Fighting for the People | Gerry Spence | TEDxJacksonHole

Renowned trial lawyer Gerry Spence reflects on justice in a powerful personal retrospective.
Gerry Spence has been called the greatest trial lawyer of a generation. Decades of excellence in the courtroom give him an unparalleled vision and continued voice. In fact, the courtrooms of America serve as muse and inspiration for his books, poems, award winning photography and visual art. He continues his journey in fighting injustice through the foundation of his Trial Lawyer’s College, begun in 1994, which educated thousands of warriors dedicated to the pursuit of justice on behalf of real people.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

@Dank Uranium , Atty. Gerry Spence was the defence lawyer of former first Lady Imelda Marcos of the Philippines during the trial in New York due to US government persecution against the Marcos Family. Imelda Marcos got acquitted of all the case that were filed against them.

What I admire most about Gerry Spence is his willingness to tell the jury/audience what is true for him. For 30 years I have been training people to transform stage fright and fear of public speaking. For most of those years, I have read a couple pages from Gerry's book "How to Argue and Win Every Time" out loud to my classes. He is willing to share his fear with listeners. And that authenticity is what the magic that transforms fear into excitement to share ideas, insights and expertise! Gerry is my hero.

While listening to Atty.Gerry Spence, I remember how he defended our own Mdm.Imelda Marcos in New York. But it's so sad that the truth didn't reach our people' so that even to these days,Marcos' children and grandchildren are still being 'persecuted' . Truth shall prevail in God's time. Thank you sir..you are one of a kind, God bless you...!!!

Such authenticity. No substitute for a man like him. Could of been an extraordinary actor. He's telling the truth. Decades ago I got crushed by an impaired car driver. For a decade the insurance company said I was faking. I found out at trial that their defence medical found I had irreversible nerve damage which left me in grinding. Intractable and excrutiatingly pain. At trial, the insurance company gave my lawyer a lot of money and he said you know what I think you're faking, the judge is laughing at u and we should settle for sixty thousand. I later found that medical report prepared for the insurance company by the defense orthopedic surgeon, and it found found that I had irreversible nerve damage. Some times the worst part of an accident is that u survived. 3 Decades post accident, Oxycontin, hydromorphone and a prayer get me walking. I was the that old guy Jerry Speaks of but I just didn't know it.

Gerry Spence is a mind-blowing genius. He was intended to make the winning case, just as we were meant to walk. When conflict has been your forbidden fruit since childhood, the winning argument should start with a mentality that allows you to argue freely. When you make an argument based on your own authority, it will not only prevail, but it will also stand out among the rest. On the other hand, requiring the winning argument involves the application of sophisticated methods. Spence has the necessary tools to achieve excellent results. May he live for at least another 30 years.

reminds me of the movie a civil action and various other ones that weaves in the transformation of lawyers and their confessions. but do these stories of public repentance have more impact on lawyers whose temperament is unformed and yet to be tested than simply narration of personal revelations? In Spence's case he's actually implemented what has a capacity for change. But I'm still uncertain about instilling in people the kind of sense of justice he hopes to deliver through the speech just by sharing personal stories such as these-not to mention that his discovery of the calling of justice only came as a culmination of events and the accidental encounter with the old man. After all, real changes only come with intimate relationship with the incident and the internal realization that follows.

I can't understand how you can call people ordinary. Aren't they extraordinary for working in an oil refinery, day in and day out living a dream to take their grandchildren to the wilderness...? Or are they only ordinary until they can achieve a level of success in depriving good people of justice?

And I hope good lawyers will be on the other side defending the understanding of people's right to gather together and incorporate. Gerry has a good heart, God given skill at lawyering but his philosophy is disordered.
