Amazing first experience of a Pandasal! My only problem is i have a hard time finding street vendors who sell them! 😢 As for the Balut I'm actually shocked on how it tasted, definitely wasn't expecting that!

You are thought wrong. I guess you are in Cebu? They don't normally eat balut on those regions. The Chinese first thought us in Pateros/Pasig/Laguna area how to make them in the precolonial days. Balot making only became mainstream recently everywhere else Philippines in the 90s. To eat the balut: 1. Crack the egg where the air pocket is localated(blunt end of the egg) and peel only to the point where you could easily remove the membrane inside taking good care not to overdo it lest the broth spill. 2. Add salt NOT vinegar. Plain salt enhances the flavor any red meats and since duck is red meat, plain salt will do the job. Swirl ligthly and let the salt melt and seep into the broth inside the egg. 3. Place the openning of the eggshell on your mouth and 'take a shot' of the broth. 4. You can now peel the shell bit by bit while taking bites of the duck. There will be some broth left at the bottom so be careful not to spill it. Sip the remainigng broth as you progress to the last bite. NOTE: Balut should ALWAYS be 18 days old and not younger. Otherwise, the egg white would not cover the chick and be thin enough. Instead it would be a VERY hard lump on the bottom.(Duck eggs have more protein than chicken eggs, hence the egg white is significantly harder when cooked.) Balut/Balot is a shorthand term for 'Balot sa puti'. Literal translation is 'Wrapped in white'. The chick inside will never be 'Wrapped' in its own eggwhite if it is less than 18 days old. If a vendor sells you a 'Balut' but its eggwhite is a hard lump in the bottom, DO NOT patronize them again. They are selling you the underaged, inferior product and destroys the balut industry while charging you the relatively expensive price of the genuine product.

Team No Skipping Ads over here. 🙌 Fun fact: Balut is a relatively cheap source of protein and calcium. Balut is considered to be one of the first exotic food delicacies of the Philippines inspired by Chinese culture dated back to almost 200 years ago. What once was considered a high-class dish is now enjoyed with a cold beer. It's as casual as an ice cream on a hot summer day and as pivotal an inclusion in the Philippines as ketchup is on a hot dog. Though when one sees balut for the first time, the reaction may not be the same as a hot dog. Without the understanding of the culture in which it was brought up, it's easy to say, "no, thank you." Well I consider it very brave of you to eat Balut as many are often grossed out trying it. ❤

Pandesal is the most popular bread in the Philippines for a good reason! With a golden, crumb-coated exterior, slightly sweet taste, and soft, fluffy texture, this Filipino-style bread roll is delicious on its own or with your choice of filling. Perfect for breakfast partnered in a cup of coffee or tea or you can eat it as a snack! ❤
