The general at 1:57 is a completely different man than the one at 3:02. He was in charge completely. He knew his procedure, his ship, its capacities, and believed be was proudly protecting his citizens- *and no doubts.* Suddenly after the backfire, less than a about a minute later, he was scared, small, and desperate. He asked his second in command with a whimper if he had anything else. He knew they did not. His mind was being influenced, perhaps controlled, from the beginning. The man who wanted to destroy the sphere is when the sphere wanted him to be aggressive, to attack, and to make it stronger. The second one was a helpless, paralyzed prey. General Staedart was dead the moment he pulled his ship into formation.

Interesting how this evil in the movie is acting exactly like Satan in the real world. When the military folks decided to shoot at it, it hardened its surface, why? To deceive people to think that there is something fragile inside of it that could be destroyed by the attack and people thought they can penetrate the surface and destroy it, while in reality there were no options for these people to destroy it, they were doomed to only make it stronger. In the same way in this real world so many people, after being influenced by dark forces, do different rituals thinking it will protect them and the first thing they feel after a ritual can be a sense of peace and calmness, so they calm down and think they got the problem fixed, without realizing that Satan is still owning them and waiting to get them to hell.

That is actually a very threatening concept, compared to current sci-if antagonist anyway. A giant orb of fire, fury, and malice, that instigates aggression upon its observers. It’s victims attack, and the orb feeds off of this aggression. Once it gets what it wants, it leaves the victims helpless and afraid, then it finishes what it started.

I get the feeling part of the reason the general had no doubts was a kind of effect of the sphere. In the end, he was bleeding from his head, like Zorg had been. The General wasn't paralyzed by normal standards, The Great Evil was so powerful and evil it could affect the minds of any beings presumably into a state of paralysis and fear, and making them unable to speak. It's a bit the same with the macroverse from IT, where any humans that witness it goes into a catatonic state and will go insane as they can't comprehend what it is. That's the amazing yet horrifying part of seeing something that you are not able to understand or witness / see.

This whole movie is very cryptic. It is based on very interesting material called "KOLBRIN BIBLE". The name of the main character reflects it, as phonetically they are almost identical. This material is sort of a collection of chronicles left by the witnesses and survivors of something unimaginable to us, something that shook the world. Different cultures described the same thing, as a glowing orb, bigger than a moon, came from nowhere and bringing disasters to earth. Sumerians called that planet Nibiru, and today it is very famous among many groups of people seeking truth.
