Ойындар

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Japan sales have been revealed and while not the worst, I think it they clearly prove Square Enix needs to plan the franchise a bit better in the future.

Actually i think the major issue here is just that the traditional home console has been on the decline in japan overall. They more gravitate towards consoles that can be played on the go, like a switch. Nintendo basically has a tight grip on sales in japan atm. Its one of the main reasons a 8 year dated piece of hardware can outsell something newer and more advanced consistently. I do think if square ported rebirth over to whatever switch 2 will be, that particular version should do much better, even if concessions in quality are made, by the very nature of mobile gamings status in japan alone, aka the switch effect

To me there are a lot of factors, for 1 the move to make FF7 into a 3 game series was going to hurt this no matter what. One you have people that didn't like the direction of remake, 2 you have people that won't want to jump into a 2nd game in the series. Additionally limiting the series to just 1 system at launch was going to hurt it as well, even if it meant spending longer. I can't help but wonder if they money sony dished out for the at least timed exclusivity is worth pushing the series into such a niche spot. I would love to see the next final fantasy dialed back in budget like think about FF8 to FF9 where they did a bit of a return to a more classic style. I think what they are doing with the series is just going to kill it in the long run without some serious changes.

I think SE needs to stop with their obsession with killing god. 13, 14, 15, and I’m going to guess 16’s expanded stories all told stories about killing god. It takes away from their original stories and I don’t expect anything else than (good) sephiroth or genesis to step out of a portal and talk to cloud about needing to kill god in the third game. It’s played out, and their writing on it was never anything better than just good.

Remake released on PS4 which was more accessible and cost friendly due to being at the end of its life cycle but Rebirth is PS5 exclusive and considering the current inflation (that was not the case at release of Remake), not many people are willing to purchase a PS5 who would otherwise wait to play it on other systems. This means you have a pretty significant surge of demand for the game (especially among PC players) that is not being realized in sales since release.

I mean, the install base is lower, but it still amazes that Rebirth sold even less units compared to XVI

The PS4 had a userbase of just 3.75M when FF15 came out and still sold 2.75X better than Rebirth. Those players returned for Remake. FF16 lost half of those players and Rebirth lost 20% of those players. The problem is the PS5 software sales. They are abysmal for a system of that size of a userbase. When the PS4 was this old it was taking about half of the Top30 software charts... the PS5, despite more hardware, is lucky to get 5 games to chart and they fall off quickly.

This is the reason why I prefer Dragon Quest over Final Fantasy. The series has evolved into modern hardware. But they keep the series as formulaic as they can. The gameplay never once shipped from an turn based-combat into an action rpg with hack & slash mixed into it and the story, characters & worlds is as simple and easy to follow as you can imagine, while also has the compelling & charming moments. Dragon Quest didn't suffered an whole lot like Final Fantasy is going through and even by the quote on quote " golden age " era of what FF use to be, I still think DQ does alot of things better than FF has because it doesn't add an whole lot of gimmicks mixed in to make it so breakable and an very easy game.

There aint no way the game would even be able to run on switch, we can't say for certain with what switch 2 is going to be doing. If they're going to be in a similar route but begin to leverage DLSS or FSR in some compacity then there might be a chance but the trade off is going to be very ugly as they'd likely be forced to use older renditions of that solution.

The loss of unit sales is unavoidable when you create three-part series. Every time you create a series that picks up from prequels, you’re inherently hoping that players who beat the previous installment will return for the second part. The ceiling is always going to be lower with each sequel. So far, they’re all good games; but I’m having a hard time seeing why a trilogy was necessary for a Remake. They’re dragging out each section beyond what it ever needed to be, adding a ton of expendable mini-games, and increasing the time investment in each region via intel missions. The original alone had plenty of content, they could have trimmed a lot of fat and sold one all-encompassing game, and maybe later come out with an expansion or a remastered version. Furthermore, the PS5 isn’t doing too well in Japan to begin with. Nintendo has dominated the local market. Not only that though, but then Yen is down fairly significantly compared to the USD, so while PS5s are still fairly expensive in the West, their price point in Japan makes buying a PS5 console an unjustifiable expense for most working young adults. Perhaps Sony’s local reputation has declined as well, and people won’t be keen to support a console manufacturer that just laid off 8% of its global workforce, despite record-selling games.

And here I was thinking that this game would do way better than 16... It is indeed a franchise problem, together with a bit of the platform problem too. I agree that they should make a separate FF turn based for the Switch, and do away with the Sony exclusivity, at least for now, until Sony can straighten its business at least. These 2 moves are what Square Enix needs to start restoring FF pedigree as a juggernaut of gaming.

Crazy to me that we are at a point when Zelda and now Pikmin are bigger than Final Fantasy in Japan. Super Mario RPG a game that was once developed under Square opened bigger as a remake. I expected less sales following Remake but not this low. The final game whenever that releases will probably look even more dire. Might open to a sub-200k. Square in general have been mismanaged and squandering opportunities since the Switch launched. They hitched their horses to Sony for so long and it's clearly running out of steam in Japan. The only way that I could see them reversing this decline is for them to be fully on board Switch 2. They can't just throw out Asano games, old ports, and call it a day.

I hope Square-Enix, and by that I mean the Final Fantasy developing side of the company, fully commits in supporting the Switch's successor. But I'm not really sure what could they do, the Switch has been the first Nintendo home console, due to being a hybrid, in which S-E gave it more support, but while games like Octopath Traveller I & II, Bravely Default II, NEO The World Ends with You and Live-A-Live's remake have been amazing, not all of them became huge best-sellers nor they look like they push the Switch's hardware to its limits I'm not sure if Square could make a sort of Final Fantasy gaiden, kind of what Capcom did with Monster Hunter: Rise. If the Switch's successor rumors are true about it being at least as powerful as a PS4 Pro, that means that it could run a game like FF XV or VII Remake, but I really doubt that S-E would bother to develop such an ambitious title for a Nintendo console

I think it's a combination of things. Install base of hardware - Way more PS1/PS2/PS3/PS4 consoles than PS5. The cost of games - We may be seeing players pushing back against $60/70+ games. The economy - It may be that people are tight on funds due to the economy and can't afford to buy as many games. I do think Square Enix should deliver a FF7 Remake Trilogy to Nintendo Switch 2, for $50-$60 for the entire trilogy. It feels like Nintendo Switch gets the hand-me-downs from other consoles because of the difference in graphics quality, but I think that's a mistake in strategy. I think if Square Enix designed a FF9 Remake from the ground up for Nintendo Switch 2, with the same level of ambition as the FF7 Remake games but taking the Switch console limitations into consideration, that Square Enix would make bank. Then release it on PC and other consoles with a higher resolution mode or something.

The new story with the alternate universe, blowing their load on Sephiroth and making certain spoiler story beats overly obvious or just revealing too much too quickly have really turned off alot of fans for the original game.

So technically, the term that Nintendo hasn't had a mainline Final Fantasy since 1994 isn't really true anymore. The aforementioned games never were released on a Nintendo platform, so I think they count. The system also apparently is going to have DLSS. That may help tremendously. That's what it would take to get me back into Final Fantasy. I was a long time fan since the beginning of the franchise, but I fell out of love with the series in the past 5 years because of the gameplay changes. Choosing to change the gameplay genre felt like a slap in the face to a long time fan like me, when they could have evolved the gameplay into a better turnbased style. I know they're capable of it. PS5 really stumbled on their launch, so in my case, I got a steamdeck and upgraded my pc instead of getting a ps5. At this point, I'm not about to buy a ps5 even if I wanted to play the next FF game no matter how good it is. FF is not like Dragon Quest, a game series that always releases its titles on the most popular console in Japan, that's why Dragon Quest IX released on the DS, X on the Wii and why Enix decided to make two separate versions of XI, one for the PS4 and another for the 3DS Square could try to make a sort of Final Fantasy Gaiden game for the Switch or its successor, but very few Japanese third-party developers seem to open to the idea of making a big game for Nintendo, save for a few exceptions like CAPCOM's Monster Hunter: Rise from Capcom, Atlus' Shin Megami Tensei V and Platinum's Bayonetta 3. Thats because this hasnt been final fantasy since 10. Most of the original people are gone, with only one or two left from the 1999-2002 era. And they are more obsessed with action games and cinematics. You can't change the genre of a long running franchise and expect it to go over well with people. Then they falsely claim they "evolved" the combat. No they didnt. They switched from classic turn based format to the same style of action RPG format that has been around since before secret of mana. And so every game after 10 has felt more like a spin off at best. Granted, they handled the characters in Rebirth perfectly. The voice actors really step up and nail it with phenomenal performances all around. But then the rest of it seems like a cross between Kingdom Hearts and the Witcher, with WAY too many mandatory mini-games on the side. People wanted a modern FF7. This included staying true to the original formula and gameplay style/genre. And now they see that just isnt going to happen. Yeah, there are fan boys and girls that will defend it no matter what. Hell, cloud could wield a turd and they would trip over each other to defend it. But you would think they would have course corrected after the first couple of action RPGs pretending to be final fantasy went belly up and were quickly forgotten in bargain bins. I used to think they would come around....Now I think, if your a traditional fan don't hold your breath. Hey, at least we have Atlus around, who dethroned Square Enix as unchallenged kings of TRUE traditional JRPGs. But thats because they went with vision, instead of consumer sales charts.

Its Kingdom hearts wearing Final Fantasy skin, right down to the interdimensional/Multiverse BS. If it WAS a true Final Fantasy, it wouldnt be doing so poorly and being outsold by two traditional games (Persona 3 reload and Unicorn Overlord). THOSE are masterpieces....Why? Because they were crafted with vision. Not consumer charts that make them change the whole genre and format based on what generally sells better. Square was better by itself, and so was Enix. When they merged, they went corporate, and when they go corporate, profits come first and so they sit around having analyst meetings about what is popular, rather than building the game with the Final Fantasy fans in mind. 13 through 16 should have been HUGE red flags that they were going in the wrong direction. If people want an action RPG, they will go to the Witcher, or Souls games, or any one of the dozens and dozens on the pile. Sakaguchi basically made the top tier in the traditional RPG selections, and sat high on the throne, and really stood out as the undisputed kings of this genre. But when they side stepped all their OG fans and went changed the genre to action, they werent "special" anymore, but just another one on a very big heap. As a traditional JRPG there was no one who could even come close to challenging them. As an action franchise, they are just one of an oversaturated market of action titles. And its not like they couldn't have spruced up traditional gameplay. Atlus did it with the Persona series after all. And that game became a global phenomena. Even people who LIKE action games but are OG FF fans will feel "off" playing this or remake, even if they don't realize whats bugging them. And what is bugging them, consciously or unconsciously, is that this is NOT "FInal Fantasy" as they remembered and loved for decades. That is why they are failing.

Yes, but I think most Japanese developers don't take the Switch as a serious console to develop games for. The only major third-party Japanese games that released on Switch that managed to become huge or at least great sellers since the console launched were Monster Hunter: Rise, Momotaro Dentetsu, Shin Megami Tensei V and Bayonetta 3. Some developers admitted that they didn't think they Switch would've become that successful in Japan, and they have struggled to cultivate and audience on the system. That's why the major third-party releases have been late ports like NieR Automata, Persona 5 Royal or Ace Combat 7, while other games like Guilty Gear Strive, Persona 3 Reload or King of Fighters XV skipped the Switch. Though to be fair, one of the main issues with the Switch is its underpowered hardware, but very few developers have tried to make games that are tailored to its limitations In the case of Square-Enix, it's kind of unbelievable that they used to remake games like Final Fantasy III and IV in 3D for the DS, but haven't tried to make an original FF for the Switch. The closest thing we got were games like Bravely Default II and Octopath Traveller I & II, and while they looked great, I can't believe why they haven't tried to make something bigger like a full-fledge Final Fantast spin-off in the style of the PSOne games or FFX but for the Switch's hardware. In part I think it's due to budget and development issues and perhaps they don't think there's an audience for that type of game on the Switch, but there's not going to be an audience if you don't try to cultivate one I don't think things are going to change even if the Switch 2 manages to be significantly more powerful, there's always going to be some sort of excuse

@@pablocasas5906 Yeah, it’s sad to see that SE used to make games tailored to a weaker hardware like the DS and 3DS, yet, still make them look great and play great! However, Capcom is way worst in this regards as they made so, so many great and unique games since the GBA era, many which has turned into a big and beloved franchise like Ace Attorney for example. Capcom used to be very experimental and tried out loads of new ideas, especially on the portable titles, and a lot of those games look absolutely amazing, despite the console’s limitation like RE: Revelations (which I still think is the best version because of the 3D effect XD). But these days, it’s either AAA games for the most powerful hardware or just ports for the weaker ones. Just look at how they made a friggin’ SF4 as a launch title for the 3DS with its own unique gameplay features and some neat bonuses like the special camera angle mode that makes the 3D effect more immersive. Then what do we have for the Switch at launch, another SF2 for the hundredth time in order to “test out the waters”, a reason that they continued to use when it comes to making a game for the Switch for years to come. At the end, I think MH Rise was the only one game that Capcom made anew for the console, while the rest all all ports (correct me if I’m wrong). I know that the failure of the Wii U affected a lot of developers’ decision to pitch in on the Switch, but Capcom has been making games for Nintendo all this time and gave birth to so many legendary games on the Nintendo consoles, so it’s sad to see them quick to abandon Nintendo in the times of need, and even when the Switch has proven to be successful, they’re still reluctant to come back and instead plays it safe by pouring tons of ports instead.

The performance issues, story changes and outcry against action combat probably didn't help but a lot of people probably don't have the money to swing the PS5 adaption and might be waiting for a PC release. The other thing that I will agree with is that the general quality of FF has taken a lot of hits these past years so getting that good name back is a challenge. First of all oj is not wrong 100% on what he’s saying here. I’m going to point out real quick tho that when ff16 came out this guy made a video saying that the install base didn’t matter when it comes to ff16 sales, he also said it on his live stream countless of times. I just heard him admit finally that it DOES matter. Continuing on. Comparing ff situation with monster hunter is crazy really. Monster hunter and games like it appeals to basically everybody, the same is not true with a game like ff. Monster hunter is basically a perfect Gaas, while ff is just an rpg and the newer generation isnt really into RPGs that much like past generations. Kids nowadays want to play action oriented games like Gaas and shooters. Last I’ve said for a long time that oj is a Nintendo fanboy, the biggest Nintendo fanboy on KZread and this video confirms that he’s not ok with SE excluding the switch. He thinks that releasing the game on the switch would automatically sell millions when in reality the switch has gotten great RPGs over the years and they have sold less that 2million copies consistently and According to oj ff16 selling over 3mil copies it’s first week wasn’t good so selling less than 2mil on the switch he would probably consider that atrocious no? lol Ps: I’ve been playing ff7 rebirth at work with my portal and the feeling is just incredible so I would 100% for a switch 2 version of ff7 to release for it. I would buy it day one just like I’m going to buy the switch. I would be incredible to be playing ff7 on the go, not only at work but anywhere. Make it happen Nintendo. you do know, they put them on sony first due to the money sony pays up, right? its also cheaper to make and optimize a game for a single console first. finally, they took less than 4 years to make rebirth, which means, it also cost ALOT LESS to make than remake. maybe even less than xvi. finally japanese sales are no real indicators, since japan is a weird market for games, due to both an economy in shambles, but also their focus on digital only/portable devices. these sales figures are just for physical sales. they dont account for the real number. specially, as i said before, the market is moving to digital sales more and more. which results in less "traditional copies" being sold as a result. the ps5 also has a digital only model that is cheaper and slightly smaller. those are 2 aspects that the japanese market is looking more interested in.

And will take a long time, if ever, to go to other platforms. So why not develop an additional (new, compelling) game, to engage fans on Switch (and other) platforms? I find it very interesting that Square-Enix hasn't tried to cultivate an audience for Final Fantasy games on the Switch. I mean, they did eventually ported most of their back catalogue in the form of ports of games like VII, VIII IX, X and X-2, XII and the Pixel Remasters from I-VI, with the XIII Trilogy and and XV being absent, but that's because the Switch probably can't run those games (though I've heard S-E tried too port XV but the Switch was unable to handle the Luminous Engine so they just ported the Pocket Edition) and they also released Crisis Core on the Switch. But in the end they're very old ports and remasters, and while it's nice that various Nintendo players are not able to experience those games, Square-Enix seems to be very opposed to the idea of making an orginal FF game for the system or even a spin-off, which is weird since the DS got a remake of III and IV made in 3D and also The 4 Heroes of Life on the same system. The closest thing to a Final Fantasy game tailored to the Nintendo Switch are Bravely Default II and the Octopath Traveller games, but it sometimes feel like S-E, and other Japanese developers, are afraid of bringing some of their biggest franchises on the Switch due to some sort of loyalty to Sony or perhaps they don't want to dilute the brand's name by making a game for and underpowered console I could also argue that Square-Enix also didn't bring as many Dragon Quest games to the Switch compared to the titles released on the DS and 3DS, instead making some spin-off titles a major late port and porting the mobile versions of Dragon Quest I to III (I know there's a DQIII HD-2D remake on the works but we haven't heard much about it since its announcement). And how could we forget that Kingdom Hearts I, II and 3D got released as Cloud games alongside III (I know that KH III can't not run at all on the Switch but I'm sure the other 3 games could

@@pablocasas5906 Great points Pablo. I think part of the issue is that Square Enix can only do so much at one time. Stated another way, the “opportunity cost” of doing interesting new games like Triangle Strategy, the Octopath games and the Bravely games might mean less (or no) resources available for a Final Fantasy “gaiden” if you will. I think another factor is the tendency of some developers to pursue their vision at all costs - sometimes even at the cost of market viability. From what I heard, the first 2 games in the new FF7 trilogy really are something special. But it can be a hard sell, locked to a single platform, rewriting the original narrative, moving to real-time combat….. and spacing the releases over so many years. It’s just a lot to ask of your audience, especially when there are many other gaming options available.

In my humble opinion, the reason for this decline might be multifactorial in nature. I mean, I don't wanna preempt anything because it is still a bit early to judge since we haven't got the figures for from digital and from outside Japan. But if this continues, I think it is because there is a shift in playerbase, I suppose. I mean it's not a secret that there are dissatisfied hardcore fans who wants to maintain FF as a turn-based JRPG. I myself am a little bit 50/50 in this shift ever since they made that jump to action RPG like FFXV. Nevertheless, I still like those. Also, despite the aggressive marketing, if these are the figures across the board, including those from outside Japan, then Square should rethink about what FF should be in the future like will they continue the action game route or switch back to turn-based RPGs...well either will be a tough decision. I think Square should also open up to the idea to launch games on different consoles on launch and not just on one platform. In any case, I hope Square can still bounce back since despite being more action-oriented, FF is still a top-tier caliber game series.

It's not unexpected. It did sell well, topping charts, but much less than Remake. There's a lot of reasons for this. Remake sold near the tail end of the PS4 release cycle. there's far fewer PS5 customers. Direct sequels almost never sell as well as the games they're following. Remake's Whispers plotline, and timeline shenanigans, split the fan base, so there's even fewer players who will come back for the second one. And Remake also sold during the pandemic, which saw more games being sold in general. The folks at Square Enix are smart cookies. I'm sure they expected a drop in sales compared to Remake, but they're still making plenty of money. The lesson to be learned here is probably "Develop for cross platform if you want better sales" as well as "don't divide the fan base with controversial plot handling" and lastly "be wary of splitting plots across multiple games, due to the nature of sequels and how they tend to sell less than the games they follow."

Final Fantasy should be more cross platform; and I know the resent ones are too advanced to run on Switch; though hopefully the next gen Nintendo console could change that. But if the new IPs want to continue being a success, there should be future Final Fantasy games on there.

Don't think Nintendo's next console will be able to run Rebirth, at most it'd be able to somewhat run Remake, or just like what happened with the Kingdom Hearts games Square-Enix will just make some cloud (no pun intended) versions of both Remake and Rebirth S-E could have tried to build an audience for FF games on Nintendo consoles, but their only efforts have been late ports of old FF games, the Pixel Remasters and a bunch of spin-offs like the Crisis Core and Crystal Chronicles remasters and the panned Chocobo GP game I really doubt S-E considered making a FF game tailored to the Switch's hardware limitations. The closest thing we got were some tiltes inspired on the classic FF games, I'm talking about Octopath Traveller I & II and Bravely Default II which, while good games on their own right, somehow feel like S-E is unsure or doesn't want to devalue the FF brand name by developing an original FF game for an underpowered console like the Switch

I think they Switch's successor maybe able to run FFVII Remake, perhaps with some sacrifices, but I don't know if it'll be able to run Rebirth, unless some developer compresses the game's files and does some tech wizardry, kind of like the way some developers manage to run games like Doom and Doom Eternal, NieR: Automata and Hogwart's Legacy on Switch. Maybe those ports aren't the ideal way to play some of those games, but some users don't mind to play and inferior version if they the Switch's the only console they own The main problem is that Square-Enix made some sort of exclusivity deal with Sony so we're not so sure when, or if, the games would release on other consoles. I think it's more likely that S-E makes some sort of Pocket Edition for VII Remake and Rebirth akin to what they did with XV. But I also believe that S-E will port the entire FFXIII Trilogy and XV on Nintendo's next console

The fact that they offered Remake for free, has had people thinking, if i wait for part 3, ill get all of it for $69.99... I still bought it, having bought Remake in 2020, but i can guarantee a lot of people thought to wait was a better option. I am still loving Rebirth though. I am 35 hours in on Chapter 8, finally getting to the Gold Saucer.

The mere fact a niche and extremely small series like Trials of Mana racked up a 1 million+ sales number goes to show that action based combat is accepted and welcomed, so it isn't like people are boycotting because of the high action based combat. I think it ultimately comes down to (a) the PS5 so far having smaller install base than ps4; and (b) players (newer?) who picked up the first Remake game and decided the game wasn't for them and passed on Rebirth. Either way, numbers will still pick up and still healthy nonethless. Nothing to be worried about. 7 is still the holy grail when it comes to Square and the FF series.

I think it has more to do with the decline sales of the PS5, because not only did rebirth not sell very well at launch. it also didn't move an hardware sells as the Switch outsold it. Not to mention most of Sony exclusive games are also coming to PC, so that could also factor into the lack of sales for PS5.

I personally believe that the timed exclusivity thing is a mistake, too. For one thing, it limits the audience from growth. The Rebirth/Remake games have, in all fairness, been only timed exclusives, but I personally believe that putting them on Switch 2 (and the other FF games) is what REALLY needs to happen. After all, where are the audiences who love these kind of games playing on in Japan? That's right, Switch. Many third party publishers got the message and are on board for Switch 2. SquareEnix probably is, but where the Final Fantasy branch is concerned, I think it REALLY needs to make the jump to Switch 2. We already saw traces of it returning with the arrival of 7-12 & 15 (minus 11, 13 & 14). No reason why it shouldn't continue on Switch 2. It ultimately depends on whether Switch 2 can handle them, but either way, I feel like the exclusivity days are numbered. I also don't see this trilogy staying exclusive.

The thing about games sales in Japan, Look at the switch games in the top 10, it literally it just Nintendo exclusives on switch selling. The switch 3rd party games are not really selling well. The Japanese market is just weird. 3rd party games sold better on PS4 than switch. if you are not Nintendo, I think its a hopeless market tbh. Rip KH4 sales in jp.

I think the main issue with third-party games not selling that well on Switch is the fact that those developers are not bringing their best efforts to the console, most of the Switch third-party games are old ports from previous generations or smaller titles, like licensed titles. The only third-party Switch games that have managed to sell over a million units in Japan are Minecraft, Momotaro Dentetsu and Monster Hunter: Rise Back in the Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, Wii and 3DS days many third-party developers would make unique games that were tailored to Nintendo's systems limitations, but since the Switch is and HD system and it success took many developers by surprise, there's been very few original games made with the Switch's limitations in mind, which is unbelievable considering the Switch has become the best-selling console in Japan Perhaps thing will change with the Switch's successor, but I think many Japanese third-parties have failed in cultivating an audience for their games on Nintendo consoles

A few things: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth in it's released form would not be possible on Switch. An Xbox version would sell maybe another 2000 copies in Japan (Final Fantasy XV sold 3000 copies on xbox one at release in Japan). PC port would be the only real option here but we also know, how badly optimized many Square Enix Games are for PC, which would influence the discussions about this game in a big way. We also have to talk about changes in marketing. I live in South Korea and 7 Remake as well as XV got super big marketing campaigns everywhere on the streets. Add a declining economy in Japan + Remake came out when everyone was home because of covid + price raise for Rebirth compared to remake and you can see, that there might not be that one big issue but a combination of things.

10:33 I want a classic experience again alright, but that has nothing to do with turn based combat. I don't hate it, but I don't miss it either. The make or break classic part I want back is the old stylized, nowhere near realistic art direction. The FF series didn't lose me for dropping the turns, it lost me for looking more and more like the generic realism western devs already give me too much of. If the FFVII remakes had updated the horribly dated technical aspects of the visuals while keeping the original art direction and stylized intent, (you know, what Dragon Quest and Mario games have done over the years for example,) I'd actually have been interested. Extremely interested. Without the original visual style though, they're FFVII in name only as far as I'm concerned, and the name itself isn't where my nostalgia lives. FF games won't be system sellers to me or even day one purchases again until they LOOK like FF games again.

All of my friends who played FF7 on PS1 at launch with me are older and prefer waiting for PC. I'm the only person I know IRL who paid for this game at launch. It's great, I love it, but I have to admit resenting the 4k mode. It sucks to see a game this good suffer poor sales, because this is going to mark the beginning of the end of seeing high end games like this. People are seeing that rent today is double the price of mortage 5 years ago, so something to consider before pumping so much money into high budget projects. It doesn't help that sequels always have a larger mountain to climb on sales charts. Now I know you are saying people care more about physical sales in Japan; however, do we know if Sony offered the same digital pre-order deal we got here in the US? Digital pre-orders of FF7Rebirth got FF7Remake for free on PS5. If I didn't already have FF7Remake physically, then I'd have probably gone for that digital deal.

The problem is they allow Sony to keep them console exclusive with these Final Fantasy games. PS5, Xbox Series S & X, and the PC all have very common hardware and there really is very little reason for it to be release on all of these platforms simultaneously. I think SE isn't going to be hurting as far as money flow since Sony is paying them handsomely, but it could be deterimental to future brand recognition.

Well deserved fall. First, they sell only to ps. That slashes their potential customer base. Second, they divided a single rpg story into 3 parts that span years. Not many people want to pick up a game that they know wont be finished until a few years later. Third, the loss of some of the hardcore fans of the original story, like me, because of their dumb changes and added timelines, further slashes their already small customer base. They were obviously asking to fail.
