Excellent review. I wash waxed cotton on a cold wash without washing powder to get the grime out, and then re-wax it after it has dried. Always support local production, but Filson are a good company and provide excellent customer care for many years after having bought one of their products.

Thank you for the kind words friend. Since making this video I discovered a company called Prison Blues. It’s USA made workwear made by prisoners out in Oregon, they have a program to give inmates work skills for when they are released. Their stuff is affordable and super tough.

I've wore these pants 5 days a week for three months now. I'm a hardwood lumber inspector by trade and I'm very hard on pants. So far, I would recommend them. It is disappointing that they are no longer made in America. Also, the warranty is not the same. They will still repair them for free but not replace them. Definitely not the most comfortable pair of pants. I would wear a base layer underneath . For those of you worried about the cleanliness not being able to wash them, they don't stink at all. I think the wax prevents the fabric from absorbing anything. I once laid in a parking lot changing a tire in the rain and did not get wet.

@@evergreenorganics I'm definitely going to check out Red Clouds. I moved to Portland 3 years ago but I've never heard of them. I do prefer the slash front pockets and the option of suspenders on Filson. All the extra pockets on RC is nice and made in America is important. Filson has been bought out couple times and the new owners don't seem to share the original vision.

I'm a logger in Washington, I wear tins all winter as rain gear. These are tough but I have shredded a pair before. I wish these were made in America too but what I love about filson is they'll fix em when they do get ripped. For the price of 180$ at my local saw shop and them being almost completely double layered vs 300$ for those red clouds that look like a waxed version of Carhartts I'll take filson plus I doubt red cloud will pay for shipping and fix them for you for free when you rip em.

I totally agree with you. I’m not sure about this but I have heard that Filson changed their repair policy. I’ll have to look into that. I’ll post a review on the Red Clouds pants soon. They’re extremely high quality but the cut is like a skinny jean almost. Not ideal for working in the woods bending over constantly. They also don’t have bachelor buttons which isn’t the end of the world to have to put them on but for that price point it should be an option. I’ve been in contact with the Prison Blues factory and I’m hoping they will start making waxed canvas pants. Their stuff is awesome.

@@evergreenorganics prison blues is good stuff id give their waxed britches a go for sure. As for filson s repair policy, I had a pair I got last winter as a back up that got snagged on a maple limb and a tear pretty much from where they drop to just a single layer all the way to the bottom. Filson repaired them free of charge but the repair was capped with a new hem, I can't have a hem for safety reasons. I told them that, they sent me a new shipping label are expediting a new repair that doesn't need a hem or they'll replace them and are on the way back there as we speak. Their customer service is really good.

So they do not breath at all. I would not recommend wearing them in temps above 50 degrees. I also always wear wool long johns under them as the waxed canvas is not the most pleasant feeling against bare skin. I wear these from fall until the temps rise up in spring.

That’s my biggest gripe about the red clouds pants, too slim. I made this video quite a while ago but I soon found out that I reach for the Filson tin pants every time between the two. Also my suspender buttons fell out so I reached out to Filson and they are repairing them for free including shipping to and from their facility. Pretty cool of them to do that.

I hear their repair policy is pretty solid and the customer is still kept in mind. As long as you’re not taking a blade or pliers to these things with the intent of destroying them, Filson stands by their products. Unlike some other American companies with factories overseas I know. (Stetson..) I look forward to getting mine in the mail in the coming days. I wear the short cruiser nowadays layered over a wool sweater in the winter of Colorado and it’s better than any Patagonia puffy coat or whatever fancy fabric Coloradan men wear these days.

I bought the journeyman on a trip to DC at one of their stores. I wore it one time. ONE TIME. I tried to return it immediately after because the straps did not fit comfortably for long-term wear. I told Filson that I had worn the item. I was very clear about the situation. I sent the bag back. They sent it back to me saying it was not saleable because it was worn. Yeah I told them that. I contacted customer service again because I can't beleive that a $500 bag isn't returnable after 1 use. I was denied again. They say it's their 'policy'. WTF kinda policy is that? They don't care at all about customer satisfactions. So yes I have a very expensive, cool looking, uncomfotable bag that I can't travel with as planned. I will never spend money with them again.
