Fighting Games Were Surprisingly Common on the Gameboy Advance

This video is the first in a series tackling as many handheld fighting games as I can find. Today's features are Tekken Advance, the two Street Fighter GBA titles, and Guilty Gear Advance. Two of these games are pretty good. The other two... not so much.
Along the way, I talk about what could have been had Namco not signed an exclusivity deal with Sony following Soul Calibur 2, the weird relationship fighting game publishers have had with Nintendo since the N64's release, and how Capcom's insane demands doomed a very promising studio. Plus there's some talk on game design as I try to adapt Street Fighter onto a controller layout that rejects motion inputs like the plague.
The next video is probably going to be on the Mortal Kombat and KOF GBA titles, but if that's taking too long, I'll do something on a few 3DS fighting games that I've already got a script for. Or a little video on Huntdown.

I'm in that weird intersection of being a fighting game fan and mostly sticking to Nintendo consoles, something about me having grown up with the SNES and its genuinely brilliant fighting game library, but that also means that I was specifically seeking out whatever happened to release on Nintendo systems, and I actually did get into Guilty Gear because of X Advance, and later on XX AC+ on Wii! These days I play a lot more fighting games on PS1 and PS2, and my PS3 collection consists of literally just 3 fighting games lol But I do still have a VERY soft spot for those games that just happened to get released on Nintendo systems, which I could actually play when I was younger.

Glad you liked it. I got another one on the KOF and Mortal Kombat titles already uploaded, and I'm working on a B-Daman video; goal on getting that out is the first week of next month.

Well made! I'm not sure how well the SF special move options you threw out would work in practice, but again, with the design in mind that the games aren't meant to be one to one ports, I think it'd work wonderfully as a portable SF game with simpler controls

Knowing Nintendo, I feel like Sony probably gave namco a good deal for exclusivity, and Nintendo probably didn't. Mid-00s was a pretty strong time for their relationship though. They had the triforce arcade board, star fox assault, pacman vs etc.

Loved both street fighters on my GBA back then. Not sure I could stand them now on the tiny console 😅👍

Found an old journal I had from ages ago with pages for each game. They gave games new life and let the player feel that little bit sneaky. It was awesome.

@@GohLow Yeah Tekken should have had more of a presence on Nintendo. And yeah Tekken 4 and 5 should have made it to Gamecube, you look just like me Gow Low. It's nice to meet someone else who thinks the same :)

Checked around and there isn't any option to edit the volume in the KZread editor. I'll be sure to increase the volume on future videos though.

i don't know how you have issues on the sfa3, i had no problem pulling specials even on an actual gba

Yeah it was surprising for me too, because I was pulling off KBDs in Tekken Advanced on a real gba just fine.

@@GohLow I meant it as, i was able to pull off moves *in* sfa3, in the console, i wonder why you couldn't though? maybe it has to do with one of the settings that makes it more lenient

From most of what I have gotten, Namco has a grudge against Nintendo, mostly due to Yamauchi. They hate most of their practices, so they flocked to Sony. And they almost never looked back since. They proudly became Sony's lapdog.
