    Ren has an amazing BTS video for this. There is 1 cut, when they pass behind the wheelchair. It was needed to move the lapel mic to the tie (and waterproof it). Also, Ren only had the 1 suit. From the time you see the strings it was not only a 1 take video... it was only 1 take because they didn't have time to dry the suit and the set to do it again. He called the violin player on the left a legend because the water malfunctioned a bit and ended up getter her wet but she barely flinched and didn't move. They had to replace the strings on her bow but she stuck it out. Violins are expensive so the fact she sat there, not knowing how wet she was going to get... true class.

    There's also a good place when he removed the hood. They only had 1 day to film, I wonder if they added those possibilities just in case.. but according to Ren and Samuel they only cut behind the chair - Sam said the globe spinning was an amazing fluke... it stopped at exactly the right time and landed on Cuba@@mrrydogg

But you are absolutely factually wrong. Camerimage is one of the most prestigious festivals in the world, it's just specialised, as it focuses strictly on cinematography, not on films, acting, directing, screenwriting and all the rest. It is for film professionals, not for general public. And professionals absolutely do take notice of what's happening there. For Sam to be nominated for Camerimage best music video award with an absolutely independent, ridiculously low budget video of Hi Ren absolutely speaks volumes and is huuuuge kudos. And I can bet you dollars against nuts that he has now been noticed all over the world in the professional circles.

  • @markwilson7013

    @markwilson7013

    @@thomasgoldschmidt298 The bag cut was because Ren's head was a sweaty mess and it took more than a few hand strokes to sort his hair out 😅 It also took the pressure off Ren a little with the piano playing at the beginning in case he made a mistake later so he didn't have to do the piano again as that's on the edge of his ability. I don't think they cut on the rotation, though it would have been an opportunity if needed. Boosting the brightness would probably confirm.😀

    I love how you got sucked in and stopped analyzing the visuals for a while there. :) There is actually *one* cut, aroung 9:54 when the camera goes behind the wheelchair. They had to move the lapel mic from the jacket to his tie. And speaking of one shots, after this cut they only had one chance to nail the final part, because they only had one suit, and they didn't have time to let the floor dry once they had started the rain. Also, the viola player got water on her bow (you see her moving it around 12:49), so she would have had problems playing after that. Still great of her to stay as still as she did, so that she didn't ruin the shot!

    Your reaction has been one of the best I've seen to MG3. Thank you. You are very correct that a lot of the virtuosity in Ren's videos comes from the fact that he has a small and intimate crew of well-trusted people as devoted to their film craft as Ren is to his musical craft. Sam Perry-Falvey is insanely gifted as his videos with other musicians shows. With Ren in the mix, he glows. The one cut in this video--in the first pass behind Ren's wheelchair happened because they had a deadline for shooting and Ren had only one suit, so once the sprinklers went on, they wouldn't be able to reset. That fact is insane and speaks to the skill of cameraman Bo, lighting man Josh, and Sam and Ren, themselves. If you want to know more about the video, check out Wolf Johnson's BTS video. It has some interesting information.

    It was not as lean a production as the original Money Game video (£500) which was totally DIY. Ren said that the cost for this video was in the £25K-£30K range but both he and the cinematographer said it should have cost 2 or 3 times that amount. You should also check out the original Money Game video which is also a one-take. It was released 4 years ago.

    Obviously Ren is a talent the likes of which no one has seen before (certainly in the arts), but I'm surprised there is so little (or any) recognition for Samuel Perry-Falvey here. Sam is Ren's good friend, and the filmographer behind most of Ren's best one-take videos. In fact it was your Hi Ren reaction that Sam commented on, where I learned the particulars of Hi Ren being not quite a one-take. See Ren's interview with Black Pegasus when Sam pops in (in Canada no less). They also filmed Ren's 'For Joe' performance during Sam's visit. Anyway, Sam is a great talent and also seems a great guy, given he and Ren's close relationship. Shout out to Sam. Oh, and this video was all planned while Ren was in Canada for treatments. He took time off and went home to film this. Crazy ambition and determination.

    Absolutely loved your insights, I actually watched your video twice already to catch what you had to say again. So many things beautifully spot on: - The small crew, comprised of a lot of long term friends that all have a trusting working relationship that allows for collaborative thinking - The authenticity that Ren strives for, shown in the long one-shots and even the practical effects of the spinning gimbal - The use of negative space both visually and sonically to give the audience the space to breathe and absorb--Ren's studio production leans into this concept a lot as well, and I saw a comment once that asked, "Why did you bother to load more than one bullet?" and Ren responded, "To build tension.” (There's also a camera cutaway disguising a bit of sleight-of-hand that's happening with the clips at that moment.) - The specificity of storytelling breaching into the Universal (have you seen the Tales of Jenny and Screetch--Full Version yet? Talk about mastery in simplicity and specificity of storytelling... well worth the watch) - And the trancendence of art into the spiritual, and how Ren genuinely seems to inspire that reaction with some of his pieces, tapping into places of true emotion for the viewer/listener It might feel like a bit of a backslide after watching this one, but the video for Money Game Part 1 is equally impressive, especially when taken in context of guerilla filming with practically no budget and (I think) 5 people total on set, including Ren and Romain (could be wrong on that number). There are visual cues in the MG3 video that are actual direct references to the lyrics in MG1 ("point the mirror at ourselves", ”rain, rain, rain, rain, a storm it comes our way", "finger on the trigger of a money game") that it might be worth a watch as well? Money Game 2 is a lyric video so not much for you to break down, but so worth the listen if you liked the message on MG3! And last bit in this egregiously long comment 😅: I'll have to look up the author you mentioned, they seem to be someone that people who like Ren would get something out of reading. Thanks again for your analysis!

    @@jonathanhiller_ While this one wasn't a "one take" I believe the term is a "one shot" (which has clever cuts in it to make it feel like a single take) Money Game Part 1 is a true one shot video like Hi Ren. MG1 took 170+ takes before they got it just right. Another "one shot" video of his It Murderer which follows him from the roof of an apartment complex into the flat down to the street and into the car and then they take a drive. Sam deserves much credit for this as mentioned below. His filming ideas and techniques have seen him shortlisted at a couple of music video awards in Europe of late (Hi Ren) and I think he was commended in one of them. Ren practiced the Edvard Greig piece he played at the start as he was scared of making a mistake. He got a chap named Charlie to translate the music to the piano and play it. Next watch you do of this, check out the globe; it stopped spinning on South America in a serendipitous fashion since that was the topic of the song in that moment!! There was the one cut. when the camera goes behind the wheelchair and goes black. If you notice is is black for a fraction too long ie, the chair appears "wider" than it would be in real life. I must say, I had visions of Mr. Baldwin when he began waving the gun, but it was a decommissioned one and he also swapped out the bullets off screen with a slight of hand. There is a "Making of Money Game 3 video filmed by Wolf Johnson you can find on Ren's channel. Also Knox Hill interviewed Samuel Perry-Falvey about filming this video. I enjoyed hearing your take on this. I also loved the editing saying you mentioned.

The scenes in the background dont go away though and when he gets paralyzed, the attendant places him so that hes facing backwards for the first time, essentially forced to see his past and the things hes done. I think there's two cuts in this, but they're done so well you can't tell. Ren, Sam, and their team are absolutely phenomenally amazing

    Cinematically, I think Money Game Part 3 has to be one of my favorite music videos of all time. It's absolutely STUNNING. Ren's performance in the song makes me think he's the lead actor in a Broadway musical every time I watch it too. It's in my top 3 of Ren's videos.

    There is just one cut in the video which happens when the camera moves behind the back of the wheelchair before swinging out to reveal the string musicians.

    Your reactions are always the ones I look forward to and always worth waiting for. I'm glad that you don't jump as soon as videos are released as it could very well get swamped amongst the other reactors and missed. The way you break down not only the song but the visuals plays power into what is already a masterpiece and makes it more so by having the understanding and insight that you provide as a filmmaker. Great works as always, keep it up!

    In 3 days, it will be the 1 year anniversary of when Hi Ren premiered. It currently has over 22 million views. I think it would be really cool for all of the reactors/people to make a video for Ren, telling him what an impact he has had on us all this past year. He's changed lives.
