JonJorgenson thank you for your inspirational videos. Although I'm considerably older, they're relevant just the same, and every bit of exposure to the Word, combined with fellowship, helps bring me closer to living in the Spirit. This nihilistic perception must be very pervasive among today's youth. Another channel I follow, although rather secular, recently covered the same topic: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fIVhu6aSfJDgqtY.html It's really endearing to see positive and inspirational personalities making a change, steering our future leaders in a positive direction! 'Gonna show my 14yo daughter some of your videos, it's becoming clear that this nihilism is partially to blame for her struggles these last couple years. Thanks again, Jon! (I actually have a friend in Pennsylvania with the exact spelling of your first and last name, lol! - Uff da!)

Nihilism doesn't necessarily mean life is meaningless but it means we don't believe in an objective purpose. Say, that I am a robot designed to become a man's companion, friend, etc. That is an objective purpose. However, we do have a subjective purpose. By that, I mean that individuals can define their own purpose of living. I think there are many things that influence what we define as our purpose and the reason we fight to reach such a goal. I believe this should have been made clear on this video.

Let me ask you this then, if there is no objective purpose in life, why do you value your own subjective purpose? Also if there is no objective purpose in life, isn't that just another semantically way of saying "life is meaningless"

I think the end of Ecclesiastis itself shows how God is the meaning. Also we take ourself so seriously, and it is kind of comforting knowing our earthly pursuits are not as important as we think, so we can just trust God and relax.

I mean I'm a Christian ( now I'm pretty fucked up still, and I am struggling with a porn addiction) But Im Nihilistic, when it comes to our morals. We made the morals we have today, I follow Gods morals. I try to obey the laws God states, but besides those laws I ignore evrything else. It's hard to put into words. If I die today, i don't care, If i die tommarow, I dont care. The fact I know I'm going to heaven when I die, is the reason I dont care if I die because its inevitable.

I'm not a Christian, but I love this work! I've given it a lot of thought and would like to share what I've come up with. Maybe it'll resonate with someone else as well: Summary: For the casual reader, the Ecclesiastes is self-contradicting, because the main speaker holds two contradictory believes. He believes that God is perfectly wise, but his creation is meaningless. The solution to the paradox is to read the text as an admission of the limitations of human intellect, and the superiority of faith over reasoning. The Ecclesiastes at first glance appears self-contradicting: the main speaker (believed to be King Solomon by most scholars) keeps returning to the idea that earthlife is meaningless, yet he firmly believes that God, the creator of everything, is perfectly wise. How can the creation of a perfectly wise being be meaningless? Doesn't a creation reflect its creator? King Solomon doesn't restrict his claim of meaninglessness to human actions only. If he did, one could argue that some of the meaninglessness of the world is due to the imperfection of humans who lack God's wisdom and as a result, often choose to do meaningless activities. But King Solomon extends his claim to everything on earth: he claims that God's creation is meaningless, even though God is perfectly wise. Not only does King Solomon claim that he himself is wise (as wise as any human could ever hope to become), but that he also achieved everything a human could hope to achieve (he experienced every pleasure, has accomplished everything anyone could ever hope to accomplish). In short, he's "book smart" and "street smart". But despite his accomplishments, he fails to see a meaning to anything on earth, yet he maintains that the creator of the earth is perfectly wise. One way to solve this puzzle is to see King Solomon as a person whose faith is stronger than his reason, but who also has enough intellectual honesty to not make up a comfortable lie. The Ecclisastes provides a completely thorough and logical analysis of earthlife, and the true conclusion is that humans need faith instead of reason, because reason fails to see the true meaning that God intends. So what Solomon is saying is that we humans are too limited to understand God's plan, because we can't step out of our earthly perspective. We can interpret what Solomon says as saying that if earthlife was everything to existence, it would be meaningless, but since God is wise, earthlife must have a meaning, which leaves as the only logical conclusion that the point of earthlife isn't to pursue things that belong to earthlife, but to prepare oneself for the afterlife, which is a different mode of being as compared to earthlife. The Ecclesiastes can be read as a consolation for theists: if one sees no meaning in life, that's because from an earthly perspective, one can't see a meaning. Even the most accomplished human who has ever lived didn't see one, yet he had enough faith to believe that this was just a human limitation. God does have a plan, and our job is to have enough faith and live our lives as best we can in preparation for the time when God's plan is going to be revealed to us to a greater degree.

Right on point. I wanted to share my experience about my kind of nihilistic worldview for a long time now, and this video fits right into my topic. Since I was little I had a kind of special relationship with the fact of death and the end of my existence. I have this scary unchristian picture of it as a big and black nothingness with no emotions, memories or thoughts. I have to state here first that I would never really describe myself as a nihilistic person. I am positive amd serene person, but when the thought of this kind of death takes over me it really shapes my emotions and my whole personality in those times. Even though I concider myself as Christian this thing is still there, it' still a part of me. It comes to my mind in s certain periods of time, mostly when I ran out of everything to think about. These times are mostly when I'm waiting to fall asleep and it's like a wave of panic. The first thought of it is kind of when you slip on the top of a hill and in the next second you're already sliding down on it and you can't stop. (More in the comments KZread won't let me write more)

When it gets too strong I have to grab something, make a sound or bite my hand but it doesn't happen that often I jave learned to control it's outcomes. I don't want to portray it that tragic but it's very scary. Sometimes I think I make myself slide down on that hill. I've dug myself very into the Bible for some time now. Maybe this picture of death is a wall that God want's me to break trough with his power. Or maybe I could just pass right by it because who said that it's a wide wall? I don't have to have all of my focus on my fear rather than on Jesus. I'm still getting to know Him and I'm figuring out how can I get closer to Him. I just wanted to share my experience down here because I haven't met anybody yet who had this same fear as I do. Let me quote our local pastor as a finishing sentece. I asked him about this fear, too. He said 'God would never let that happen to you.' I was a bit upset because this answer because I was in a bit unbelieving phase in that time, but now I believe that it was the best answer I could ever recieve about this question.

It depends what kind of nihilist you are really. But in my opinion, life is meant to be cherished and to be a blessing. But simply, live it to its fullest extent and don't waste your life away, be happy you existed in the first place, if your one cog in the machine, that being the multiverse, if you stopped working, the whole machine would stop working, but at this point this sounds like a rant, so I'll stop it from here, plus your comment was from 4 years ago so It's not like anyone is gonna see this.

I've came to the conclusion that life has one meaning and everything else means nothing, if there us an afterlife which I believe and pray and hope there is we would be building towards it and that would be in our progress, wisdom, knowledge of The Bible The Word Of GOD, and being Christ like and that would help us to leave an eternal forever lasting impact on every human that we come into contact with if there willing to hear The Gospel and research shows the average person knows about 600-1600 people, now take those people and the 600-1600 people they might know and that'll add up to millions maybe billions of lives being eternally impacted for Heaven and everlasting life in abundance with GOD The Father and his Son JESUS Christ, we only know if eternal life is true when we seek GOD and well know hes actually there and The lord JESUS is his sin but inspiring philosophy had a video on life after death being possible so yeaa that's my take

"Oh, well if nothing matters then why bother?" Why would you wanna end your life prematurely when there's so much to live for. Why die now? You've got time to kill so just have fun! Yes, life is inherently pointless and meaningless, there isn't a grand reward for your efforts and you'll die one day unexpectedly and it'll all cut to oblivion. BUT! You have time, so make it count and do cool things, make good art, start a business, do what makes you happy or die sad and afraid. I'm an Optimistic Nihilist, Absurdist and Atheist, because the vast infinity of space itself and the passage of time doesn't make a lick of sense, and it doesn't have to. I'm just a talking monkey in space. =w= Also you completely lost me at the jesus part in which he "unlocked eternal life" like how tf does that even work.

True I am kinda like this to mate i am not saying I am kinda nihilistic and atheist as well but at the same time I am not saying for certain there is no god or an afterlife that comes with the package but mostly highly likely so that meaning like you said once you die life no longer goes on for that once living been or creature which can be sad but in the end we have no control of It and it's highly likely the universe is just doing what's it's doing and is a bunch of engery simple as so that means all that matters is maybe doing something for others or trying to do enjoyable things or at least live and be normal as I don't see why just ending it is so smart as your either dead or alive and why die? Normal people live without thinking about anything and still live sure if your suffering and you can solve the problem and you don't believe in an afterlife so u don't fear the hell and your not worried about an end to your life in general I see that you are being smart about it but personally for me I am not living a dream life but I am doing OK I do have some what things to do and live for and yeah it's just how the world works I guess
