Filzfabrik Wurzen - The Rebirth of the Weickert Hammerhead Felt

Ғылым және технология

Filzfabrik Wurzen GmbH (FFW) is the oldest felt mill in the world today and is the successor company to the once famous J.D.Weickert Piano Forte Felt Factory which was known for its legendary 'Weickert' hammer felt from 1848 until 1945.
After World War II, the company was put under state ownership and slowly lost its leadership position in hammer felt.
In 1991, after German reunification, the company was re-privatized by the Brand family. Due to strong demand for better sounding hammers in the German piano industry at the time, FFW reintroduced the old 'Weickert' hammer felt method of production. The result was the creation of a more elastic and stable felt that offers the piano technician a much wider dynamic range of tone as well as less maintenance.
Only through the good cooperation between the felt maker, hammerhead maker, piano manufacturer, and voicer‎ is it possible to get optimal tonal results. The felt is the basis for success, but the hammerhead making method and voicing technique by the piano maker‎ are equally important. This video shows such cooperation among the companies FFW (felt maker), Louis Renner (hammerhead maker), and Steingraeber & Soehne (piano manufacturer). The hammerhead felt quality shown here is FFW's 'Weickert Special', its latest product.

This well-produced video makes me feel grateful to be a concert piano technician who gets to work with pianos, hammers and people who love to make, play and work on them!

I Always used Wurzen felt on the hammers I install or replace, (made by Renner mostly they use almost exclusively Wurzen filtz, different types) it is good to see how you allowed the quality to evolve toward perfection, since the 90" and yes the main thing, is to keep elasticity in time. The late "Weickert special, is really to my liking . "Weickert" was the name of the old factory at Wurzen, it was yet the first grade felt widely used in Europe by most good piano makers, and also by the shops that did "re felting" of worn hammers. I have seen that stamped on the side of some old hammer heads : "Weickert special"

Had my hammers replaced by Renner and Dotzek (Rosenheim) with this hammerfelt on my Feurich 227 (had it done also around 2000, then with "normal" felts). This time the change is dramatic. Never had such a brilliance in the diskant, rave-black bass and tremendous dynamic expansion. The "toucher" has changed also in that it is faster and gives a sensation of "feeling" the hammer, since it returns more dynamically. Geil.
