The Story:
In the summer of 2008, when we set out to film, it was another New Orleans day. A sure sign was the radiating humidity that made your entire body feel like it was covered in a sort of sweaty film. Once you get past the initial fear of the inevitable grime and heat, you feel a certain energy or "atmosphere"- like a kid throwing himself without reserve into a mud fight.
We had an idea: ask as many people as possible the same question. We didn't know exactly why- I guess we were hoping to expose a slice of human emotion (maybe). Just the simple act of reaching out and asking the question is such a enthralling experience in itself. So go ahead, ask yourself.....

Some of these were so touching "Our adoption to go through" ,"I want my son back" :(
"get my son back" literally caught me other than the other answers
It’s crazy seeing this compared to the social media equivalent of today that’s done by so many different people… This was ahead of its time. Enjoy the time capsule to 2008
By the end of the day I wish I could hug my dad and tell him how much I miss him every day of my life.
I wish everyone would turn in to zombies except me and a few survivors.

I wish one of the survivors your stuck with is Justine Bieber
50 people - the number doesn't reallly count. it's not about the 50 but about the entire 6 billion (or what ever number we've reached today). all of them with their own little universe that lacks a part. and they want it back. these people are so humane in their looks , their wishes, their dreams ... and ttheir generosity to share their world with us and the director. that question is like... someone really cares. truly moving. great film, great portraits, great music.Bravo!
It wouldn't have to be euphoria 24/7, but I would wish for nothing but an infinite variety of positive experiences to exist. That would cover it all.
I wish this world to be a very happy and prosperous place to live in this universe Not just for humans but for all other living species too...
AMAZING. To encounter strangers and ask them such a personal and meaningful question, then send them on their way and never see them again..what a beautiful concept!
Wow, some of these answers, along with this unbelievable music, brought me to tears...
To wake up, to rest, and to have someone I love back in my life. Beautiful. That was one of the best collection of moments I've seen in awhile.
In 1882, Lev Tolstoy published his books "A Confession" and "What I believe". It is amazing to see how we have all been asking ourselves deep questions and how we have nothing else but shallow answers. Well, not all of us, some have been hurt by life - it is them who behold the true answer. Like that man @ 5:44
What amazes me is that although most people answer with a boring generic thing like being a millionaire or being happy, one out of fifty blow my mind by saying "to wake up". People are so dull, and yet sometimes you come across someone who actually knows what it means to be a human being.
Very simple, but very...pause-worthy. I love that the ppl actually walked away...to REALLY think about their answer to that question.
The guy who said "my son back" made me start crying. You can't get a more honest answer than that.
I work at a coffee shop and so I have countless micro-encounters with people every day. Too many people end up being in a rush or come off as rude and it's hard not to become cynical eventually. But this video makes me remember that people are unique and all have their own personal aspirations and dreams. It reminds me that humans are human. Thank you for making this.
The most value thing about this video I think is the fact that shows us what people wish during the 21st century, what is their mentality. Pretty simple, I will say, and pretty selfish too. This video will be more meaningful 100 years from now.
i like their shy smiles and the different ways they look into the camera. but more than that I like the little moments when their face goes unguarded and you can briefly see a little of what's underneath.
personally i liked the one who said, "i wish a nice lady would join me smoking a cigar in the cigar store" it really gets down to human essence and the simple pleasures of life, if sitting down with someone and smoking a cigar is really what makes him happy, then good for him for knowing it, knowing what he really wants
I really loved how you started out with a dark/mild green colour and the whole time shot in a light brown earth colour it really brought out all the highlights in the peoples faces and gave a sense that these people aren't really anything special but they still have dreams like the rest of us. BRAVO!
I really like this, for a couple of reasons. Tons of people say what they want all the time, but when you ask them, they're stumped. A wide variety of people, different personalities. But most wouldn't do things for themselves. Really good question.
I love things like this. That show us all the different sides of humanity.
I love this video. It inspires me to get out and keep making my own films.
"i wish i'll get married to her" INNOCENCE. SWEET.
whenever i start to loose faith in humanity, i come across something like this. and it comes back again.
I honestly don't understand how you could dislike this.
A real good watch of this film can brighten up almost anybody's day. I know it did mine.
What a wonderful question... beautiful film... very thought provoking
Such a wise question. You could see the ones who shared personally were glad to be asked and listened to. We can choose daily, live intentionally, and share love happiness, and yes, peace, with others. You made some real connections, and we can see it in their eyes.
this opened my eyes , it's show the beauty in people beyond the aspects , .Thanks
I love this film. Thank you.
I'm in love with these people now. How sweet and well-played
I can't stop watching this
Thank you! Who ever guessed that a tear would make someone's day beautiful...? Thank you!
i wish my life would go back to being as simple and fun as when i was 8 years old
i love short films... well i guess it depends on which ones, but the ones like this one. they show how real it is and so many things people could relate too.. ugh it makes me feel nostalgic and sad T_T
probably one of the best videos i've seen on youtube in a long time.
It's fun to hear that everyone has their own little wishes.. That everyone takes a moment to look at the sky and kinda got blank then just say whatever comes first in their minds But when you think back, it is their happiness.. And now I wish I could grant those simple pleasures in life.. This video made a difference to my life.. thank you...
I have watch this video around 10 times in the pass 3 days and I love it ^_^ Every day I see it I think about what do I wish to happen by the end of the day and how can I make it happen.
I think that this kind of questions are the ones that sometimes make people think more about what are they doing in their lives.
Great depth of field. . .really allows the viewer to see the subjects return to the background. Very inspirational.
"Gotta feel it to heal it"............ Good luck on your path of healing.. Love yourself
"My son back...". And then i start crying. He is the only one that trully wish what he said.
When he said: to have my son back, I could'nt help but cry.
this just make me want to be happy always and enjoy life hearing to music, just see others smile GREAT
This was inspireing. To see so many people with so many different wishes kindof gives you a new perspective on this world as a whole.
dude you are one amazing director. you and your crew are freakin' amazing.
this is incredible. i dont know how i stumbled upon this but it really brightened my day so thank you. what a burst of humanity, so moving and delightful. im truly inspired, impressed, intrigued, provoked and eotional, continue the great job. btw, love the light talking in the background and the goodbyes at the end. awesome!!
Beautiful... Simple but says everything... Thank you
This film is beautiful in all of its simplicity. Very real and true. Good jobs guys!
I LOVE it .. Great Movie
Absolutely fantastic. The answer "my son back" made me cry. Well done. god question good people. Oh.. and that girl with a beautiful smile, she was very shiny. Actually everyone was shiny.
Juste merci pour ce moment ...
I used to think like that too, but have you ever heard the saying "Hurt people hurt people"? It`s true. If everyone was happy, they wouldn`t feel the need to make others suffer. So it`s actually not bullshit.
When the man said "To have my son back.." very moving GREAT video. good job
crazy how much emotion can be in like 3 seconds of film, my son back,
this was great. i just fell in love with short films!
As soon as I heard the question I said "World Peace" out loud, and this hope flooded me, I believed for a few short seconds that each of the fifty were good to say PEACE PEACE... and instead to be a millionaire came out, three times a million dollars. I suppose there's honesty in that. And so isn't it sad that's were we are at, those insignificant things which really don't matter, wouldn't matter if there was Peace...
Such an insight into what is on these peoples' minds, love it!
Simple and Beautiful. Thank you..
Beautiful. Great Film
I believe this is my favorite video on all of youtube. It's really beautiful, and just so... thought-provoking. Fantastic job.
"I want my son back." ... left me without words.
Its the music that really gets this film going
Thank you for this great work of art!
I might be attending Tulane University next year, and this video just gave me the most beautiful perspective on the city I may soon call home that I have yet to find.
love this!!!
Just one thing to say: This is the best i have seen on youtube so far.
I would wish that for one day, some one some where in the world. Got the blessing of a friend when they need it the most. Thats what i wish, It only takes one friend to save a life. We're all in this together.
this is such a beautiful film!
this is an amazing video.. this is a look into the human condition and the needs and wants of a common man. It shows the concerns of the old and the young, the rich and the poor and how all humanity is linked by a single desire, happiness.
The Specs: Shot on an HV20 with a 35mm adapter, Worley/DIY. Indifocus rails on a Matthews M25 tripod. Nikon e series 50mm 1.8. Shure PG81 into a Zoom h4 unit. Thanks for watching!
Just one more day with my grandpa, he was my best friend as a little kid and died of cancer when I was only 5.
it is so nice to see how some people wish something big and some people something so small... also a nice question , i like it ...
literally the best video i have ever watched. i love love love it so so so much! amazing job!
very touched by this.........thank you
I love this...
The artist is Four Tet, all songs from the album "Rounds". Thanks for watching!
Watching this video made me realise I will never be truely happy. I want everyone in the world to be happy but that's impossible. Life just isn't setup that way....the way things are. We need to change.
Love the atmosphere, the elements of authenticity and the beauty of every second. We got so inspired that decided to make our own version in Estonia - please check it out "Fifty People, One Question | Estonia, Tartu"
great question, good music and the other cool things made this so great !
absolutely wonderful, i feel like doing this myself in my hometown. (detroit area MI)
something about this film... got me so emotional! I dunno wat... Mayb it wuz at the end when all those people who wer engaged in conversation just left... to move on with their lives... n thts all their significance is! Maybe it was the music! Very very profound piece of work! Amazing!
"I wish that I was married to her" SO ADORABLE!!!!!

I love seeing all these people... I love the answers. This is such a great video.
"for today to have been perfect" I love that.
great movie. it was quite inspiring!
Music went perfect with the images, powerful and moving. Editing was done beautifully, leaves you with a good feeling at the end of the film. 5 stars!
good film. need more like it. keep it real!!!
i love this.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AMAZING!
exactly. I agree with the first one cause I've been through it and I think that there is someone who thinks the same toward me.
Yes!
Great job guys!! I love the editing, the music - which makes you mellow and warm fuzziness in the video which makes the people and their views so beautiful. Wish to see more of these :)
This is very inspiring. I t doesnt really have any deep or hidden meaning, but it feels like it does. It just amazes me and somehow shows how easy it is to reach out and infkuence other peoples life. I think you did accomplish to expose a bit of humanity in this.
Wow. I love this. Seriously.
So simple yet so powerful, very wonderful, keep up the good work!
this just made MY day! it's just perfect!
i agree with the last one! :) and the second to last one almost made me cry.
