Fight Master Breaks Down Sword Fighting From Film & TV | WIRED

Ойын-сауық

Sword fighting expert Christina Traister examines a variety of scenes from movies and television featuring sword fighting and applies her expert analysis. Could Darth Maul really hold off two attackers like in 'The Phantom Menace'? Was Arya's sword training in 'Game of Thrones' accurate? Did the Black Knight from 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail' really only sustain a mere flesh wound?
Christina Traister is an Associate Professor of Acting and Stage Combat at the University of Michigan

Astronauts and astronomers have clearly defined job roles whereas 'knight' is far more broadly defined, therefore to answer the question "do knights exist in the modern day" you first have to arrive at a working definition of knight. Let me know if you need me to dumb that down further for you.

I think part of what makes the Princess Bride fencing duel so good is that it really leans into that and doesn't even try to seem realistic. Like, the fight is just something that's happening in the background and it's really about the back-and-forth they're having.

As a fencing coach for over 10 years, the fencing blades are "epees" not "foils" in the James Bond bit. The gauntlet of a fencing glove is often closed with velcro and there is a small opening for the body cord (which connects to the epee for scoring) to exit. Blades do occasionally find their way into that hole and draw blood. Bruising, small cuts, and "road rash" are common injuries in sport fencing. One time when I was just started out, I accidentally thrusted my epee all the way up someone's arm through the hole in their gauntlet. "Halt"(meaning "stop") was called immediately and the ref and I checked on my opponent to make sure he was OK. He was fine; we kept fencing after he closed his gauntlet a little tighter. It happens. Fencing is still statistically one of the safest sports.

I was a fencer in college. In the Bond scene, I have seen nearly that exact injury when a foil accidentally got between the sleeve and the glove. But, it was not on purpose as it was in the movie. I don't think you could pull it off on purpose. He continued the match and even with his foil wrist bleeding, he won against someone who was really a better fencer than himself.

In the Star Wars clip, they cut a lot out, but in a 2 v 1 situation, the 2 want to attack in a line with one in front and one in back, while the 1 wants to keep the 2 in front in a triangle, and in the choreography of the entire fight, we see them do just that with the Jedi constantly maneuvering to put one of them behind Darth Maul, and Darth Maul countering by maneuvering so that he puts them both back in front of him. That choreography was absolutely brilliant. probably one of the best choreographed fight scenes in all of Star Wars.

She does well at breaking down scenes and definitely knows a lot, but I'd have liked to see more critiques on the unrealistic techniques throughout all the videos. A few HEMA youtubers who do practice sword fighting have reviewed some of the clips in this video and had some different opinions about the bad choices that the fighters make. These clips are rife with hollywood shenanigans that would put you at a disadvantage in a real life scenario,. things like spinning around, making cuts without a hope of connecting, deflecting blows over and over and never following up with counter cuts. Choosing non-lethal attacks when a potential fatal blow is starring at them in the face. (like james bond one where he hits james in the back with the sabers guard instead of stabbing his back?)

If I remember right, Michelle Yeoh actually hurt herself (pulling a muscle really bad or something like that) shooting the scene that was shown in this, and I think it was early in production as well, which is why this is the best fight scene she has in the movie, because her fights had to be toned down so that she could still do them with an injury for the rest of the film. It's a shame because she is really good.

Men at Arms made a Blade replica out of titanium and when they took it to the sanding belt the sparks on that thing were insanely bright. he had to use welder googles and a breathing mask because of the fumes. so i imagine depending on the force sparks would have been easier with a titanium blade.

I loved this video and your conclusion. However, having been a three-weapon fencer, your point at 23:43 about the weapons they've been fencing with being "foils" is actually a little inaccurate. They are fighting with epees. They are not wearing the lames in the target areas of their body for foil (shoulder to shoulder, neck to crotch). Their target area is the whole body. Additionally, the large bell guard of each weapon indicates an epee as well. Otherwise, I loved your analysis of all the fighting styles in this break-down. I would love to meet, even virtually, and chat fighting at some time in our lives. You are a pleasure to listen to.

I do wish, in the Troy scene she would have talked about how unrealistic it would be to jab the point of your sword straight into the opponents shield like they do. That is a good way to break the point, or at the very least dull and or bend it. They are using Bronze swords so the tip would definitely get bent at the very least hitting into the shield like that. Also, they spend so much of the fight with their shields either at their side or behind them where it will do no good as it can block nothing when it is not between you and your opponents weapon. I find it very irksome when they bother to give the actors shields and then they spend the entire fight with the shield off to the side or holding it behind them.
