15:35 As far as theories go, that isn't another timeline where zack lives, aparently, defeating the whispers have undone all that they did on past, present and future, so things like the artist that made stamp the dog a beagle and zack dieing were undone becouse of that, so the past changed a lot, but the party and sephiroth only have memories of the events as they were before entering the portal, and i think squere should leave anyone related to kindom hearts away from the script of final fantasy games.

This Combat System was just Another nail in this shits coffin for me. The System trys to be darksouls, but its Not. Reacting to Enemy attacks With skillful dodging Is impossible, attack is pure Button smashing, 0 tactics involved and to make up for the constant, unpreventable damage you eat, the Game throws a shitton of potions at you which Makes it Even less about skillful playing. Dont get me wrong, combat systems dont have to be about dodging and reacting quickly, but of they are Not, Then they shouldnt make me think That they are. This is the best remake that should not exist :S. Whisperers are the worst thing I have seen in a story ever. Introduced into a story/lore as a retcon. They have several functions: add a difference, be meta-commentary on both fans and creation, add possibilities, serve as a pseudo-final boss/antagonist, and above all they are used as cheap subversion (except the ending you have preventing Reno from dying and resurrecting Barret among a few). The worst aspect is that they are made to be really in our faces. They are supposed to be something used to prevent time deviations but as far as we know this is the only time they intervene and they only build up their failure. People say that Sephiroth is manipulating the party to defeat the whisperers but they are described as "the will of the planet". These people straight out expect the games to lie to us now. Tell us retcons or "solve" mysteries/definitions in the next installments. How can people enjoy this? It would not be good if Sephiroth used the whisperers for all the stupid things. The party knows that the whisperers know the future and represent the planets will but assume that there is a bleak future (and they do not mean bleak as in bleak for only humanity). The whole thing is stupid. Let's just hope it was all a bad dream or that the whisperers defeat defeated them even in the remake so that they are erased out of existence. That would be horrible storytelling but at least we can get back to FF VII -_-.

"...Update the combat.." The fuck? "Okay everyone, chess is outdated. We have far better war simulators now. Why are people still playing chess?" Is that what you're saying? Also you said "more character development". They turned Jesse from a team player who might have shyly had a crush on Cloud, to someone who forces herself on him and tries to get between Cloud and Tifa. Bugs and Wedge really aren't any more developed than in the original. They had Jesse join Cloud in rolling her eyes to Barrett's speech in the elevator even though all the members of Avalanche share that same passion. They made Aeris appear to be on the same side as Sephiroth because she's willing to risk the sure victory that's fated to happen just to save herself. I agree with you that they made a weird KH-esque sequel more than anything but you were still extreme light on this game.

The combat needed an update. People are always gonna have a problem with the change, but I personally loved it. I will say the extra character development, looking back, I was a little soft on. I should’ve been harder on it there.

  • @myownfriend23

    @myownfriend23

    3 жыл бұрын

@@thatguybis1997 There's no such thing as "updating the combat". That's definitely not how things work which is why I mentioned the chess example. Chess is essentially a war game as is any MOBA or strategy RPG but neither supercedes Chess. 3D platforners also didn't replace 2D platformers. Games may be software but that does not mean that updates apply to them in the same way as OS or something. FFVII had it's issues. It's English translation could have been better, it didn't support movement with the analog stick, targeting in battle was an issue at times, they didn't yet master the pre-rendered backgrounds thing which made some maps hard to understand, music transitions were very abrupt most of the time, the backgrounds were low resolution and couldn't scale , and it's clear that the in-game graphics weren't what they wanted them to be. These are all technical details that hindered the game and most of them were fixed in subsequent games. The game became a classic despite these technical limitations. It did not, however, become a classic despite it's gameplay and genre. The battle system worked exactly as it was meant to. If they didn't want to have a turn-based battle system then they wouldn't have done one originally. If there's any remaining barriers for games being appreciated as art, it's the video game players seem to have inability to see the actual gameplay as art. The degree that some people have embraced the remake makes me wonder what they liked about the original to begin with. Was it just that Cloud and Sephiroth looked "badass"?

A remake is where they remake the same game like Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes or the PS4 version of Shadow of the Colossus. Nobody wanted a remaster, they wanted a remake. • @vincentgraymore

    @vincentgraymore

    3 жыл бұрын

The problem is that all sides have the nostalgia glasses but the ones hating "purists" are getting a triumph card because purist in of itself is considered a bad word. However, they who hate purists are also blinded by nostalgia since they want the game to have Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Barret, Red XIII, Sephiroth, Midgar etc. They do not want the remake to be "FF XVI" because they want the stuff they love. I would not call myself a purist, nor would I want to claim that I wanted a remaster (because I do not think that a game that has an entirely new combat system, camera angles and layout could ever be classified as a remaster). The remake was lovable, even perfect at times but it was all undermined starting with Aerith's sense of Sephiroth in the intro and its escalation from there into whisperers and then slaying Fate itself. This remake could have been my dream but unlike that 60% that blindly love the game or the 20 % that like it but at least can admit it has flaws I get pushed into the last 20 % that more or less hate the game for any reason. I do not hate the game (it is a mixed bag as I want the game to be an 8). Rather I hate the fandom for accepting the whisperers addition but more importantly I hate that they try to silence me regardless if I am kind or not, love things or not just because I think SE messed up a very important point. I would rather join the hate group and show SE that this is not how you do a remake than joining those that blindly love whatever (because they get to see their favorite characters, and they claim to not be blinded by nostalgia -_-) or those that accept this game in hopes for the next. Seeing how the fanbase is also split into at least 3 big factions (Aerith live vs Aerith die, New random shit vs staying on course, Timetravel/cross-dimension that allows Zack and Sephiroth, etc to be time travelers) I cannot see how SE will be able to work on this franchise going more and more installments deeper as they will shave off a portion of the fanbase each game. Then again FF VII remake will overshadow the OG because of it simply being a feast for the eyes in the current year and the Og is already a bad timeline so remake will replace OG as "the real lore" as well. It will introduce a lot of new fans, a lot of new fans that have to be told that they play a game called "remake" but still have to get all the OG+ material to understand the game and that in of itself leaves out the core plot thread of the new game: Destiny and time shenanigans. -____- Most people will be okay to even more thrilled in the following parts of the remake but as of now, that crowd is ~80 % at best. When will things start to shake the boots? 60 %? Maybe some people will rejoin when their fix is in focus but the game is already after the first installment against the theme in the OG so they should just go as crazy as they want until people no longer care (even if Aerith dies and there are installments afterward, she could still be revived somehow because of how SE treated the presentation and subversion in part 1). I will not be fooled by the trailers if they like previously (except release trailer) try to hide these big subversive moments. I will wait until a big portion tells me that the next installment is backtracking or else I am seeking water on a PC release at best.

HD backgrounds upscaled via ai, better chibi models on the world map via ninostyles on the nexus, upscaled world map, remastered spell textures, 60fps, true widescreen, higher resolution menus, 60fps upscaled cutscenes with ninostyle chibi models inserted where appropriate (I still don't understand how they managed that bit of black magic), the list goes on but you get the idea. With a little bit of legwork (very little, the program 7th heaven makes it as simple as downloading what you want and checking a box) you can create the remake we all wanted.

I'm so mad if Zack's going to be alive. As you can tell from my User-name, Zack ist my most favorite Character. He is so lovable, goofy, nice, funny, honorable and always there for those dearest to him. I was heartbroken at the ending of Crisis Core even though I exactly knew what was about to happen. His death has auch an emotional impact after having gotten to know him so well in crisis core. Sure - Zack being alive and reuniting with Aerith would be the Happy Ending he deserves. But live doesn't always happen this way. Part of why he is my favorite character is because of his tragic fate. Because even the nicest ones don't always get a happy ending. Having him alive would take away all of that. And ultimately it would mean that nobody needs to suffer and everybody gets a happy ending. But life just doesnt work that way Apart from Zack as a Person, his death is crucial to the story and Clouds mental state. His plot is of such a significance to Clouds past that I can't Imagine how they'll handle the massive changes. Him beeing alive leads to none of clouds mental state, his behavior, his past and his Motivation making any sense. As sad as it is: Zack (and Aerith, too, by the way) HAVE to die. Final Fantasy VII is about loss and coping with it. With Zack and Aerith being alive it won't be Final Fantasy VII anymore. Just some bad fanfiction. Also in my opinion they took away so much of the menace and mystery of sephiroth by showing him way too early. And after having beaten him at the Ende of FF7R, what else is there to come in the other parts? Fighting him everytime as Boss will get boring and won't Serve the story...

I actually liked this review. As someone who grew up on the original, there really is a lot to complain about here. Even while considering this being a sequel, there're a lot of minor details that get changed about who the characters are that go against the reasoning behind the story of the original. I haven't played this since it came out at this point, but I recall Aerith saying a few lines that totally contradicted core aspects of the original, like she somehow regressed and forgot a couple things while somehow being an arbiter of the future? It just doesn't work for me. I don't recall right now; Has Zack communicated with Cloud subconsciously in this game at all? That was the alternate text whenever Cloud was out of it, right? Zack and Cloud knew each other, and Zack died while Cloud was struggling with mako poisoning, so I was assuming the whole time that Zack was trying to remind Cloud to be himself by communicating through mako, since mako is all spirit energy and Cloud should've been in a psychosis from the poisoning. This is also a comment on how the people close to us remain with us after death, like the commentary on Aerith's death being relative to the passing of Sakaguchi's mom. It is kind of sad for that to not be a major point here. Even as a sequel, the events that saved Zack occur at the very end of the game, so... why wasn't he provably dead before that? Has the nature of how mako works completely changed to make room for whispers? "I was curious about what would happen if I attempted to analyze life in a mathematical and logical way" really does sum up why there was something special with the original; They were trying to write for their own fulfillment. I only catch glimpses of this as past references in Remake, and it's really not a flattering contrast. When I wanted a remake as a teen (when they had the PS3 tech demo), it was because I automatically assumed the heart of this creation would be recaptured and further embellished on. I did not anticipate production teams multiplying in size making large projects more impersonal.

Nomura pulled a Kingdom Hearts on this game and can't wait to suck out thousands of dollars out of the fans pockets. I wouldn't put it past them to never have Open World in the next game and having nothing of the original story continue on. Not to mention never letting a single character die because 'sad feelings' are bad. Felt like this would be written better by children. Went from loving this game to hating it in a matter of chapters. Thanks for ruining one of my favorite games, Nomura.

"One of the best looking games I've ever played" ...? That's just like, your opinion man. I saw tons of low res textures that shocked me as they were reminiscent of early 2000 era games, clashing meshes (one example being outside of Don Corneo's mansion), glitches and flaws all over this game. Like rotating the camera angle around a stationary Cloud and the lighting/shadows change; that's not how physics works, he'd be lit the same from any angle no matter which way you look at him. A graphical praise is a bit misplaced, in my opinion. Sure the poly count in the high res textures of the main characters is impressive, they slacked on almost everything else. Just putting fancy atmospheric density, lighting flares, and overpowered reflections to mask it. Sometimes it just looks like a JJ Abrams wet dream. I totally agree about your critique of the whispers and being trapped in the linear paths. The music is varying in quality and style, some is completely terrible! The combat is a good part of this game, it's just too monotonous.. The weapon upgrade system was my favorite addition to final fantasy.

Even if they do manage to keep the same plot of the original games, it’s no longer a game about experiencing loss and learning to live through that grief. Preventing Aerith’s death seems like it’s going to be the whole focus of the story and even if she does die, the game is now about fighting fate. One thing I loved so much about the original was how real it was. Seriously! The only two things that were Fantasy about it were a tangible afterlife and limit breaks, and boy does the game dig deep into those two things creating power and magic. But the character and situations they found themselves in were very similar to our own world (corporation taking over the world and destroying the planet for the sake of profit, oppression of the working class, imperialism, etc). I really hate that the developers decided to have me, as these characters, destroy my hopes for me to share one of my favorite, pulp stories. Oh well. I personally still have the original and will continue to sing it’s praises. I do enjoy the battle system of this game, despite being terrible at it, but I won’t be telling people to play it nor do I expect to buy a PS5 and play it on there. If I must, I will watch Max Dood play it or something.

It's funny cuz after some years of looking into the game's story it is ABSOLUTELY still a story about loss and grief. Rebirth's trailers have shown that things are not taken at face value. While Zack is "alive" there are many many things pointing to the fact that it could all be another trick by the story to make us believe things will be different. Not to mention that in Zack's weird dimension or whatever it may be the ENTIRE TEAM is dead. Leaving Biggs to pick up the pieces, to deal with that loss. Figure out a purpose. All the themes of the OG are here and more potent then ever. Just gotta look a bit deeper into things instead of taking it all at face value. I for one do not trust the story they are leading us to believe. I think we are all in for a very rude awakening when Rebirth drops....

I actually enjoy what's been going on...so far....only bc I have hopes of everything being put back into its rightful place when the game is finished. I never knew who Tetsuya Nomura was until I completed the game and I told a buddy of mine that the game reminded me of Kingdom Hearts and that's when he told me about the director of the game "Remake" and what's funny is I've played KHs starting with Roxas story and wanted to get deeper with the game so I decided to attempt playing all the KH games, but gave up when I got to the one when you attack using cards, which I thought was stupid so I gave up on it completely😂. I'll never accept this game to be a sequel, they would've been fine with no controversy if they had just followed the original story line, but I can appreciate what they are doing as long as they don't ruin the integrity of the characters that were sacrificed to create such a masterpiece. Anyone that grew up playing the original knows this is more than just a game to us. I really don't see this more than just a fanfiction game. The story was already told and ended in the original. I will play Rebirth and I will be spoiling the very last game they come out with before I even attempt that, which sucks, but I refuse to finish a game that completely ruins the story of its original by reviving important characters that played a significant role into making such a masterpiece.

I'm not gonna pretend like I was/am some big Final Fantasy fan. I was never really into turn-based RPGs so I never got around to playing the original FF7 and I was hoping that the remake would be the perfect way to get into the game and experience the story but when I heard that they changed so much of it and did it for the worst, I was so depressed to hear that. The one time I probably could've found a way to experience FF7 and they go and blow it. I mean it's cool to hear that the combat is great in the game but in a game like this, it really doesn't mean much if the story is crap But honestly as soon as it was revealed that Tetsuya Nomura was the director for the remake as well as being the writer for the story, that really should've marked the big giant red flag in things. I think Nomura is a decent artist (even if he suffers from same face syndrome as demonstrated in the Kingdom Hearts series) but he's just a shit story writer. Look at what he did with Kingdom Hearts, it's just a mess. I just feel like unless he's gonna be making his own game franchise, he should be nowhere near a remake of a game if it isn't just strictly art design. Oh and what you said about the music, that's kinda how I feel about most modern games in general. Like I mea cinematic score type of music is fine and all but I think part of the charm of OSTs from the 5th generation was how because technology wasn't too advanced, video game composers would get really experimental with their songs and I just miss that kinda approach when it comes to video game OSTs. Orchestral songs are fine but because they're so overused now in most video games, they just don't stand out all that much and I would rather take an experimental type of OST over generic orchestral music but that's just me. Anyway I enjoyed the review. It's such a shame that they really dropped the ball with this game's narrative. They had one job, just one. Touch up the story a bit while keeping it the same. But nope, they had to go all Kingdom Hearts with it and it just completely weakened the story in the process, what a waste.

I have tried to fight for people like you. People that either missed or didn't play the OG and wanted to get into the actual story of FF VII with this remake but are confused and/or sad that they do not get the OG experience. I do not expect a remake to be the magical 1:1, but they did not have to make a multiple timeline pseudo-sequel that has flash forwards and basically tells us the OG was a bad timeline by fourth wall breaking and in-game dialogue even saying "we can change it, make it right". It is like an uphill battle against well armed firearms troops barricaded in concrete bunkers while I am left with the crappy starting gear of a rusty sword and wooden shield. Many old fans that found the subversion great and new people that are bedazzled by graphics or just the excellent characterization silence everyone not loving the game like an Inquisition. I have seen content creators fall victim to mobs by people that love the game and are now afraid of covering FF VII news. The thing I wanted the most was to be able to try and convince people (my friends) to like FF VII in the same/similar manner that I did. When I played the remake with a pal his mind became "poisoned" forever by now having alternative versions of the characters and timelines combined with fighting fate incarnate on his mind which was far from what happened in the OG. He cannot get the OG experience anymore, and he will never play an old JRPG. My heart bleeds for the new legacy of FF VII Remake which is that of being more than less different in comparison to the OG. Either being "bold" and going full out different, sequel or not, or being bashed for backtracking. The meta discussion has to a large extent overshadowed the story itself. Despite all this most people like it, old and new and I do not really get it. I thought people wanted to experience the story again or for the first time and not getting whatever this game will be defined as. Instead, people value their hype and excitement of the unknown, which will last a few years while the story of OG being a masterpiece could have been eternal. Then again many-most people claim this is a masterpiece and that it is simply better and just an extended version, so people with criticism should just shut up. Sorry if this was spoilery and long :S. Edit: The vast majority love the game just a FYI. :S. All metrics show this by reviews and polls.

While I still prefer turn-based battles, FFVIIR's combat system is probably the best real-time action battle system in an RPG. BUT I've never liked the stagger mechanic because it turns every boss fight in FFVIIR into overly long battles where you feel like you are barely doing any damage for way too long until they finally let you deal decent damage. And then you usually have to repeat that stuff for two other phases before you can defeat the bosses. Boss fights always feel like they are just on the verge of being too long and grindy. I agree with everything you say on the story. They ruined it. -_- Stupid fan-service Sephiroth... They had one job to do. It was pretty much a freebie. And they somehow screwed it up. I mean lots of. There is no end. You play one minute and then there are 30 minutes of cutscenes. If you include only fighting gameplay, that is even smaller. Honestly, I don’t understand why this is considered a controversial opinion. This game was a betrayal of the original, pure and simple. FFVII’s significance was due in part to its commitment to its themes of death, loss, and impermanence. These themes are present throughout the game from beginning to end. They are a fundamental component of FFVII’s identity as a work of art. To say that the ending of remake spits on these themes would be a massive understatement. When you do a remake of a work of art, if you take the same characters, the same setting, the same music, and the same broad story beats, it is in service of nothing if not the themes of the original. Just look at the new remake of All Quiet On The Western Front. It shares very little with the text of the original novel in terms of what happens in the plot, but the characters and the themes are there. I can enjoy it as a remake of the original, because it is so evocative of those original themes, and makes me experience a similar emotional response. In that regard, Remake objectively fails. By removing this world of its permanence, you remove the most important pillar of FFVII. Which is why so many of the comments from the devs are so confusing. They seem to fully understand the assignment, and even said in certain interviews that the Whispers and Sephiroth are only present because they wanted a dramatic final boss fight, and the Motorball didn’t seem climactic enough. They seem to acknowledge that it was a contrived subplot. They acknowledge that the plot will play out much the same. And yet, I find myself unable to trust them purely based on how strongly Remake speaks to the contrary. I’m holding out hope that Rebirth and whatever the third game is called will tie it all together, but I wouldn’t be surprised if I wind up disappointed.

I laughed hard when the Benny Hill music came on. The more time goes on, the more I think the remake's story changes are not just awful, they're incredibly weird as well. They're both simultaneously passive-aggressive towards the original fanbase and a lot of the things the original fanbase loved about the original game, at the same time as they're a runaway train of fanservice tropes. It's a weird mess of the dead hand of Nomura (Why they put him in charge of this after FFXV, only to sack him as director for the second part is beyond me) and a kind of commercialised lunge towards what they hoped would sell. (Sephiroth for days, nobody dies, bringing back Zack etc) Anyway, given S-E made it abundantly clear what they thought of the OG fanbase in the first part of the remake, I wish them all the luck they deserve when it comes to selling future parts.

All this and more. It was not what was expected and promised before. Purist or not... Since the merge, after FFX and the abandonment of the core idea to never make sequels, prequels and spin-offs (yes, that was a vital agreement, even if it meant bleeding money), Squaresoft and Enix (both legends in their respective days) have lost me and I never have spent a single cent on them since - just watched from afar. Ever since FFX-2 and many, many weird titles more havw proven my decision right. Some things need to die, even legends - only then they can stay legendary, before destroying themselves and the legacy they built. As they did and continue to do. Allowing Nomura (a character designer and visual artisst, and even he had some lucky hits with parts of FF7c and KH1) to direct is all proof one needs to see that. Endless growth is ultimately destructive and this cinematic, graphic-centered hot mess was the last nail in the coffin for S-E to prove that, and they earned it. They have long lost the need for story and art interested suporters, as they have fans now (fan = short for: fanatic), that are interested in spectacle, drool-inducing visuals and nothing more. S-E: "Fuck core principles of game design and make the ching ching with fanservice!" I too wish them luck, as it is just a business - nothing more. As with most games. That's just the reality.

100% agree. The game had some rough spots that made me groan at times but the good parts were amazing. Chapter 16 was the climax for me. Climbing up the stairs of Shinra HQ in iconic fashion, and the reimagining of the upper floors with the guided tour, mayor's library, recreation area, and board meeting. Getting a view of midgar from the full length glass windows of Shinra HQ top floors was truly spectacular, and the VR Shinra propaganda was also breathtaking. Then came Chapter 17 which started weirdly, then a big slog, but sure I'd been through draggy sections before in earlier chapters no biggy and then things all went downhill when we reached the President's office. At the end of Chapter 16 I was pretty excited and looking forward to replay this game multiple times so I could experience it without getting lost and also skipping the side quests for a more compact experience. By the end of Chapter 18 I was in disbelief and disillusioned. I was so disappointed. Never had I finished a game and just felt so unsatisfied and so unhappy about it. It was 2am, I'd spent 50 hours over the last 5 days on the game and here it was in the final few hours that everything about the game was ruined. I couldn't even sleep in peace and kept looking up what the hell people think of this ending. It was already 6am when I finally went to bed.

The original isn't as fluid, like it's easier to get lost especially if you don't pay attention. You can discover hidden bits of the game. Like when I played I walked into the Honey Bee inn. My friend played it and completely skipped it which I didn't think was possible. The original has a lot of secrets and some I saw that I can't even find anywhere on Google. It's not perfect in that sense... yet it keeps a mystique.. And the original still does a much better job with the storytelling, dialogue, the darkness and grit. So you have to use your imagination to visualize the real characters over the old, just like we had to do in back in the day. Don't rush the game, get lost in it, and it'll make sense.

Its been this way with every product created after the Enix merger. The more control Enix (the dominate party in that merger) took over the company the steeper the visual aspects of the games got, while the depth of everything else plummeted. As someone whose an OG Square fan that still plays the older games to this day, if I could describe Enix in an analogy, it would be that Enix is akin to a very shiny puddle. In the art department, their products are always superb, but depth wise, almost everything they create is as shallow as a puddle. And 90% of the time, if it manages not to be shallow, its only because they copied mechanics from a now dead companies ancient intellectual property. And hell, they couldn't even get that right with FF7 remake. FFX was one of the last games that had any resemblance to a Square product, and even then you could practically smell the Enix influence in it looking back now. X-2 chronologically was the last game I played fully through, and that was only due to my attachment to the characters from X. Everything after that is a let down after a let down, if not narratively (usually the case), then mechanically (so don't start with that FFXII shit). I always found it ironic that because Sakaguchi made one bad business decision involving a certain infamous movie and they got rid of them (despite him and others being the only reason Square made it past FF1 and single-handedly built the multi million dollar franchise enix survives on remakes of today). Yet Enix spent the next 10 years losing money for the square brand after ousting him and never accosted itself for being such a fuckup afterwards before finally finding its disgraceful niche as a publisher first and foremost of other peoples games, and spending 2 decades remaking/porting someone elses games from 20-30 years ago (that they got fired nonetheless) to stay afloat. Unfortunately Square's history, like so many other game development studios from the past is no longer a unique story, as this has happened to most of the previously independent developers from yesteryear that saw their demise in the publisher boom of the 2000's

What's more I can read into your mind, and I also use blood transfusions to help me get into character when I'm acting. In other words, being grounded isn't about being set in Alaska vs Midgar. It's about respecting the boundaries and conditions of the world being explored. This is why The Twin Snakes was so much less grounded than MGS: Twin Snakes had Snake jumping off of missiles mid-air and dodging bullets, whereas MGS only had the Ninja doing those sorts of things. Likewise, FF7 has characters with swords that can fight armies, but they still get hurt or die if they fall from too high, they still have power scaling that they can't readily overcome, and they still keep the story narrative focused on the game's primary themes. In FF7R, depending on the needs of the plot, falling may or may not be dangerous, Sephiroth may or may not be too powerful to overcome, and themes of fighting destiny and fate overshadow themes of loss and permanence.

The saddest thing is that the industry and fans are praising this game for having that message (enough to be nominated for best story and game direction and will be on more or less everyones top 5-10 games of the year if not first, although a rather shitty year for games in my opinion). People love that SE are seemingly hostile towards the fanbase because they are fed articles about how toxic fans are, when in reality those fans are being burnt left and right and complain for a reason. I wonder what would happen if SE turned hostile towards them, I doubt they would love it. It is an edgy move by SE and not really done before but there was a reason why remakes has an establishment of being similar rather than different. This game destroys the gaming industry term of remake as it makes people expect sequels instead, and it puns the word to try and be clever, fooling new people into a fandom by false premise. As a sequel it requires explanations when one jump into it, yet everyone treats it as it is a great first FF VII title. I wished another title would have done this before FF VII (having remake in the title as something else than being a remake) so that everyone wasn't so bedazzled by this subversion type of GoT subversion now is loved within gaming.

My interpretation of the FF7 remake story is that both Aerith and Sephiroth have somehow projected their consciousness back through time. Aerith now has knowledge of the future, and both are acting differently, both are instantly tormented my Whisperers.

The Whisperers being a force to keep destiny/history on track, they venomousl try and keep the original story in check. (This is very meta, I can only imagine the writters wanting to be let loose in this FF world). A task the Whispers do pretty well until right at the end, when after the gang of five (including red) escape Midgar, Sephiroth cuts a portal to a new reality. This is where everything changes, here Zack is seen alive, carrying another Cloud, where an avalanche team are actually killed in a reactor explosion, and where even another Sephiroth may reside. On entry the Heroes are goaded by Sephiroth and destroy this realities ‘Whisper King’. A being who sees the heroes as an infectious force, shattering this realities continuity. On its defeat, all bets are off. This is the heroes faux pas, Sephiroth couldn’t defeat the Whisper king, this barrier between realities, not without the help of our heroes. Now he has a whole new world to take over.

I think the new game will be 80-90% the same as the original games disk 1-2, but with a twist on Sephiroths endgame. There are now two Clouds, perhaps Zack’s catatonic Jenova infused version become a complete Sephiroth clone, who knows?

The heroes may need to return to their reality at some point, and sacrifices will surely be made. There is a lot of promise, but I am worried the tendency for Japanese story telling to get crazy wacky and super meta, they could really mess this up.

 Hopefully not! Let see.

I can understand wanting "whatifs" or new content but I cannot understand people wanting time travel and dimensions in a series that has more or less actively avoided them for so many titles. It is like people do not care about a world and its setting and it becomes like WoW where every trope possible exists in the end. SE chooses to add them in a "remake" of all places. The problem is that as someone that liked everything FF VII (and "casual" not earth/fate/time shattering) in this game the whisperers foundations and rules retcons FF VIIs lore into oblivion but people do not care about the world at all (just the characters and locations). Trading a few years of curiosity for a classic story that will now forever be compared and undermined because of the fidelity of the "new story" seems to be of the highest order of disrespect to me. And when these people's curiosity is shattered by Aerith still dying and Zack never joining the party as well as no additional Sephiroth I will not share a tear. When all fan theories are wrong I will not offer any mercy. I am not confident in them actually going the same route as the OG but if they do not then the OG will really just be the bad timeline. Literally, something to that is less "worth" and many people will not get into because of outdated mechanics and 90s game fidelity. In my eyes a remake is not supposed to overshadow and forget the OG, it is supposed to enhance and bring forth the OGs qualities without changing the core and story (but yes I am very well aware that people cannot even agree on this but where was the core of Fate, ghosts connected to all time and space as well as a Sephiroth time traveler in the OG+?). A sequel is supposed to build upon the franchise to further the quality of that series, big retcons are the worse thing they can do. DoC suffered heavy backlash for it and it was tame in comparison to the remake (it is also funny how DoC is now praised as it can elevate the remake, not the world of FF VII OG+). OGs fall from grace will only get worse for each installment in the remake as more and more people will stick to the remakes modern aspects. Each installment will perhaps increase the sales and playthrough of the OG but it will not be because people are interested in FF VII but because they are interested in FF VII remake. Instead of looking for similarities, people will now obsess at looking at differences or rather how to implement them. People talk about the themes being destroyed but they are not even present and going forward it will be very hard to get back to anything even resembling it as the OG and remake stand in stark contrast in regard to theme and execution. The game does not have "added details" because these additions are insanely important as a concept of the world. It is like we would have another form of gravity added to our world but and if our world was like this remake we would be able to defeat that "new" gravity. It is not silly, it is beyond silly. As much as I liked all the characters, presentation, and style I just get angry when I think that we are not playing Cloud, Tifa, Barret, Aerith and Nanaki vs Sephiroth. We are playing Cloud 2, Tifa 2, Barret 2, Aerith NG+/0 and Nanaki 2 ½ vs Sephiroth NG++. Zack 3.0 gets to live as well as Biggs 2.

So my thought on this game... Based on the fact that the FF7R opening scene with Aerith is more akin to the scene with Aerith at the end of the OG, the OG never happened. It was just a vision. A premonition of the future Aerith has while communing with the Life Stream via the broken mako pipe. Just imagine waking up tomorrow knowing everything that will happen over the next few months. THAT, is the position Aerith is in. The Whispers were attempting to strip her of her memory of that vision. But we slayed them and recovered Aerith's memories. The rest of the journey is an open book, which is a great thing, because while there is a definite foundation for major change, there is an equal chance sh! t can happen to put things right back on the OG rails. Personally I'm thinking, but not expecting, choices we make in quests and dialogue to steer the plot one of two ways.

If thy remake ff8 for example, will they try and derail the main story for the sake of subverting expectations too? Or is ff7 just a special case?

Yes I was expecting a remake more true to the original story, but what we got imo was actually pleasantly surprising. I love the fact its like basically a what if scenario. Kind of like resident evil 2 remake, that game did a similar thing and that got praised while ff7 remake gets shunned by many (and I don't understand why, I thought the new plot was actually very good and still close enough to the original game that I enjoyed it). I am actually glad they didn't stay 100% true to the original story, because now I do not know what to expect in the plot and that makes it exciting. Its worth noting that Aeriths tampering with Sephiroths portal could be her attempt at preventing or altering his reality. Shes aware of the trap he setup for the party fall into. If you noticed, shes hesitant on tampering with it because she doesnt know of the implications this will have on the future, yet knows Sephiroths ideal cant or shouldnt happen. She only knows that if she doesnt do something at that moment, the future will be bleek and makes that last ditch effort. It can also be implied or inferred that her attempt/altering was also made on impulse for her desires, say for Zack to live and them to be together. I think this could be highly likely, as when we see Zack pass through Aerith and she feels his presence, she stops and her expression portrays a feeling of doubt and regret. She then says she misses the steel sky, from this we can deduce that she feels guilty for her actions due to the uncertainty and chaos shes likely caused for this new unknown future, and wishes she didnt make that decision. I dont think anyone has even touched on the significance those scenes have. Also we likely fight a clone at the end.

There are many points that I agree with you on, especially the change in story which for me is a No-Go since the original was better for me as it is. Having finished the OG, it is a masterpiece which shouldn't be messed with as the story is already perfect as it is. If they were to contradict this, then the AC wouldn't make any sense, when it is to be considered as the one that will close FF7's story in its entirety. But meh, let's just see how things would play out soon enough lol. If they were to change most major plot points in the story, then it would make more fans to stray away from FF7R.

I have some friends who I have made fun of for being on copium about this games story but I guess it would kind of make sense. Basically they say don't look at the remake in the title as literal, look at it as a play on words because of the theme of changing fate in the story. the game is called remake because Sephiroth is trying to remake the timeline not because its a remake of final fantasy 7 (which i'm certain they knew would be an issue). Still it is a slap in the face to the original in a multitude of ways. I am also one of those people who didn't necessarily need a 1 to 1 remake make of the original and was happy with the expansion of midgar that others saw as filler (i did ALL the side quests) but the 4rth wall breaking aspect of the characters really did ruin my expectations narrative wise. my only very minor gripe with gameplay was that there wasnt enough blue materia to use and also their wasnt any new green materia expanded upon from the original and yellow materia is basically useless until you play hardmode. I'm not excited for the "2nd" episodes story but I will buy it nonetheless, however if its story is a mess more than what was experienced in remake I wont buy the 3rd and 4th or any other episodes or expansions later because spirit of the game would be officially and maybe even canonically dead to me.

Even to an old player the story doesn’t make any sense. Also, they blew their wad way too quick with Sephiroth. Just throwing him in as much as possible doesn’t make it good. Sephiroth was a good villain because they did a slow burn and gradually showed us why he’s so terrifying. They just couldn’t help themselves in this game. They wanted Sephiroth NOW and you can tell. Instead of having the story gradually reveal him to us.
