i'm from indonesia, raised and born in kediri, trained and competed competitive silat in 6 years, won many tournament, fast forward, i go to kick boxing community at jakarta, got the biggest humbling really quick, now u train boxing and muaythai, real self defense

I spent 3 years in Jakarta learning Silat. Yes, I'm a white guy, but being a Muslim it was easy to communicate in Arabic.

My brother married a woman from Jakarta gave me a sword with a dragon head with a long horse hair mane told me some guy who didn't like him a practitioner of black magic blew some type of powder in his face and he fell ill for quite awhile.

Arabic is not the language in Indonesia and almost no Indonesian actually speaks Arabic. Just some words related to religious ceremonies are used.

I have nothing but respect for Jimmy and Doug. They give their all despite rigorous training and serious injury. The two of them are true warriors and have the hearts and spirits to match.

Silat is also being practiced in southern part of the Philippines,Mindanao, where most of the Muslim Filipinos lived.

Women need to learn to defend themselves. I'm happy that the culture encourages this! From what little I know of the MidEast, women MUST be accompanied by a male relative if they need to leave the house. My problem is that what I know is from books, the Internet, and, magazines. There are many types of pencak silat martial arts that are spread throughout Indonesia in particular and Southeast Asia in general. The silat that is being shown in competitions today is not a deadly move against an opponent but rather a sport and an art. because if it is not limited the effects of the deadly secret moves will cause severe injuries. even death if the original moves of each pencak silat are allowed to be used to achieve a victory in battle

This is sport based silat, that's why their hands are down to prevent punches to the bodyguard of which the opponent would gain points from. In a real situation, the hands won't be in that manner.

You know I have a background in MMA, BJJ and JKD. I can understand where you're coming from. That said I started taking Silat, and I'm beginning to understand the movements better and they actually will work when applied in force.

You’ll come to appreciate it, indonesia is a land rich in culture, history and warfare…they are the only few countries that could brag about defeating the mongols. Not everything has to be about fighting, but more so to represent their history. And then they kick each other… karate has kata, muay thai has waikru. Pencak silat is still developing in the modern kickboxing and mma aspects

Art is what is left after the genius who invented it died and no1 can replicate or understand the actually martial art and you get sht like that.

Why dont wrestle them more? Especially as a mma fighter. I think these silat fighters are remarkable quick on kicks and catching kicks. Also the transitions from kicks into throws seem quite nice and applicable to mma. But their wrestling is kind of non- existent, although i guess you're allowed to like double leg in silat? So why not do them some dirty and outwrestle them?

well they are both in the same family art arnis was derived from silat and fencing silat has a variety of different styles. it focus on dancing, ceremonial weddings, weapons, and real combat or sometimes self-defense combat demonstrations arnis focus on stick fighting, knife, bladed weapons, disarming techniques, pressure testing, and empty hand street fights or grappling hand-to-hand combat although it sometimes can be a bit sloppy to practice those moves. same thing with silat
