Finale {Sunset Blvd ~ Broadway, 1994} - Glenn Close

Музыка

While technically not a great singer, Glenn is without question the best actor who portrayed the iconic (and fictional) aging silent film star, Norma Desmond, on stage. This kind of acting alone deserves both a Tony and an Oscar (hint, hint ALW). She could have been the definitive Norma if only she had the phenomenal vocal chops of either Betty Buckley or Elaine Paige.

I think it means that if you are going to compare her to Lupone and Paige. But Close's overall performance and her gargantuan acting overshadowed her lack in technical singing making those ladies with big beautiful voices nothing. It's like Lupone and Paige are just mere actresses who played the role of Norma Desmond, but Norma Desmond is made and meant for Close only.

I also worked on a photo shoot with Meryl, and she is equally kind and down to Earth. Just so gracious, the both of them. It's wonderful when people who are so incredibly talented are also kind. To me, Glenn's performance here is just brilliant; she takes so many risks. Fearless. I also think Betty Buckley was fabulous in this role. I don't see a need to compare the two. Everyone is talking about her amazing acting because the other performers often just sing, without acting. Same can be said about Diana Damrau as Queen of the Night in Magic Flute. Actually, Close has a very fine voice for this particular work. She certainly has more depth and variety of tonal color than others in the role (Lapone, Dunaway). I haven't heard Buckley in the role. My career was in the artistic administration of opera. Close is a HUGE fan of opera. She probably might have wanted to pursue an operatic singing career, but just does not quite have the chops for that (there is no amplification of the voice in opera, and both the orchestras and the halls are much bigger than in musicals as a general rule. But in this role, I cannot imagine anyone finer than Close. One of the great stage performances of our time, and that says a LOT.

Glenn Close deservedly won the Tony for this, as she also did for "Death and the Maiden". She's won every acting award except the Oscar, for which she Motion Picture Academy should hang their heads in shame. They come no greater than Close and Meryl Streep.

For those of you who say Glen doesn't look like any silent movie star, I have one name for you: Norma Shaerer, Glen here's looks EXACTLY like Norma Shaerer did at 50(minus the heavy make-up)

For me, it was the opposite of what the critics say - With One Look, Glenn here struck me as a silent movie star. I was surprised how much she resembles one - Norma Shearer, yes, and Nazimova, and even a little Theda Bara when her eyes gleamed. With the kohl and thin, downward eyebrows, it is obvious that Glenn (and the makeup artist(s) ) had put some research into the makeup. It is very convincing to me, as an artist who is constantly frustrated with the unauthentic period makeup in many movies, eg. biopics of Mae West (Jillian), Harlow (Baker), The Artist, and even Doctor Zhivago.

I think Glenn Close probably looks better than *most* silent movie stars after they'd gotten older. Close has aged incredibly well - she's more attractive now than when she was 30. Whereas many of the old Hollywood actresses peaked very young and aged quite poorly.

This is clearly the Best Broadway Musical I ever saw while I didn't see the original production due to the fact I was born 8 months before it opened in November of 1994 23 year later I finally see it on Broadway in this Acclaimed Revival and it was the best musical I ever experienced on Broadway! HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL BROADWAY FANS WHO WERE BORN IN 1994 should go see this magnificent revival before it departs June 25th 😀

As someone who has dealt with mentally unstable family on numerous occasions, I can tell you she played a breakdown perfectly. Obviously projected for the stage but really, very accurate. It also of course depends on who's characteristics you're comparing to, which in my case it was someone with borderline personality disorder which Norma indeed has many traits of. When I watch other actresses in this role I can never pin point the approach they're taking and the character development gets lost to me. Not to say there hasn't been many great Normas but next to Gloria Swanson, Glenn OWNS this role.

Fair but who can say whether she doesn't or does have a personality disorder as a result of the abuse she may have endured throughout her lifetime? The particular disorder I was writing of shares characteristics that Ms. Close as Norma displays throughout the show. Just an observation.

Miss Glenn Close was maybe the only ONE that she performed the role as Norma Desmond with her perfection in voice and acting...She was perfect as Norma Desmond with a necessary psycho touch needed too for the role ...I watched the musical in West End 1994 with Elaine Page, and was wonderful..But Glenn was the ONE ..!!! bRAVO!!!!
