I did NOT see that ending coming! Good play!

I saw it. It came out of his mouth. But it looked tool ong.
The rasp on my personal wish list is the "Shinto" or saw rasp. I got to use one once, and have been saving me pennies to pick one up. Also, for tough grain or hard woods, try a car body file. It works beautifully for shaping and removing file marks, depending on how much pressure you apply. Plus you can easily dress the edges without dipping it in acid.

Right on. I have videos on both of those.
My four in hand is my go to file. Use it on almost every project, especially when making spoons.
Appreciate how you have each separated from all other ones. Drives me nuts when I see guys just toss them in a drawer, banging teeth against teeth! Then, to find the one they're looking for, they bang through them rubbing them all together. So, again, good to see a craftsman caring for the tools that are caring for him.
Them puns coming out smooth tho
When I was a scout wood working was my favorite hobby. That and leather working. These tools are very valuable to me
I work in a school near Sheffield, England, as a physics tech. I makw a lot of equipment for the lessons where i can. Over the years i havw made sure to save and restore old hand tools as they get thrown out or not needed. I recently got an arm full of Sheffield steel mid 60s files, screwdrivers amd chisels. Something satisfying about mounting a new handle and oiling it 🥰
The deadpan look at the end of the puns is grandad level
Got to the end and you made me laugh and think, “what a dork!” LoL
One of my favorite files is a Grobet Vulcanite file. It is a sort of double half-round file intended for plastics, but it works well for wood, and can make some very elaborate complex curves quite easily - it is my favorite fine file for making the volute and heel on guitars.
Love your knowledge and humor. Thank you Sir!
This is possibly the best pun yet
4 in hand! I found one at a flea market for a few bucks. Really quite cheap because someone used it on plastic, tar and something else that gunked up the teeth. Some solvent, a bit of time with my file card and POW! Brand new tool. I love it! Works like a champ!
Thanks... Had not such a good handle on rasps.
😂 Great info! What an ending 😅😅!!
Interesting file storage! What about those people that think files just thrown in a drawer "sharpens" them?
Thank you for the education
I have over 1000 files in my shop. Anytime I go to an estate sale I buy them. The good ones I keep to use, the bad ones get turned into kitchen knives and other knives (I’m more of a black smith than a carpenter but I dabble in wood working so)
The local garage sales are an excellent source for inexpensive tools of this ilk, my dads generation were a band of brothers in many respects, hand tools were the norm, we are their beneficiaries in that and many other ways
Good advice and a dad joke too!
I have a broad collection, too. There's Isabelle, Sonia, Nia, Paulina, Camellia, Lily...
Smooth humour! LOL.
The choking sounds hit me off guard
hey man do you have any videos on a whole project? maybe a timelapse one. love your work cheers

Yes. I put out a full build video every Saturday.
I think the most valuable knowledge is that files have to be sharp. there is absolutely no use in old rusty files - a file is an expandable tool and once dull (in most cases) shall be exchanged
i love these final jokes ..
Ya know, I do the same thing with my metal work. Makes it less brazing.
BRAVO!!!
You really should invest in a filing cabinet at this rate.
I would absolutely love it if you posted a list of what you feel is a well rounded set of files by type and finess. I have no idea how to chose files for woodworking. Rasps are pretty well covered.

I might do that some day but it is a string out of the swatter kind of thing. where do you draw the line?

@@WoodByWrightHowTo so I did a deeper dive myself after I posted. I guess I was talking about things like Bastard Cut, Second Cut, and smooth files. Safety edges... not name brands but more like what profiles you need for woodworking. come on, how often do you get a chance to cleanly say "bastard" on youtube?
I just found a small set of various shaped hand stitched rasp in the property I just got
I'd love to see a YTsmith forge a four in hand

Cutting file teeth is a very difficult skill to get right, it took YEARS to train one person to cut file teeth properly.
personally I just use sandpaper or bobbin Sanders because I don't have too much access to files and radps
You need a filing cabinet
Good dad joke !
Am I the only one who read the title as "flies and wasps" lol
So whats some of your personal favorite things to build, rebuild, craft or work on?? Like what kind of projects?? Cabinets, desks, chairs, tools, doors, etc. ??

I make whatever interest me. And my interests change from time to time. I love learning new things and experimenting.
You are a blatant and unrepentant punster. Hat's off to you, sir!
That’s a amazingly fine beard you have 😮
Whats the best way to get rid of fibres after sanding a rough board?
@WoodByWrightHowTo
Жыл бұрын
Often sanding creates fuzz on the surface. Usually I find a card scraper is the best way to get rid of that. Or hit it with a little bit of water to raise it up and when it dries hit it with a finer sandpaper.

@@WoodByWrightHowTo thanks, i tried burning them and then sanding again which gave mixed results
I have such a crush on this guy but I only just realized he's a wood worker have to be mature and not make a bad joke

I thought he was just talking about tools and just so happened all.of the ones I saw were for wood.
So there’s files, rasps, and floats… are there other similar tools? (Cheese grater, too… sorta.)
@WoodByWrightHowTo
Жыл бұрын
Yes. But most of them tend to fit into these categories. You can also get rifflers. But those tend to be classified under files or rasps. There are also grating planes. Those tend to be classified under rasps.
Are those fine files the same as metal working ones?
@WoodByWrightHowTo
Жыл бұрын
Yup. All the files are the same.
Do you have a Shinto Rasp?
@WoodByWrightHowTo
8 ай бұрын
Yes. I have a few of them. They're not my favorite. Every now and then they have a place but on organic curves I generally don't like them much. Just personal preference.
Recently subscribed (like a week ago or so) wood noob here; is there any way you can sharpen those?
@WoodByWrightHowTo
Жыл бұрын
Files and rasps are resharpenable. You can clean them, but once they're dull is they are not something you can sharpen. Floats on. The other hand are often made of soft metal that you can resharpen.
@autumn5592
Жыл бұрын
Files and rasps are not sharpenable dispite what some people say; acid baths will just clear any debris stuck in the flutes and oxides. The theory is that is will reduce the faces of the teeth on the file, making a sharp point again, but that's not true, you cannot spot reduce with acid (well, to that level of fineness.) Not to say that acid baths don't do something, because they do, just not the way people think they do. Files and rasps are consumables, not a tool for life. They may have years to decades of life from a normal person using them though. Moreso on just wood. The only true way to make rasps and files sharp again is to recut them. A skill extremely few people have. But, as James said, floats are sharpenable.
Does anybody have a link to a quality made 4 in hand? Mine just doesn't cut at *all* even after chemical sharpening.
@WoodByWrightHowTo

Honestly I would just go pick up a cheap one off of Amazon. Once they dull out You recycle them. Even the best ones can't be resharpened.

Unfortunately, I don't know if any companies that are actually making high-end four in one tools. I wish someone would make one with hand stitched teeth. But not yet.
Laughs in metalworker.
Like your puns.
I always wondered how u got such a raspy voice
😂
hopefully you didnt have to make to many takes that you got a rasp in your voice
I wonder if he has a pedo file?
Yes, have a collection of Mexican milling machines. They don´t eat frijoles or electricity and will work when called upon. Keeping them clean helps a lot.
