Figuring It Out with One Tree Hill's Infamous Villain: Paul Johansson

Paul Johansson of One Tree Hill joins me this week on Trying To Figure It Out. We discuss how Paul went from playing professional basketball to joining the cast of One Tree Hill and which character he originally wanted to audition for. Paul played the infamous villain of One Tree Hill, Dan Scott, and he talks about the toll that the character took on his mental health.
You’ll learn some of Paul’s stage secrets about how he approached Dan’s character and some of the motivations behind Dan’s actions. We talk about that episode and Paul reveals how difficult it was for him to kill off one of his best friends on the show, Craig Sheffer.
Paul shares how leaving the show helped manage his depression and alcoholism, and he discusses all of the things he’s been up to now that his mental health is in a better place.
If you’re a One Tree Hill fan, you’ll love this episode and the previous episode with Craig Sheffer (May 23, 2023).

Fantastic interview! No one else could have played Dan Scott like Paul Johansson did. Absolute perfection. Such an iconic performance and character, he made audiences feel torn about such a horrible person.

It's so upsetting to know how much he was hurting and how badly fans of the show would treat him. He's such an amazing actor and Dan is my favourite character on the show because his acting was so great.

Paul did a fantastic job playing Dan. I always cry when he dies, you become so invested in his character overtime. It makes me SO sad , he struggled with his mental health on the show and how people treated him like he was a real life Dan Scott. but glad he is in a better place today. Thanks for this episode !

He was so amazing and was so vital in that show! I'm so heartbroken to hear that he was depressed for 7 years because of how people treated him 😢

I really appreciate Paul opening up during the mental health segment. Everything that he says he is about being thin skinned and sensitive was so powerful. Makes me feel like it's okay to be that way.

Your opening statement on what this show is to you is literally me! Every word you said. It means more than a show it's crazy how they did that to us
