    Thank you very much for this comparisonl! I decided to get the Cinema P3. I have the iPhone XS Max and it doesn't record in 10-bit, however in Cinema P3 there is an option called "HLG P3 8-bit" which supposedly increases the dynamic range of the video. However, if I use this option it doesn't allow me to use a Log profile. I would like to know, if I want to color grade later in post, which option is better? P3 with Log A or HLG P3 without Log profile? Which one will give me more dynamic range and color correction freedom in post? Thanks a lot!

    @@iphoneographers In Cinema P3 Pro Camera, you can use B-Log, C-Log or D-Log with ProRes. I would recommend using the 10-bit HLG Video Codec and choose either C-Log or D-Log. This will ensure you capture the High Dynamic Range and Wide Color (Rec.2020) output from the camera. You can then convert to SDR or HDR using the LUTs provided within the App in your favorite editor. If you use B-Log, you get the convenience of BT.709 for SDR workflows, but the dynamic range and color gamut is reduced to SDR BT.709.

  • @iphoneographers

    @iphoneographers

    Жыл бұрын

    You can’t increase dynamic range as it is what it is - but you can increase what you see of it shooting log. Especially in the shadows and mid tones. So in other words, if you shot in a standard baked in look the shadows would be more contrasty, and in some cases crushed versus shooting log (where you see more of the DR).

I have the free version of Resolve. I've tried many options from several forums but, none seem to work so far. You are referring to DNG image sequences that are placed in a file? You need to drag-n-drop or import the folder into Media Pool and then you can add it to the time-line. I wasn't aware that iPhones can record DNG image sequences. The file size would be much larger than ProRes.

    @Sir-Kay

    Жыл бұрын

    @@iphoneographers I've tried Snapseed as it's free, yes it take DNG RAW still photos and I can import it now but, it's not the same RAW image anymore. See, when I open a RAW imagine on my MAC unedited, I can see very sharp image and of course it says DNG, but after editing on 3rd party Apps like Snapseed/Lightroom etc, it exports it in png or Jpeg and it's no longer the crisp image any more. It's still good but, just not as good as straight out of the Iphone. I guess you don't have that issue as DNG/RAW are Adobe compatible so, you won't have issues with compatibility in your adobe Premier Pro video editor.

  • @iphoneographers

    @iphoneographers

    Check your export settings. You may be compressing them too much or shrinking the file size. You don’t use a raw file after editing - you export it as a PNG or JPEG or TIFF, etc. - then import that into Resolve.

    For me one really important point to mention is that cinema P3 does not collect ANY of your data (at least according to the app store) whereas filmic pro is equivalent to a random guy sitting in your bedroom’s corner writing down everything you do, and selling all that info to other people who find ways to monetise it. For me, an app that spies on you is an absolute dealbreaker.

HLG does not only provide more leeway in the highlights, but it is the only cross-camera profile that is vendor-independent. That means, I can use the same grading for all my footage across cameras with only minor adjustments for color matching. And, it renders 3 times faster in Davinci Resolve compared to Log-footage.

    @@blackburnapps5276 so HLG basically? That's still display-referred and not intended for grading although with some proper color management can be handled and at least has a much bigger gamut. Sharpening and noise reduction still cannot be turned off, though?

  • @iphoneographers

    @iphoneographers

    Жыл бұрын

    That’s not accurate. These are both true logarithmic curves. There are some apps that do what you’re saying though. Understand though, this is not like S Log3 on Sony or C Log on Canon, especially in regards to highlight recovery as you’re limited by the sensor and the DR it captures. But it’s pretty good for a phone. :) Unfortunately though Apple does not let developers bypass the in-camera sharpening or the tone mapping. One day maybe as you can do that on some Android.

  • @blackburnapps5276

    @blackburnapps5276

    Жыл бұрын

    @@DennisSchmitz HLG is scene-referred. The HLG transfer function is 50% Gamma and 50% Log. With C-Log and D-Log, the HLG is converted to a Log transfer function. This reduces the amount of data stored in highlights, increases the amount of data stored in shadows and produces a much more even amount of data storage across the dynamic range (per stop). The benefit is more detail / less noise in shadows (due to less video compression artefacts), and more chroma data is stored in shadows allowing for better color saturation when color grading. Sharpening and noise reduction cannot be turned off unfortunately. This is a limitation in iOS.
