I think a more appropriate threat would be "He's going to be the next body that I embalm! And I may or may not do I decent job!" Since no bodies are actually buried at his house.

Yes, that IS so typical of young children of single parents(divorced or widowed), and especially in the case of two things it seems:1. When the kid is an only child(like Vada), simply because the kid is so used to things being simply “parent and child” and that’s the way the kid likes it, (even when their single parent is widowed) and second-simply because the kid is YOUNG, too young to understand the facts of life-that in the case of divorce, the reason couples who get a divorce do so is in general the marriage is not working out(even if on friendly terms). And in the case of a widowed parent, well-even if a widowed parent remarrying may also spell “disruptions” in the household (as far as the kid or kids are concerned), such as a stepparent (of course), and possibly “stepsiblings”, and maybe even “half siblings”(and maybe even MOVING), still what’s most important is that the kid or kids have to be totally unselfish by thinking of their single parent, (widowed or divorced, usually), who “is in the mood for love,” in the case of a divorced parent, “while the kid or kids still belong to both the divorced man and woman in question, the man and woman are no longer husband and wife and have no desire to be again, and it’s something the kids must learn to live with.” And in the case of a widowed parent, “loving someone who’s in heaven isn’t nearly as satisfying,” hence why the kids’ widowed parent moves on if they meet someone single who likes them and whom the parent likes and they fall in love and decide to get married. It’s all about considering the parent’s happiness first.

Louis Winthrope changed his name and went into the funeral business after breaking up with Ophelia and returning to the states with his remaining stock while Ophelia changed her name to Shelley and got married after finishing beauty school and working at her husband's salon in Detroit. Shelley got a divorce and came back to Pennsylvania to look for Louis but found out his name is now Harry Sultenfuss having been married and widowed and burying his wife and surviving his daughter and mother. Seeking a beautician in the funeral home, Louis (Harry) hired her on a probationary period conditional of 2 things 1 Shelley must agree to keep their dating story from Vada and 2 remain professional around the funeral home! Having no obligation to the conditional terms of the verbal agreement, Shelley stayed in her divorcee's motorhome to avoid breaching any conditional terms by Harry and revealing to Vada her true love relationship with Harry. Vada is however, a smart young lady and noticed Shelley and her intentions right from the start, and asked her father Harry who is Shelley and why is she around the funeral home. Hurting for her mother's absence in her life and seeing right through Shelley, Vada gives her the cold shoulder and continues to compete with her to have Harry get rid of Shelley. Though Shelley's past was supposed to have Harry think twice of keeping Shelley around, instead Harry let Louis Winthrope out of the bag and took care of Shelley's divorcee threatening him to be gone or he will make sure he stays gone; given the profession Harry (Louis) is in now invested from his many stocks and bonds he achieved as a broker in Philadelphia. Shelley admires him for it, as she took him on dates and invited him back for a nightcap at the motorhome. Vada had her change of life and Shelley knew of it as she is a lady herself. Shelley accepts Vada as Vada cons Shelley by sneaking into her stash of cash for a poetry class Harry refuses to pay for after having many other failed investments into her future. Shelley interaction with Harry becomes rocky because Shelley is acknowledging Vada's need for her father in her life more than ever which leads to their first lover's quarrel since they had back in Philadelphia when she helped saved his former career. After accepting Vada's criminal act, Shelley continues to mentor her throughout life, even counseling her through the loss of Thomas J. who ranned away from home again and changing his name from Kevin McCallister this time taking a wrong flight to Philadelphia and riding out to a couple in search of having a child in the home themselves. Little did they know that he was deemed a runaway nor knew of this allergies to honeybees yet have the intentions of sheltering him and just before starting him through the adoption process; he never has the opportunity make it back home after finding Vada's mood ring stepping on a downed beehive. Shelley admires Vada's mood and still extends her love and kindness to her and later down the years, has been an amazing influence in her life even when Harry and her sat down with Vada to inform her they're engaged and will be having a sibling also!

Harry was defending Shelly and protecting her from her jealous ex-husband by punching Danny in the stomach. Also, what happens to Phil? He sort of disappears after the 4th July barbeque and isn't seen or mentioned for the rest of the film. He does appear in My Girl 2 though and carries a lot of the plot.

I have never understood why Danny (Shelly's ex-husband) wanted the camper van because in the divorce settlement, he got to keep their Mustang car and Shelly got to keep the camper van. I have always guessed that Danny wanted to sell the camper van, as he thought it was worth a lot of money. He might have even fallen on hard times and thought that he was going to get a good price for it from a potential buyer. That is probably why he tracked Shelly down and demanded the keys from her.

  • @afriendofbean

@Ross Hendrick Yes, Danny kind of was hurting Shelley physically which is why Harry punched Danny in the stomach. Also yes, maybe after this July 4th barbecue, Phil had his things packed and moved to Los Angeles since Shelley mentioned that Phil wanted a change which is why he moved to Los Angeles and probably wanted to live in the area where his sister-in-law Maggie (Harry's ex-wife) used to live which is why Phil is more of a main character on "My Girl 2" than Harry and Shelley were.

Considering I saw Dan A in Ghostbusters first, seeing him play a role like this, convincingly was impressive. I liked this movie but i can't watch it very often for various reasons, esp the tragedy towards the end- for those who haven't seen it, sorry if I spoiled anything) It does have some funny scenes, but some seem more forced and almost unintential. Plus I've dealt with adults in the recent past who behave like Vada so now it's a little too relatable for me. sorry folks, just being honest.
