I was completly green when I walked on set and got to 1st AC for an indie film. I came from a 3D animation background with a personal interest in filmmaking. Everything I had learned about cinematography was from YT channels like Film Roit, Indy Mogul, StudioBinder, DSLR Guides, Rob Ellis and a few film classes in college. My DP was an experienced and extremely patient guy who taught me everything I needed to know about 1st and 2nd AC, Gripping, DIT, and how to conduct yourself on set. This video really does hit home because it's so true. Thank you Film Riot!

Wow I am the same boat right now, I studied computer animation years ago but really want to be an AC on set, Im going to keep watching YT videos to learn, but also, how do you apply to become an AC? And do they need you to be experienced to hire you? Or do you have to start off as a PA on all sets?

@@GABYFILMSStaffmeup is a great sight for getting gigs. You'd probably want to aim for Camera PA, or 2nd AC first. Sometimes you just gotta plug your nose and jump tho. That's exactly where I'm at, as I just got put on as 1st AC. Never technically done it before, and I got about 4 weeks to study and figure it out. Reminds me of a quote Will Smith said once. "Greatness exists on the other side of fear".

Thank you for making something entertaining and easy to digest it really helps. I've never been an A student before and it's really all thanks to you.

The only advice I can give you is stop wasting your time at full sail and go get on a real film/tv set asap because that's where you're going to learn most of your knowledge anyway. Either that or work at a camera rental house. The money that your using to pay for your school you can be buying gear instead and using said gear to advertise yourself in order to get booked on jobs. Just my two cents, I went to film school too and didn't come to this realization until after I graduated. Best of luck 👍

Enjoy seeing ACs get some love on your channel. Andrew hammered home the importance of focus pulling and it's imperfections that require improvisation and precision of the AC to nail that focus every time. For aspiring ACs-- don't be misguided by tech with simple A and B functions that pulls for you **cough cough** it has it's time and place but you need to commit to the craft and practice to be the best, no exception.

One time I was a 1st AC on a short film (actually you guys highlighted it a while ago. Short horror film called The Recipients) I had to pull on a long one take shot, on an old Russian anamorphic lens, at T1.5. Talent was told to improvise. All I had was a first position marker. HARDEST. PULL. OF. MY. LIFE.

Having a good 1st AC is so crucial especially as sets get bigger and more needs to be managed because they will help the DP out in so many ways. I have two first AC's that I work with that are great and understand how I shoot and work so that in case one isn't available I can use the other and on bigger projects that I get hired for I always ensure that I can bring one of them on because its what has helped me get through so many scenarios

The follow focus seemed decent, on the other hand I really like the design of the video transmitter be able to be attached to v-mount, but correct me if I'm wrong it wouldn't be suitable for pulling focus correct? I looked at some reviews and it looks like the latency is way too delayed to reliably pull focus on faster moving scenes.

I had purchased the Came TV focus but for me it didn't take long before it lost connection even with line of sight. Did yours have this problem at all? I liked the price point but 20 feet away and connection wasn't so good. I finally just pulled for the Nucleus M which goes through walls! Cause my AC isn't always next to me or have their own monitor. And I assume that transmitter is just for video like Hollyland and Teradeck correct it doesn't help improve the range of the follow focus.

I have hollyland Mars 400s which has slight latency really have to pick the best channel to get lowest latency & then there is Teradek which is industry standard with very low latency. There was a lot of good information here, but there was also so much jargon used in this lesson that I don’t truthfully feel it could be labeled as “101.” Perhaps “301” or "401” would be better. It would have been oh so helpful if a few pop-ups came on screen to help define what your guests were referring to in their comments instead of just pictures of people we don’t know. I don’t think it should be assumed that everyone is familiar with the filmmakers’ in-house terminology in a “101” tutorial.
