I would agree so much. A problem trying to learn more 40k is that everything beyond basics is so paywalled, I can't afford buying a few models every month and spending 30 euro on premium memberships on a student budget. This channel is a goldmine in more ways than one.
I really like the short tactical videos! Helps people who don’t play as much learn without worrying about bothering random people in game stores to beat with us while we learn
Great examples and very helpful mate. Looking forward to more content like this.

For the Abadon vs Grey Knight example, this is a great case of using heroic intervention to get into combat range before the charging unit (which is about to activate and pile in) can activate.

I definitely forgot to pile in on a unit I didn't declare a charge against last game, and it would have been a game changer for sure.

Direct at the start of the video at around 2:25, you touch a model and then put it back down because it couldn’t base. But that is totally legal too as long as it can end in melee range.

Really good tips! I think it would've been even better for newer players if you didn't use "pile in" terminology when talking about consolidation as some people might get them mixed up. Still great advice
I think the real important thing to remember here if you have a unit that fights first is to not leave anything else nearby for your opponent to charge into and then pile into your fights first unit. Shouldn't be impossible.
Just to be sure: in the first example, you can do this “stretched line trick” because the sentence in core rules book “each model in the charging unit must end its charge move closer to one of the unit selected as a target of its charge” is interpreted as “closer than before” and not “as closer as it can”, correct?
@roberthutchinson5482
Ай бұрын
Core Rules p. 6/60 - units of 7+ models, to be coherent, MUST be in 2" of TWO other models; p. 12/60 - charges can only happen if you maintain unit coherency; p. 14/19, no model may pile in unless it ends up in engagement range AND you maintain unit coherency; p. 35/60 - likewise, no consolidation moves are allowed to be made if the unit does not maintain coherency. So the initial conga line example looks bogus to me.
You really live up to your name.

Bes to bes
Re: second case study-When the rules say , “each model in that unit can instead make a Consolidation move towards the closest objective marker”, does “toward” technically mean in a straight line toward the center of the objective mat? Seems like you could get a similar result, just with a little less flexibility on placement

I feel like if you charge your models you should be base to base if possible with at least your own unit. I mean it doesn’t really make sense to call a charge and then have this long stretched out line of guys who just said naw were good staying where we are. But that’s the rules. People write them then gamers break them.

its very weirdly put man, but good shit
The idea that your highly trained super soldiers just explode if they're not within hand holding range of their battle brothers combined with no initiative stat leads to stuff like this. Makes no sense! Unless you try to make sense of bad rules! ;)

6:51 I’m confused on how you can move the big guy onto the object and not towards the unit you are charging?
@40kDirtbags

You have to nice towards the closest enemy unit, so they might not be the closest after your charge
I thought someone recently told me that only the models that can pile into engagement or onto the objective are the ones allowed to move. Pls tell me they’re wrong!
@40kDirtbags

If there is one model within 3 the whole unit can move. It's model by model to pile in if you can get into base to base and you decide to move you have to base it.
@Thiccyg

I just read it and it specifies that the UNIT has to end in engagement range, or else no MODELS can move.

RAW, if you elect to Pile-In, you HAVE to end the move closer to the closest enemy model. To me this seems like a wierd rules interaction and I think it should say something along the lines of "Each time a model makes a Pile-in move, it must end that move closer to the closest enemy model that was subject to a charge by this unit, or charged an enemy unit."
Wait, doesnt the fight phase starts by checking to see if any of your opponents, (the players turn who is NOT taking place) units can activate first with "fights first"? Meaning your opponent would activate his "fight first" unit before abaddon? (Who piled in) Just trying to wrap my head around this, we're saying you can bypass a "fight first" unit by...not charging, but piling in on them?

@DaGwimWeaper

He means that by doing the pile in move toward the "fights first" unit and wiping them out thus negating their rule is pretty underhanded. Unfortunately GW's initial videos on how charging works in 10th ed. seems to be negated by how their own ruling was written. If I'm remembering correctly they stated that you wouldn't be able to pull off pile in shenanigans like you demonstrated in this video. Seems like they contradicted themselves with the rules writing team.@@40kDirtbags

I 100% agree with you there! I'm just merely stating what GW's intentions were on the charge phase going into 10th as per the videos they released leading into the edition. It seems like they AoS-ified the charge phase which is good in the sense that there's less to keep track of in the nitty gritty details. Fantastic video nonetheless! Really enjoy the clarification on the rules with how you explain it!@@40kDirtbags
Sorry but you exemple is just bad : if your unit is within engagement range of an enemy unit, you cannot "choose" to pile in or not. You MUST perform a pile in move. Same for consolidating, unless youre no longer within engagement range of the enemy unit, in which case you can indeed choose to consolidate or not towards objective/enemy unit. But only then.
@40kDirtbags
6 ай бұрын
Sorry not sure what you mean.
@TheRationalCarpenter
6 ай бұрын
Where do you get this rule? I see that a unit *can* make a pile-in move, and that *if made* must conform to a set of rules. But I see nothing stating that a pile-in move must be made during the Pile In step.
@Thiccyg
6 ай бұрын
Even if someone at the table was stating that a Pile in move MUST be made (which is not stated anywhere per @TheRationalCarpenter 's explanation), you take the same example but pile in 1mm, because the rules state in no uncertain terms 'Up to 3"' which is a range of the smallest movement you can make, reasonably 1mm-3". 1mm wont change the example
@halfLotusMusic
6 ай бұрын
Incorrect. You CAN move up to 3" towards the closest enemy model in pile in. Your move must take you closer to closest enemy model
