be the next Exxon for EVs.
Phoenix Contact sparks joy. And their plugs don't feel like trying to wrestle a trout

I would love to see this too!
I would have liked you to have shown a close up of the charging screen when you referred to it in your monologue. User Interfaces are yet to be explored by KZread reviewers, such as yourself, Kyle. Just like any other consumer product, EV chargers need to address user interfaces to make them easy to understand by the average person and yet supply the charging details us tech needs are interested in seeing. Perhaps you can address this in upcoming videos and even on your factory visit to CHARGE POINT.
Like that cable handle

Looks solid, although not a fan of how large it is as well as the latch and clip on it. NACS is way smaller, simpler, more elegant and less prone to damage that could render it inoperable until repaired/replaced.
Definitely check out ChargePoint HQ, amazing hardware testing facilities with some really cool tech!
You have to go check out the ChargePoint lab!
You should start seeing some of these CPExpress chargers at Stellantis dealerships around the country this coming year. As well as 19.2kw cp6000's

very exciting stuff
YASSS to the ChargePoint lab video.
Is this the first time Kyle has worn a hoodie underneath a coat on camera? Also great that it failed…oh charging
In western Colorado we definitely have more ChargePoint DC stations than EA or EVgo. I carry one of their cards because cell service is spotty in some of these rural locations. The pricing is all over the map depending upon the operator. If you’re use to paying a premium for gas in remote locations you shouldn’t be too surprised at the cost.
Thank You Kyle. Wonderful stuff, my friend.
I used one of these in October. I didn't even realize it was a big deal. Just thought it was an updated Chargepoint station.
You should absolutely go to ChargePoint’s lab! That would be great content
Glad to see ChargePoint is getting in the game. There aren't many of these Express stations. NONE between here and the CA coast. In PlugShare I see that you were there 2 days ago. Let's hope ChargePoint expands quickly and effectively.
Yeah, a Charge point tour would be awesome
Love the cop car just chilling out in background not even running but sitting there
Would love to hear more about Chargepoint & their pricing models when you have time. We’ve been looking to spec Chargepoint units at a few sites in the municipality at which I work. The pros and cons are always helpful.
Great vid. Love the content. Thx for all you do.
Yes, I'd like to see you go to the ChargePoint lab in California.
would love to see the ChargePoint tour. Just saw a number of these in eastern North Carolina when I was traveling this weekend.
Thanks for doing this video. I gained alot of understanding from you. I actually spoke with ChargePoint this morning. We may be partnering with them to supply our charging centers in Texas.
In Europe there are many chargers with these PhoenixContact connectors, all of them are liquidcooled. Way more reliable than the H+S connectors on the ABB units. The only downside on these PhoenixContact plugs is that they are very heavy. On some cars (Audi e-tron for example) you have to hold the plug during the handshake process, otherwise it won't start to charge. And in Europe Chargepoint is now installing Alpitronic chargers at most of their locations. You can ask them on your visit if they want to bring them to the US as well ;)
Thanks for getting us an early look at this new system - as the driver of a a large, current-hungry 400V EV, I really hope to see more of these around! Beyond impressed with the bypassable, hot-swappable cabinet modules. The EV charging ecosystem needs more consumer-friendly features like that. +1 for a ChargePoint facility visit soon.
Digging that Arc'teryx Parka coat. I think i may have the same one but in Black. That thing is so cozy and warm.
Charge points awesome can’t wait to use this sometime soon
What is the size of the utilities transformer? 500kva? 750kva? I'm guessing it's a 480v 3p unit
Positivity wins! Love this.
About time. Chargepoint have been basically just ignored by most users because of how slow they are!
Thanks for the video.
Great video, would love to see you visit chargepoint!
Imagine starting a charge, then going to eat dinner with your s/o, only to see that 5 minutes in, it stopped for some unknown reason. Until every charger is as reliable as Tesla’s super network, or until Tesla opens up their network to everyone, Tesla will always have a huge advantage over everyone else.
Thx Kyle. Didn’t know ChargePoint had these out yet. Only issue, my Tesla isn’t ready for the upgrade / retrofit yet 🤷🏽
I can’t wait for your round steering wheel. You better have a video with details on the wheel. I got my model S and can’t wait to get a round wheel soon.
i like the lit up charge areas, no oil anywhere, clean.
5:30 On the spec sheets they can be as low as 174 A, but up to 200 A. With the E-GMP cars, these chargers are pretty good when paired. I was seeing about 115 kW in the EV6.
I learnt so much about EVs from this channel. Now I want one, but charging infrastructure isn't great in my city lol.
Yes, pay visit to Chargepoint Cal lab.
Can’t wait fir ChargePoint to bring these more in CA as the Charge Points around here are sooooooooo slllllooooowwwwwww!
I'm in Ft Lauderdale and electrify america is changing all its chargers to 350kw stations
Going to the lab would be cool. And while you're there could you encourage them to have a CCS/NACS plug combo now that Tesla had opened up NACS?
On the public user side, chargepoint has been a favorite of mine when I can't get to a SuperCharger. I carry the CCS-1 adapter and have used it in Durango and Ouray CO. I don't like the rotating head only because its return spring system is too strong and many people will have a hard time wrestling with it. Maybe that can be adjusted to better accommodate the general public. The company had some growing pains but their attention to fleet operators and city owned sites was a wise startup choice and apparently is helping them add the public access now. Good detail and yes, see if you can do a home facility visit in CA. Cheers and thanks agin for a well done video.
The one main drawback to ChargePoint is the LCD screens on their stations. They are too dim to be easily seen in direct sunlight and the touchscreen sensitivity isn't the best. But station activation is quick so you don't need to look at the screen too much.
Nice to see that also in the US more and more CSS networks offer chargers that can deliver the power that current cars can accept. It is impossible for one network to deliver enough charging stations for everyone’s needs. You now need some kind of roaming between the networks to get P&C work throughout all the networks, or use the P&C system that BMW wants to use where you can add up to 5 different credentials for 5 different networks, but I don’t know how it will work (manually, automatically through handshake or with geofencing).
Now imagine Alpitronic Hypercharger in the US 🚀🙈
I went by there a couple of weeks ago to pick up an order and noticed those stations but I didn't need juice. The patrol car was also there. I wonder if it's security just for the station. 25 cents a minute to park after 30 minutes is a bit harsh for a site that isn't being used that much. There was one EQS at the Plus while all the other spots were empty.
That station and a few others in the same network in Colorado have been out-of-order for so long that I got fed-up and switched back to gasoline. The press release said the State of Colorado high speed charging corridor would be 125kw but so many of the stations are only 62kw.
Historically, EA chargers were very unreliable. But their new 350kW, very tall white/green units work well. I’ve charged a Lucid in Naples, FL using plug-n-charge a several times w/o a glitch. It was the same experience as a Tesla Supercharger. Without preconditioning, it started at 269kW and at 94% SoC was still pumping 59kW.

you gotta see Kyle's new video (the one where he was unable to charge his Rivian at Loveland, CO). All EA chargers failed.
Where i live we have 1 porsche only 320 kW charger and everything else is either 50 kW or 25 kW.
Thanks, Kyle. Unfortunately, the only Express Plus we have in California is at ChargePoint's Headquarters, and it's not open to the public.
Is the converter you are using a Tesla brand and is it available from the Tesla website?
Great video Kyle! Can you find out how much one of those costs? I've tried emailing them, but got no response.
So would you buy charge point stock?
I kept wondering why you were so relaxed in a dark, remote area. Theres a cop right there
I would like to see a visit to Charge point hq. On a side note, Charge point wants to install a DCFC in Gunnison CO, but the City will have to build a new substation in order to have enough capacity to power a DCFC. Yet, in Crested Butte, we have a Charge point DCFC and have plenty of power to run the charger.
nice and nerdy is good...
8:30 It probably stopped charging due to an isolation fault. (Like it always does. 😆) Maybe this one runs the isolation test after charging has started instead of before? (Maybe that's why it starts charging quicker?)
Yes, visit ChargePoint.
Yeah go to charge point!
I'd watch a video about chargepoint lab tour.
As a L2 ChargePoint user since 2017, I have been very pleased. But, when I tried to install one with direct billing at a condominium, apartment, and HOA, pricing was 4x other vendors for the same charging. Very disappointing.
Kyle, please can you do a review of two 100+kw capable EVs simultaneously charging on the paired CPE250s. They are supposed to dynamically split the power. I’m especially interested to see what happens when you start with one at say 90kw and then start on the other. Thanks for pushing the non Tesla charging industry to reach for higher standards.
how long after a charge until the station hits full power again?
Yes! Please come visit us. EXPP is a product that my team and I have worked passionately on. Glad to have found this review at random tonight.
Can't wait for the Cybertruck's 1Megawatt charghing cable
Chargepoint also has the most hassle-free level 2 home chargers, by the way.
where is this in wheatridge? i couldn't find it
VinFast is building their vehicles an hour from my house in NC, and Toyota is building another battery plant in the same area, so I was very interested to see Kyle's battery sharing video in Norway ( I don't know if VinFast will partner with Toyota battery for VinFast battery subscriptions or not). On another note, I am also very familiar with Fort Collins, which is a safe town, so who called for a squad car during this filming is uncertain.
Show the charging screen, for us here in Europe
Please explain/correct my thinking: I think when Tesla Super Charging the charger is part of the "control" of the rate/current as well as the car. When charging at home (120/240VAC) the car controls the rate/current. So, IF this is true why would I think it is safe to charge at this high rate (DC) from a non-Tesla charger where it is anyones guess what profile the charger supplies the power to my precious Tesla Battery?
What happened to the Ioniq 5??
It would be awesome if you did shoot a video at there facility
Trust me you don't have to go there to make it fault out, we're all having that same experience. Can you imagine getting back to your car after having a little lunch or dinner only to find it still empty and stop charging after 4 minutes. I swear to God I'm so glad we switched to a Tesla. The charging infrastructure is just hands down the best in the world.
@kens97sto171
Жыл бұрын
I guess it depends on your use case.. 99.9% of the time I would be charging at home.. I would buy the car that fits my needs.. size, shape, cargo, rear seat entry and exit and room, headroom.. etc. over the DC fast charging issues that I might use ONCE per year. If you travel a lot more road trips.. then yes Tesla is hands down the best. But the Tesla's specs and interior practical uses are not necessarily the best for my use. I would probably get a Bolt EUV... for $30K.. and keep my Toyota as a road trip car... for now.
Would have filled my BMW from empty in about 10% of the time it took him to get to 35% charged. Years ago the manufacturers of EVs told EV owners that EVs would be able to be charged at home in the same amount of time it took to fill a car with gas. That dream is obviously still decades away.
Charge Point Operator: ChargePoint. 😆
Tesla X/S refresh with FSD 36.20 will stop charging if car unlocks and relocks. That may have happened as you walked around.
Oh yeah. Get nerdy at Chargepoint
The cop shows up to check Kyle's canyon speed :)
Pretty 😎 cool 👍
Tbh I've never had an issue with chargepoint, they just don't have much infrastructure but IMO the experience is better than EA.
When i walk.or sometimes drive past street lights they will turn off or on. I thought it was my phone so i left my phone at home and it still did it. I watched others and it didn't do it. It is just weird.
Wow, Kyle not wearing a hoodie!
Wonder if they can do a Tesla connector cable (NASC)
@natehoy6924
Жыл бұрын
They probably could but what would be the point? For $250 you can get a CCS1 adapter for your Tesla and just use the CCS cable already there. As Kyle pointed out, the liquid cooled cables are very expensive so putting in a Tesla-specific one for big bucks doesn't make sense when we can just buy the adapter.
