Excellent video. All you young guys who are sparring and consistently getting amped up and throwing harder and not smarter need to watch and learn.

Very good video 🙂 I've got a lot that works against me in sparring (generally working with people 20+ pounds heavier since I'm one of the smallest people at my gym, only been training intensively for about 15 months, on the old side at nearing 40), but I've had enough life experiences with real danger that I'm also generally quite calm and thoughtful, so I'm able to survive (and occasionally push/punish) against the more experienced competitive fighters and can be an incredible wall of frustration for the newer people 😅

This one of the most interesting topics in contact sport (at least for me), but also there very small quantity information about it in internet at all. So, if will be more information regarding this topic - it will be always interesting and useful.

Fight IQ is the ability to moderate your reflexes and reaction time with mid fight adjusts and predictions. If you fight purely on instinct, reaction time and sink to your training, you will move faster, more efficiently but become exploitable. If you think too much and try to plan things, you end up not fighting well enough. You gotta do both, and softer technical sparring is where you develop both aspects. You drill the moves and then you spar to apply. You shadow box to write a sort of preprogrammed sequence and then you spar to apply and learn to make mid fight adjustments.

Amazing video as always Gabriel, this was exactly what I needed, to think better in sparring, I do not get all angry and that, I just get confused, while comboing up sometimes, for no reason, after this video, I think, and I know, I will perform better, thank you so much Gabriel, I got sparring tomorrow, this was perfect for me!🎉

Hey Gabriel, how can I work on staying calm in a fight and especially under pressure? I have a big problem with heavy punches, because I get easily overwhelmed by them. Also thank you very much for all the content you put out, I watch all of it and I really enjoy it too.

Realize its inevitably part of the sport we love and that the thing that will make you the safest is to train the proper defense and have faith in your abilities. Face adversity head on and youll surprise yourself, especially when you walk away okay and a better fighter for it.

Does your coach tell everyone to go light to the head and occasionally supervise sparring? Try asking your partner this "let's go light and technical" if he continues going hard, get your coach to back you, if not, may be best to find a new gym. It may be difficult to say you won't spar certain people. I once told a new guy he was going to hard, he disagreed and i insisted, he also compained that i clinched him, he said "there no hugging" hahah, i didnt see him again after that. The trouble is i cant say this to a someone thats been at the gym longer than me.
