    Yeah, wtf, so disrespectful. If she put in the work I'd understand, but she was basically just standing there while Akiba was doing all the work trying to make a match. She deserved that shido at the end. And she had what, 50kg on Akiba? I get she's frustrated that she couldn't do anything against a tiny opponent, but she needs to not embarrass herself and the sport like that.

    Few countries have excelled for so long at jnternational level in their own national sport. Japanese Judo is technically so beautiful to watch. They are not always the strongest physically, but tactically and technically they are very well-trained and disciplined - coupled with lightning speed and explosive techniques when you least expect it.

    That's how commentator teams are set up: one 'play-by-play commentator' (self-explanatory) and one 'color commentator' to fill in the blanks in between plays. It's so that the play-by-play commentator gets to breathe, and also to cater to different audiences (not everyone wants a continuous drivel of technical terms). It has nothing to do with them being male or female. The roles are clearly defined so that they don't talk over or contradict each other, and they can be reversed. The only reason you tend to have more male play-by-play commentators is because it's still a very male-dominated profession, even though things are slowly changing.

    @@TheMochan555 True. The roles are also often reversed, with the main commentator being a media professional and the color commentator being a professional from the sport, so with the deeper technical knowledge. My point was that it has nothing to do with the gender of the commentators. Having one of the commentators not technically expert in the sport happens frequently in the Olympics, since a same pair of commentators may have to cover different disciplines throughout the day.

    @@emadalyahmed Not open weight exactly, It's "super heavyweight" meaning its the highest end of the weight brackets. At this size there aren't enough competitors so there's a cutoff weight (70kg I think? check the scoreboard in the video) and everyone above that weight can participate. Bigger isn't necessarily better though, at this size the larger weight can become a detriment, like we saw here where Fontaine basically looked tired after the first minute, and she's slow as heck and can't really move with coordination. All she had going for her is that she is too fat for her opponent to effectively throw, but thanks to silly Shido rules she can lose for inactivity, which is a real problem considering how heavy she is.

    here Judo is seen as the ideal sport to teach fair play, so french parents love sending their kids in the nearest dojo when they reach 6/7yo (at least that is how i see things, as a french who practiced judo as a kid and teenager) Also David Douillet and Teddy Rinner became really popular mediatic figures in France, which improved again the popularity of Judo .

  • @SmirkyWaters

    @SmirkyWaters

    2 жыл бұрын

    Adding to Loris Chappuis' response: I think it was also the result of a historical convergence. Jigoro Kano (the founder of Judo) himself came to Europe to introduce it at the beginning of the 20th century. He started his tour in France and was very well received. The French were perhaps more open and receptive to things coming from Japan, due to the strong influence of Japanese culture and arts ('Japonisme') among French artists and intellectuals in the late 19th/early 20th century (e.g. a lot of impressionists were strongly influenced by Japanese ukiyo-e). Judo was also introduced early and spread in France through the efforts of personalities like Mikinosuke Kawaishi and Shozo Awazu. Mikinosuke Kawaishi was actually sent to Paris in 1935 because he was commissioned by France to teach Jiu-Jitsu (judo being an evolution of Jiu-Jitsu) to the French Police. Later joined by Shozo after the war, they were hoping to spread judo across Europe, not just France, but they were based in France (the Japanese also being major francophiles, it was probably driven as much by choice as by circumstances) and Mikinosuke also got some early attention from some French personalities of the time (esp. in the intellectual and scientific community, like the Joliot-Curie, Moshé Feldenkreis, etc. who were particularly receptive to the philosophy and principles of the 'Gentle Way')... So none of this offers a direct causal explanation, but I think all of these elements played a role in why Judo grew much deeper roots in France than in any other European country. That early adoption and popularity just fed on itself and produced senseis and dojos until you had one everywhere---even in small towns and villages.

    As a French , When I was a kid in Normandie (rugby not being as popular in center or south France) there was a judo gym and a soccer club. My parents wanted me to learn nice behavior with the help of sport. I did not have any choice, got my brown belt a 17 yo. French judo federation (FFJDA) is part of the world judo federation (IJF) since long, and we have multiple world or/and Olympian champions since decades. That helps. Teddy Riner (I can't count how much times he's been Olympian/world/ Europe champion, it would take too long) is a superstar in France (comparable to Zidane) and is used to be invited in Japan, to teach Japanese athletes. Ronda Rousey as a World superstar has been Brown medalist in semi finals in 2008 cause she lost against a French woman , Jevrise Emman. david Douillet, Lucie Décosse, Jamel Bouras etc.... So much inspiration for kids and parents.

    dans la realite du combat de judo l'importance de dominer le prise de kimono est tellement strategique qu'il fait batailler bec et ongle pour esperer avoir une chance. On aimerait que ce ce soit autrement, mais on doit aussi etre realiste

    Il me semble qu'il s'agit d'une evolution assez recente de la competition. Pousse a l'extreme, ce "jeu de mains" porte prejudice a la beaute du judo de competition. Il faudrait adapte les regles pour recentrer ce sport sur ce qu'il est.
