Film Scoring in GARAGEBAND?!

Film Scoring in GARAGEBAND?! Are you mad Guy? Maybe - but I wanted to find out if it's possible to write proper music to picture in Apple's free music programme. Just using the built-in free sounds, I'm going to score a short sequence and show you how to write to picture, how to create the right mood and choose the best instruments - all in a completely free music programme.
Why not have a go yourself?

This is great, I have a huge amount of respect for Garage Band as a product. I've recorded entire EPs on it - and on an even more stripped back version as I was on an Ipad 2 (using an Alesis Ipad Dock)! It's also a great tool for DAW education, because it strips so much stuff down to just what is necessary. I'm also a huge fan of their virtual drummers (as a drummer myself) as they make it incredibly easy to customize drum beats without having to map everything out in the piano roll.

Same here. I use IOS garage band on an iPad constantly for demos/ideas etc. I also use it for live backing tracks on a touring gig. Using the Live Loops to record basic drum/bass tracks for each section of a song, and then pair it with an AirTurn 6 button Bluetooth switcher - and it does everything I need it to with no need for a laptop/interface! It’s an invaluable tool for when I want to make something but am sick of being in front of the computer. Sometimes I can’t believe it’s free.

@@HansAlbers10000 it was a bit of a process to figure out since IOS/GarageBand doesn’t deal with midi in the typical way. I ended up with an AirTurn switcher that has a midi over Bluetooth mode. I can’t remember exactly how I figured this out, but I’ll try to find you a video and link to it. Basically you have to go into ‘Accessibility’ in your IOS settings on your phone or iPad, and set up what’s called a ‘recipe’ that involves assigning each of the foot switches on your switcher, and then the trickiest part is that you have to hold your finger on the exact spot at the bottom of each live loop in order to set the switcher to hit the spot on the bottom of each ‘part’ of the songs (meaning the vertical columns that are your song sections in Live Loops, as opposed to you horizontal columns that represent your different instrument tracks). I know that sounds fucking confusing and it is, but I’ll try to find ya the video I used!

I started out composing electronic music on Garageband ON IPAD. I believe Garageband is capable of putting ideas and notes together, but falls short on anything technical. When I tranferred to Logic Pro (about a year ago) the amount of control I had was overwhelming. Yet, I persevered. I've learned about so many more ways to improve my instruments. Anyways, this video reminded me of how far I've come XD. Great content as always!

I tried to do things in GarageBand, but got incredibly frustrated very rapidly… more than likely because of my years in the studio. I like Logic much better. However, with that said, I CAN see GarageBand being incredibly helpful to write sketches (on a laptop) to be imported into Logic, then developed more fully. Overall, I really appreciate this video because it demonstrates that tools are tools and that the tools available now can be utilized as a means of learning and developing one’s talents. Some operations in GB are a lot easier than you guessed when you know some keyboard shortcuts and somehow hidden functions. E. g.: If you want to export only a part of a midi track as an audio you can select a loop or a region, then mark the checkbox "cycle or region" in the export menu and it won't render the whole song. Or if you want to access the plugins for a track, just press "b" on the keyboard when the correct track has been selected. I work exclusively in GB with a bunch of 3rd party plugins, Arturia KeyLab Essential and Universal Audio interface integration. The results may surprise some Logic users.

I’m curious as to if you’ve made a video of your actual recording “space”, or what appears to be your “sunroom” or whatever folks call it. 🤷‍♂️ Is it separate from your house or attached? Is it more like a greenhouse or a gardening shed? I’m thinking about building one for myself at my house. I live in North Dakota and I’d love to have the kind of views you appear to have from your space. Do you feel it’s secure enough in your neighborhood? Sorry for all the questions, but I’m very curious. And I want to copy you.😂

From the palpable horror of The Walk to searing triumph of the Gazing, Shoreline Walk captures our present cultural moment. Hey I was wondering if you could do a commentary on the Main Theme from Fallout 4 by Inon Zur. It starts out normal but veers off into this really confusing section, and finally seems to end as a completely different piece. I’d love to hear someone who really understands music explain what Zur is doing there.

The advantage of GarageBand, in this context, is the way it strips out all of the fine detail work, to show the basic workflow of writing a soundtrack to a video. So I think this is a rather amazing video for that reason. I'd be happy to see more. It also demonstrates that one does not need $5000 in kit and gear and software and sample libraries to write music. But why do you keep saying you can't change the time signature? Click on the "4/4" in the time code display, and select your time signature. And, while there aren't markers such as you find in Logic or Cubase, there does exist a set of arrangement markers.

Thank you so much for this video! I'm the director of the Rise Of the Brave Tangled Dragons fanfilm, B4: Guardians, and, since this fanfilm started almost 11 years ago, I wanted to create its original score myself! Yes, it's still in the storyboarding with audio (aka voice acting; the voice acting is phenomenal by the VAs that were chosen. My characters? Ehhh...not so much) stage, but I'd like to eventually put a score to it! I know now that this is not the longest a film has taken to come out, however it has been a passion project of mine pretty much since almost the end of my senior year of high school! Anyway, I've rambled on long enough...if anyone is interested in watching the fanfilm, please let me know, and I can redirect you to the fanfilm's KZread channel. Oh, and if you're a passion animator (an animator who animates for fun), please let me know! We currently have one animator, and I don't want to overwhelm them, as the fanfilm is over an hour long, and it's over 800 storyboard panels. But please watch this video (the video my comment is below) first, if you find this comment!

Great effort, but I stick with Reaper, because it's so versatile and powerful. And I use synths instead of samples, sometimes on the drums I use a sample, but very rare on other instruments.

@@ThinkSpaceEducation But I'm making video's for KZread with remastered tracks, and since my favorite free app is taken out of business, I might use GarageBand as replacement. Thanks for pointing me in that direction. Reaper is overkill for that kind of content. End good, all good.

I produced a home album on Garageband in 2005. Then life got in the way and I didnt get back to producing music as a hobby for 14 years. I now use Cubase and Reason. I enjoyed Garageband but it falls short compared my current DAWs Cubase and Reason. An unfair comparison I know.

And you haven't even touched all the free kits you can download for it. For a "DAW" with the cost of "free" it's really good value over many other offerings. *free as in comes with a purchase of an Apple device of choice.
