Final Vendetta Review! A New Classic Beat Em' Up!

Ойындар

Final Vendetta Review! A New Classic Beat Em' Up! Released beneath the massive hypewave of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge, comes a fantastic new Beat em' Up in the style of Street of Rage and Final Fight, Final Vendetta! Many reviews right now are giving the game a 7/10 and a shoulder shrug, but I think the game is absolutely worth the attention of all beat em' up fans, especially those who love and appreciate the genre within the arcade. Featuring authentic combat and level design (impressively authentic) as well as polished visuals and a bumping soundtrack, I cannot get enough of this game. In this review we discuss the combat design, level design, difficutly, strategy, modes, graphics, sound, exploits, patches, and really dig into what makes this game tick and why it is a game arcade fans are absolutely going to enjoy. The big question mark with this game however, as with all indie arcade games, is will it have a sequel? Will we see a Final Vendetta 2 and a cool new franchise, or is this just a one and done experiment that seems to be the rule of law among western developers these days? Places like Nintendo Life are already asking, "is it worth it?" but I think that's the wrong question :-)

    Hey! Thanks so much for checking out Final Vendetta, we're so happy to hear you enjoyed the game! We've been adding a few things to the game patches to try and make some things feel a bit more accessible to both casual beat em up fans AND hardcores. We've added a casual mode w/ unlimited lives, a few gameplay balances and some modern control options (to make dodging and blocking a bit easier). This is currently live on Steam but should be rolling out to Consoles slightly later when all patches are approved :)

    That's awesome you checked out my review! The patches sound really cool! Just don't nerf the combat (outside of exploit fixes ha), no matter how many people whine on steam. I get adding the continues patch, since every review would not stop complaining about this, but I actually thought the initial version that forced people to play for the 1cc was pretty rad! Maybe with the credits you can add in some text and sound that shames them with each credit. A voice clip that yells "WIMP WIMP WIMP!" that would be great XD

    Hey, thanks for the amazingly in-depth interview of Final Vendetta - it's great to hear players such as yourself appreciating the technical side of the game, and the occasional exploit! ;) We heard you calling out for us to make a sequel, and it certainly makes a lot of sense - we've learnt a huge amount in the past couple of years (and even the past week), and we could also bring many of the character sprites back with a bit of a refresh. I think you're right about some of the designs, and that's definitely an area we could improve on in places. For now we're concentrating on finishing the Neo Geo AES / MVS version but a sequel is definitely on the cards given the amazing reception the game's received. Thanks again, and please look out for future updates which should improve the game further. :)

On the technical side is amazing, the more you play the more you learn about moves and scoring tricks. Enemies design and entrances are pretty badass. Personally i have very small complaints i'd like faster weapon wield, as it's very risky picking them up right now, because of how slow main characters wield them. Also the main characters walking animations could use a small tweak (especially Miller and Claire) , not completely re-animating them or anything, just edit a frame here and there, for example have Claire lift here feet a bit more so it doesn't look like she's walking on ice/moonwalking. While Miller seems rotate his torso/arms too much, more than 120° 😅, he looks like a rotating mechanical crane. He's like an over correction of FF1 Haggar walk animation lol. Also some backgrounds tend to look a bit too simple and empty, not the first level but rather from the dock onwards where the building almost have no details. And i'm writing this because i care and really really liked the game, mad respect to the devs, this comes from someone who actually have played most major beat em ups ever released, so i hold the genre very high up. And finally i absolutely agree with Mark here please, please, please continue honing the craft don't jump ship after this title, do a continuation, many Japanese developers themselves used to say that they would never have developed the industry arcade icons if it weren't for all their previous experience in iterating. Repetition is key.

    I'm convinced some of the arcade Beat em Ups are designed with credit-feeding in mind. Especially the ones that basically cannot be 1CCed unless you use cheese tactics or exploits. To me it would be worse if ports of these games did not have infinite credits. Just show the credit count at the end and that does the trick for me.

  • @superfightman2053

    @@Steve-Fiction I think this is a very normal thing to believe, and it's probably even correct. The developers of these games really do have themselves to blame, regardless of intent. It's also a very strong argument for doing what the developers of Final Vendetta did here. By not having a continue system at all they very quickly PROVE that their game does not fall in that trap and that not only CAN the game be 1CC'd fairly easily, it's the only way to beat the game AT ALL.

  • @TonyTonyRedgrave

    @TonyTonyRedgrave

    @@Steve-Fiction I think many if not most of them were made for more than one credit for sure, but not infinite. Infinite, free credits in a game where you respawn on the spot is just invincibility, it's hardly even a game. I appreciate ports that give you a limited stock of credits per run more.

The hardest mode just felt like they made the bosses bullet sponges (or stick sponges). As EU points out, you can spam the specials by charging them in a corner again and again too. I didnt know this, and even playing normally was bored. I did go through the game once on my own and then again with 2 other players. I probably spent about 5 hours with it but lost interest minutes in. I think the game was ok for what it was but prefer a more challenging beat em up that gets to the point. 20:00 Another fantastic example is Blazing Chrome which is a bona-fide sequel to Contra Hard Corps and the best Contra game released since that one - but it's not an official Contra game. That does make it a bit harder to market (especially since there was also an official Conra game released, but the less we say about Rogue Corps the better), but it also frees it from the clutches of the original developer interfering too much. Sometimes the stars align and you get Developers licensing the IP and you get Sonic Mania or Streets of Rage 4. And other times, it's just better to do your own thing. (Also, stuff like Gunlord X which is basically an Indie Turrican sequel, even if it's not as good as others on this list). I do agree on your comments on sequels though: I wish that some of those indie studios would make sequels to polish the things that didn't make the cut. If Sega stopped after Streets of Rage 1, that would have been okay - but the world is a better place because they didn't stop and made Streets of Rage 2.

    As far as the credit question is concerned I feel like NGDev team already solved this in Razion EX. When you first boot up the game you have 0 continues, but you slowly unlock additional credits as you play the game and game over. You won't have enough credits to brute force credit feed until you've put around 5-6 hours in, at which point you've learned the basic mechanics and likely memorized bullet patterns/enemy placements for the first few stages. IMO it's the perfect balance of accessibility and forcing the player to git gud, it also encourages shitty players to keep going for just one more run since you're virtually guaranteed to see a bit more of the game after every game over. Not sure why more indie home arcade releases don't take this approach. As much as some of us may appreciate the "hardcore" no extend design the sad fact (as evidence by steam reviews and even this comment section) is it objectively hurts sales, I think this is the best compromise.

    Yet another fantastic looking indie release I somehow managed to miss completely. Sounds great, looks great, I'm gonna give it a shot. I definitely recognize a couple of these sprite animations from both King of Fighters and Streets of Rage, though I'm sure they drew from a lot more games. As for that special sauce aspect you mentioned that mainstream reviewers seem to be looking for - maybe I'm just getting old, but I've personally come to the conclusion that this special factor is ultimately just PR buzz/budget, or the general excitement/marketability an IP generates in the eyes of reviewers. Shredder's Revenge being a great example for this. In my mind this seems to be the defining factor in pretty much most entertainment media in general these days in that the actual quality of the product in question doesn't matter anymore, it's all just about how recognizable or marketable a thing is.

    ha very true! Though I think they took him too literally, where I believe he was describing the polarity mechanic rather than actually saying ikaruga is a puzzle game XD also, devs say a bunch of stuff about there games that should be taken with a grain of salt. For example, dodonpachi's chain system was described as a "combo" system from sf2, but that doesn't make ddp a fighting game. I think ikaruga is similiar with how polarity is an element, but doesn't shift the genre entirely.

    I enjoyed watching the review, especially since I’m someone that waited for the update to add casual mode before I bought it but kept coming back over and over again at higher difficulties because of how tight and enjoyable the design is. I completely echo your plea to the developer: please make a sequel. I would really enjoy even more of this. You nailed it about the pacing. I’ve played a lot of different beat-em-ups recently and the quick pacing, good variety and lack of filler really stand out. There’s no level that I feel like I “need to power through to get to the good stuff” unlike, for instance, much of the industrial level in Final Fight. I really love how cohesive and consistent the game is, too. It borrows from a lot of different influences but it never starts to feel like a post-modern pastiche (unlike a lot of fan games and mods that try to add as much as possible).

But after watching your review I realized I really wanted to get into it, and it's currently on sale on both Steam and Switch (I will probably end up with both lol). It's a great alternative to SoR4 and up there in a very nice class with Mayhem Brawler. Great stuff, interesting enemies, great moves, love the art style, and KILLER soundtrack. Just love it!

    The whole stomping on enemies has been inspired by the Crime Fighters serie. The biggest influence for this game has obviously been Streets of Rage 3 but there's some nod here and there to Vendetta. I'm not mentionning Final Fight since it's Streets of Rage's exoskeleton anyway. You should try Vendetta if you have never played it before. It's available on Switch. One of the best Konami, and definitely one of the best game inspired by Double Dragon. There are not that many "not based on Final Fight" good belt scrolling beat'em up on the market, and it's one of these. I'll be so interested in participating to an in depth discussion about how beat'em up have evolved, I mean mechanically, from Samuraï in 1980, to Way of the Passive Fist in 2018. It has gone through so many interested stages. The contributions of Renegade and Final Fight are often underestimated or misunderstood at best. Then you also have the whole "we need longer combos era" that started with Alien vs Predator, Guardians (and quite at the same time on the fighting scene with Killer Instinct, Children of the Atom)... and what I like to call the quite new "Punch-Out!!" branch which you summerized gracefully in your review by speaking about "having a thousand chances to get out of any situations".

    The best thing about Final Vendetta is the fact that it’s so short. Beat ‘em ups in general almost always run out of steam around two thirds through and feel a bit tired as a result. Final Vendetta ends before it gets to this point and it feels super tight and massively replayable because of it.

    Correct on all points. Thank you for focusing on the moves and fighting mechanics, as that is what really differentiates beat 'em ups. A couple litmus tests for me are whether the game incorporates running moves and whether it incorporates ground moves, and this game has both. The no-credit decision was also awesome, as it goes back to the root of arcade gaming before they became pay-to-win. This makes high scores matter and creates depth where there would be none. Compare this to Capcom's Beat 'Em Up Bundle, which has awesome games that have the lasting appeal of cotton candy, as they are balanced for quarter feeding and nothing more. Although FV may be the best beat 'em up going right now, I do think there's some room for improvement: - Ditch the deadly environmental hazards. Not fun. - Enhance the ground game. Ground kicks are fun and effective but I'd like even more depth. - Super moves are ho-hum. - Some of the moves could use some TLC like the girl's back flip kicks. They just lack gusto. - Jump kicks are a bit too effective. Maybe train the AI to punish you if you keep doing the same thing. I love bouncing off opponents though! - Maybe zoom the view out a bit to show us more enemies. - Even more moves! There's room for a few more. - Find a way to fit all this into 3 buttons instead of 4, and don't use the triggers at all; make it so we don't even feel the need for shortcut buttons. There are times when a button press does nothing; that's evidence that refinement is needed. - Make blocking matter more. Maybe add some block-exclusive moves?

    I watched you stream some 1cc practice and was very impressed with what I saw. My only complaint about the game is the one BogHog mentioned. Some animations look stolen directly from SNK neo-geo fighting games and other beat em ups. Tazoc, Maxima, Whip and Shingo from KoF definitely "donated" some animations. But it's not the end of the world. I think that explanation for why the animations look almost identical is probably the truth. The smart move here is a drastic price drop, take the money and pivot into a sequel asap. They've got the tools now and come in at a lower price. The timing was just terrible and the fact it was the same price as TMNT - going up against Shredder's Revenge was never going to be a good time. You've not only got the nostalgia trip of a loved francise, but it came out of Dot Emu which gave it the kudos of coming from the same company as SoR4. Most people don't know or care about the difference between a dev and a publisher. A lot of the reviews even went this way which I found odd. edit - what did you think of Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection?

  • @TheElectricUnderground

    @TheElectricUnderground

    Yeah I think maybe a modest drop to $20 or even a more heavy drop to $15 would be good. That being said, I think once the turtles wave has died down (which seems to be about now), Vendetta will get more shine. Still, they probably lost out on the DF big review outlet coverage that they would have gotten if Turtles wasn't at the same time. And yes, people need to do their homework on the developer vs publisher, even I got tripped up for a min. For a sec I thought the Steel Assault team made turtles and then was wondering "did they get hit on the head by a rock, how did they forget great design?" (I love steel assault ha). 15:50 Yeah, that's how I do it, too. :P Doing the same thing over as a means of learning isn't good content imo, it's padding. Other games teach the player and let them master the mechanics through a longer campaign/story, no repeats required. I think you've a very niche mindset that won't mesh well with a wider, more commercial playerbase.

  • @quackstack4246

    @quackstack4246

    Not liking the playstyle is one thing but you can't honestly call it padding when it's the exact opposite - tightly concentrated, focused content. Modern action game length is all smoke and mirrors anyway, they are like 2-3 hours of solid action game content stretched out over 8+ hour games, and they still encourage replays for higher difficulties, ranks, score, and so on for mastery. Can't think of a challenging game which you can master without a shit ton of repetition

  • @HighLanderPonyYT

    @HighLanderPonyYT

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@quackstack4246 I mean, I've the feeling that a lot of people would consider repeating something while going for a higher score padding. Scores and self-enforced challenge runs aren't that interesting to the average gamer. As I said, the player could master the game over one playthrough that's longer and more varied instead of several playthroughs of a shorter loop. The player would learn all the same but it wouldn't turn off the crowd who consider a game done after one clear. (How that'd affect the crowd that does like repeating for mastery is another question.) That said, I do like short and sweet... but a lot of people don't. They have metrics for money spent per hour of playtime and whatnot. I'm not saying I wouldn't like the game, I'm saying that if the devs want a commercially successful game, it might not be the best fit for the market.

    @@HighLanderPonyYT Well then as far as I can tell, the definition of padding those people use contradicts common definitions, and goes against the concept of challenge/mastery entirely. I mean, scoring ain't fundamentally different from other kinds of mastery like no death clears, no hit, efficiency/stylish play, is all of that just padding? I would argue not because padding tends to refer to an over abundance of low quality content in between the main meat of the game, not just the game's mechanics having a lot of meat to them/difficulty. Players can't and won't master games over one playthrough unless those games are easy or repeat content a shit ton *within* a playthrough (samey encounters, checkpoint/boss restarts). And honestly, mastery/challenge themselves have very niche appeal, most players just don't play games for those things outside of multiplayer. That said, this is a solved issue - devs can make story modes for the average gamer where they put as many stages as they want, and then make short arcade modes with routes. It's a shame so few devs use this structure...

I'd honestly rate it equal position with SOR2 on the console. A lot of people don't know there was one, I guess it didn't sell a lot, so it's sought-after now.

    I found the game good (Better than TMNT) altough needs some polish. There are a few things i disliked , like not being able to use shoulders buttons for block, Also find that some bosses are cheap and you have to exploit the a.i. I Also i fell the characters are unbalanced (i always find duke easier) The special Attack forward is Also quite cheap. The weapon system is strange, slow and i never use weapons. Glad you did not follow the trend of most reviewers that Say the game is slow (quite the opposite).

    A game has been heavily denigrated by the press, which accuses it of being frozen in the past. However, I have much more fun with this Final Vendetta than with TMNT, which only has its pretty bodywork for it. The title (Final Vendetta) is visually basic and generic (although I liked its retro style which is indeed very NEO GEO, in particular by the chara-design of its sprites and its palette of bright colors), but the gameplay is for my part much superior to TMNT, it is much more technical and demanding than the latter. If you haven't done it, I recommend Vendetta (aka Crime Fighters 2 in Japanese version) from Konami, it's available in the arcade archives for the modest sum of 6.99 € (7.99 $US). Moreover Final Vendetta is the continuation of this very good beat 'em up rather unknown, I want to specify it because the majority of the journalists omitted to say it or quite simply do not know it.

    The reviews are out of control man. I recently got Ganryu 2 (an Electric Underground type of game IMO) and one of the reviews I read described the nature of the game (basically a classic arcade game that makes you start a somewhat unforgiving stage over when you die, except it does let you save between stages) as "repulsive."

    Funny I like your reviews all the time , but here.... I'm sorry, if westerns studio were struggling with arcade game, how do you explain... street of rage 4 ? Ok, you have a nice list of moves, but I play a little bit (less than 2 hours ...) at friend's house : I have seen those enemies, background before, back in the days, in 80/ 90ies. The constant "recycling" of enemies (oh... look! The same guy with... blond hairs !! Groovy ! oh... another ..hum...lady with a whip.... what an innovative character !!). I understand that you need to defend this "dying genre" in 2022... but still : for me Final Vendetta has only done the "minimal" work , here. I'm not saying it's a bad game... it's entertaining !! But I won't spend hours in it, that's for sure. It's only my humble opinion.

  • @TheElectricUnderground

    I actually have no need to defend a dying genre at all. I don't think that way. i won't rubber stamp a game as a good review if I don't like it, whatever is going on in the market or whatever. So that being said, I think the disagreement here is mostly on what we value. I really love this games mechanics and combat and don't have strong feelings about the graphics or character designs. yes, no doubt that are kinda bland, but I personally can forgive that. You mention that you like streets of rage 4 for being 2 hours long, and here i disagree as well. I am a fan of sor4 (I reviewed it twice ha), but I think that game's biggest weakness is its bloated length. I managed to get a Mania + 1cc, and let you tell you grinding out run after run, each lasting 2 hours, you really start to see the bloat in some of the level design. So I just disagree with that assessment of Sor4 vs Vendetta's level design.
