Filing Cabinet converted to Tool Box Rolling Chest

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Converting a lateral file cabinet to a rolling tool chest.
I didn't realize how cheap full extension slides have become and I ordered a set from Amazon to swap out the roller ones I used.
FULL extension drawer slides I needed 16inch for my 18" depth cabinet
2 PAIR(4) approx $8 a set: amzn.to/2NYl5vb
6 PAIR(12) approx $6 a set: amzn.to/2XlIV73
10 PAIR(20) approx $5 a set: amzn.to/37d8cEN
DIAMOND cut off blades for angle grinders: amzn.to/37eyS8f
Makita Cordless Angle Grinder(THIS THING ROCKS!): amzn.to/37aeO6V
These are links that I may or may not make a few pennies on if you order anything from Amazon.

Deep file cabinets like that are good for bulky tools that come in cases. They won't take up space in your main box that way and are protected from dirt. And you could lock them up. Good job on adding a drawer! Looks good 👍

I used to really like those plastic cases. These days they don't want to give out those cases and tools come with bags. I have a few of those plastic cases I've cut the guts out of and use for tool boxes that go into the trunks of vehicles.

Good idea, I made a side cabinet for my tool box with a regular size 2 drawer file cabinet. Put two shelves in it to hold aerosol and some of my supplies. Riveted the drawer fronts together and even made the lock functional so it is lockable. Turned out great, thinking of making another one.

I did the same thing. I actually have 5 - 5 drawer deep heavy duty filing cabinets stacked side by side. Mine are loaded up with heavy machine tools, drill indexes, reamers, lathe chucks, etc... The commercial duty file cabinets are built super strong with full extension heavy duty drawer slides. I paid $100 for all 5. Best money I've spent in years.

When you showed the piano dolly with wheels I thought great idea to bolt it under the cabinet. Makes it taller. Now it’s easy to roll around in all directions, quiet when rolling and easy to roll out with the tools needed to work on my vehicle. Also a piece of 1 inch plywood attached on top with a small vice would come in handy. Great job! Great idea! Thanks you amaze me every time.

You can drill small holes along a line you want to bend in sheet metal, then weld them shut. Ive done it both ways. I usually do the score method on the thicker metals and the hole method on sheet metal. But you can also get abrasive blades for your skill saw and that way you can set your depth of cut to ensure you won't come through.

  • @sixtyfiveford

    @sixtyfiveford

On thicker steel I will generally pop the angle grinder through in a few spots(especially the ends) and kind of do a combination of score/drill. Skill saw is a great idea. I actually have a metal cutting skill saw that I always forget I own.

  • @jdog4534

@@sixtyfiveford yea. I've actually got a couple carbide skill saw blades that cut plate steel like butter. One is for cutting steel under .125 thick. The other is for .125~.25/.375? I forget how thick is recommended I've only cut up a bunch of 3/16" corten steel, 1/4" diamond plate and a bunch of expanded steel. It was like cutting plywood of the same thickness. The only downside is they're expensive and they can't be sharpened. Forgot to mention, awesome video. I've been collecting all kinds of metal office furniture since the Meltdown. I've got a whole garage full of it. I scored a bunch of desks that are cool because they're modular. I got one wall lined with just modular desk drawers. a bunch of them are the half drawers like tool boxes. I've got two tanker desks identical that I want to stack on top of each other and turn it into a standing workbench. But haven't felt like doing all the body work LOL that's a great idea about putting a drawer inside the drawer. I never thought of that. I was just thinking the other day that I haven't seen your posts in while. I'm glad I'm back in sync. I like your videos. They're always along the lines of things I'm into or want to get into. Next project was to make a little cart for my 2 small welders and supplies using the bigger HF dolly, sides will be made of plywood. I'm not much of a metal guy....still learning. Great tip on scoring and bending even though I have a break. If you put a piece of angle iron or even straight piece of metal next to the score (try clamping to table) it can help bend sheet metal that is a little stubborn :) Really like the idea of dividing that big drawer space in two. I'd try to find some of that mat material they use on restaurant kitchen floors that's a kind of dense foam (probably other work areas too where folks stand a long time), and line the shelve bottoms with it. I think the constant clatter would get on my nerves. But that's me. Great project and well demonstrated. I kept an old filing cabinet for the same reason but never got around to it. Mostly because I couldn't think of a good way to do it but I may try this. I like the trick on make metal drawers. I just wish I could get metal cheap or free.

I stopped by a furnace repair business a few years back and took home a couple junk furnace/AC shells. I got 2 huge 16or18gauge 5x6foot panels from commercial AC units and a ton of 20/22gauge panels from home furnaces. It took me an hour to cut it flat at home but it stacks nicely and takes up no room. I still think grabbing a second free file cabinet would yield pre-made drawers, hardware and a decent amount to spare sheet metal from the back/sides.

@@sixtyfiveford awesome I'll have to try that. Most of the metal I've picked up so far was from thrift stores but that's only bed railings which come in handy for welding projects but sheet metal isn't something you can pick up just anywhere. Lowe's does sell some smaller pieces but it's not cheap and it's to small for projects like this. Thanks again.

I was debating this exact thing while filming. I bet a can of rubberized car undercoating sprayed on the underside would cure this or they sell tar/rubber sheets that have a sticky backing at the Home Depot. Car guys use it for sound deadening all the time.

I have a cabinet like that, someone painted it forest green. I store all of my handheld power tools and their respective roto-molded cases in there. Mine had levelling feet, but I just replaced the threaded feet with threaded casters, nuts and washers. I like your idea though, looks more robust. I have two old conventional filing cabinets from the 1960s or 1970s and years ago Wal-Mart sold wheeled universal fit file cabinet bases that my Mom used with them, and I now use them too since acquiring them from her.

Hey 65. To continue with the cheap out, try and find some burlap. Some old grain sacks or something. They make excellent drawer liners so you don`t wear off the inside paint with the wrenches. I use 3M spray adhesive to glue them in. Only prob, if you get mice, they tend to go straight for the burlap. They love the stuff. Just sprinkle some peppermint oil on the burlap to help deter them.
