I turned on this podcast and went to town! I fell in love with my home all over again! Crazy thing is I prayed the night before asking God to give me motivation to get out of my funk and clean. Unlike many others, I love cleaning. I really do enjoy it! So when my house is in disarray, there's definitely something wrong with me. Cass, let's just say, you were an answered prayer. God really used you to help me take back my home! I came downstairs this morning and I felt so grateful for my home! Thank you!!!!

I related to your comment. Sometimes we don’t have the mental energy to do things. I too want to have the strength to declutter my home, so I can enjoy the house I live in. I have also prayed for the inner strength to do it. I hope I can get to the point you have x

Ugh! You are so right about "fighting" for your home! I have battled my weight since I was in the 8th grade. I had a closet full of clothes from size 10 & up. I kept holding on to them, because I didn't want to give up on ever losing the weight & wearing them again. (Thinking I was holding on to hope.) Boy, was I wrong!!! Ii finally said, "Screw it! I am what I am & I want a pretty closet!" LOL I purged that sucker from top to bottom, put in nice shelving, & arranged my "real" clothes by color. Ta Da!!! It looked so wonderful that I bought a small chandelier to hang in there! AND it turned out...wait for it...there was carpet in there!!! LOL I hadn't seen the floor in so long, I'd forgotten! The biggest payoff wasn't the pretty closet, though. It was the FREEDOM I felt without those too small clothes shaming me every time I opened the door! I had no idea how bad they made me feel! So keep reminding you followers that someone else will appreciate those clothes that don't fit you now. Donate them to a women's shelter or burn them in the back yard - whatever. Just chalk it up to accepting & loving yourself! 😂

I had 2 dresses when I was smaller, and I cannot throw them away. Not because I think I will go back down to a 12 but because of the pure happiness I remember when I wore them. How beautiful I felt in them (even more than my wedding dress). But they will go into a memory box and be removed from sight. I am so glad you feel the freedom you deserve. I also had never realized I was letting my smaller-size clothes hold me hostage. I am so enjoying Clutterbugs videos.

Dianne, the funny thing that happened to me with my "skinny" clothes is after I got rid of all the clothes that used to fit but were too small for me...then the weight started coming off!!! All this was happening when I was a size 16/18. But after I got rid of what didn't fit, then I was able to lose weight. Now I'm a size 2. True story!!!

We're not just at war with our houses; We're at war with our minds. Our minds refuse to engage head on and tackle and make decisions about the physical items in our houses, for whatever valid reason (could be mental, psychological, anxiety, depression etc), so we choose to not engage and the stuff piles up from neglect. That's clutter. The more we practice making direct decisions, as scary as it is to start, the easier it gets. Keep going. We win the war by engaging, not avoiding. You can do it!

I feel bad about getting rid of stuff when I think about the money I spent on it. I know I’ll never get that money back. It’s gone. I like the point you made when you said, “You already wasted the money, but now you’re wasting the space.” I need to remember that from now on. The money I spent won’t be regained, but I need to regain the space instead of letting that stuff take up valuable real estate in my home. Space is a commodity I need to take more seriously.

Cass, I might well be old enough to be your grandmother, but your motivation has worked for me. I'm making progress...so much so that I can get rid of 2 dressers in my bedroom. OK, the bedroom is large and there is room for both dressers, but it will seem huge once that furniture is gone. Who knew that once I got rid of excess clothing everything in those drawers would fit into my walk in closet? The only downside is that I'm having a terrible time getting the trash can to the street!

Donating "good stuff" you're not using is GOOD, I keep reminding myself because 1) you get it out of the house 2) rather than it sitting at the back of a cupboard, it is available to someone who needs it or loved it. 3) you can raise money for the charity you donated it to, while you can get a "warm & fuzzy" feeling about it! "But but it's a GOOD BOX" ... welcome to a middle-aged mindset! My best time to declutter? The day before my bin/ recycling collection happens (Friday) - once they've been I can't retrieve them!

My Mom passed the week I turned 26 in 2002 & my Dad passed in 2013 (right before Christmas when I was 37). After he was gone, I realized that I had been hanging onto sentimental items that they wouldn't have wanted me to hang onto. After a lot of soul searching, deep digging and letting go of a lot of hurt in anticipation of letting the stuff go - I came to the realization that the stuff I was dragging around was dragging me down & keeping it would not bring them back. I know that they would not want that for me and I deserve to not have to carry that load anymore. Life changing I tell you! Not for the faint of heart & not until you are really & truly ready but totally worth it! Now, I only have the things I absolutely love and cannot live without (that aren't unloved clutter.) Night & day is not a stark enough comparison for the difference... Heather xo

So I saved all this Stuff for my daughter thinking she would want all of her Stuff! She moved to New York out of college, eventually met her husband and never moved back home. So now 20 yrs later I am still saving this Stuff! last visit with children now, I asked her do you want to go thru your Stuff? She said what Stuff?! (Am I crazy , I think so!) Everything she went thru , she looked at her husband ,only to ask him "should I keep this". Gosh I am crazy! That was it, I learned a lesson . So , i guess its time to donate her Abercrombie and Fitch high school sweaters! Although maybe her girls would want them, after all they are vintage!

I have been dealing with physical health and mental health issues for 12 years and more. To add to it my teen daughter had mental health issues for 5 years plus some physical health issues and it has been so difficult that my once perfect home became a total disaster with not a single space that is clean and tidy. I lost all friends and have become alone and lonely and staying home all the time. I want to have friends but I have been embarrassed to even have anyone over. And now my daughter has made new friends but I am struggling to still get over the disaster. But your videos have been motivating me a little whenever my mental health and physical health align for the day and trying to tackle one space one tiny area at a time. I hope one day I will have my perfect home again. I went from being a perfectionist with OCD to becoming this at this point in my life. I hope one day I will overcome and my daughter can have her friends over. 😢😢😢. Thanks for your videos it helps so much. And one day I can actually get to do things that I actually want to do.

1 hour is a lot and if your entire family helps it can make a huge difference! I have a family of 4. My kids are still young but fully capable of helping. I ask for 20 minutes of family working (I don't use a timer because one child is very literal) but I don't think it ever has taken much more than 20 minutes. And they all agree it feels better ❤

We were taught as a child to keep all the boxes that everything came in in case we had to take it back or in case we had to take it. It's like you say, but we were trained to do that

Just a mini victy…I declutterred my underwear drawer!..lol… bras that don’t fit anymore panties that were adorable but are too small. They were someday panties no nightgowns well worn when I have plenty of nice ones slips for crêpes sake slips nobody wears slips anymore, but they were in such nice condition. oh well out they went out of my one underwear drawer. I took a stack of stuff about 10 inches high in good condition except for the old night pounds, and in the donation box they went. It is a start now for the nightstand drawer with all the millions of gift lotions and creams. Thank you dear by the way, I 81 so you can imagine my stash.

Such a motivating video . I had it on loud as I was filling a bag with rubbish for the bin. Thank you 😊 I don’t have a garage or a basement or a loft. Just a shed. Mind you ,that’s rather full. I found that not having those spaces means that I can’t store stuff that I don’t need. Mind I still have stuff I don’t need, particularly in my bedroom. It tends to be my dump area, as only I see it. So I’m trying to believe that I deserve a nice tidy bedroom, and am doing it gradually. Listening to you and others tips for motivation and tips. This particular video is brilliant. X

I came to the conclusion before i saw this video that the process i have been going through (since a divorce) has been a lot. I have a lot of to do projects that were left unfinished or halfassed by my ex that i have been working on since. And i realized today the emotional, mental, and physical toll all of these things have taken on me. Whether i do tackle them or not it does. When i tackle, i start feeling a lot of anger towards my ex for his stupidity or incompetence. If i dont tackle it, it feels depressing bc it is a weight on me. Both ways. I really enjoyed this today. It helped inspire me a bit. Ive been in the process of letting go, decluttering, and organizing my house since my divorce. It has been really hard but the closer i get to done, the more free i start feeling. I really think people underestimate our environment and the toll it takes on us and our energy ans even mental health.

Hey Cas I wish you were much closer than Canada. I catch myself nodding when I hear you saying certain things like "stuff shuffling" etc. I find myself searching for important docs like "death certificates" etc and for the life of me I can remember where I put them. I've decided to buy the red folder and as I find important docs put them in there and tell my kids if they need to find something important to just look for the RED FOLDER. Also the word I tend to use often is "AVALANCHE" when I'm digging in a closet.
