Fields Parameter in Action I Practical Examples

Ғылым және технология

In this video I show you all you need to know to start using fields parameters in Power BI. This new type of parameter enables you to choose from different fields or measures. When used on the axis, legend or values the user can toggle between the different fields that you add to the parameter.

    Very entertaining and informative as always. I was looking at using parameters for a specific application to use for a radar chart.I have a data table that contains a first column with dimensions and about 100 columns with the product names that contain the score against each dimension. What I am trying to do is to create a 2 column table from that would contain the dimensions in the first column. and the desired selected product in the second table to set up the radar chart.... Hopefully this will get your creative juices going for another great video helping me in the process 🙂

    Great video! Another awesome feature with the Fields Parameters is that it allows you to create column names based on an expression, for example in the matrix visual. This works by simply replacing the column name text in the Field Parameter DAX expression with an expression or measure of your choice. This has so many applications. This was absolutly mindblowing for me since I have been searching for a way to do this for quite a while.

    Really nice video. I've implemented these into a report I'm developing, which has helped as you say Bas to help eliminate calculation groups, bookmarks, edit interactions to change a graph dynamically. Two thins I couldn't get fully working was dynamically titles, as it displays the table name of my field parameters. The second was a dropped the field para ammeter into a matrix which dynamically updated values in the table with the selected measures in the slicer but my previous conditional formatting for my previous tables are not working in the field parameter version of the table.

    Fantastic as always, Bas! My reports are going to look so much better with less effort! Edit: it works brilliantly to switch between displaying columns as Years, Quarters, or Months in a matrix visual. No more switching to 'columns' then 'go to next level' using the Matrix options!!

  • @alicedwonderland7733

    @alicedwonderland7733

    I can't see the option of changing the measure names for that particular visual though. That's a downside. Edit: I can! In the Prm, just change what's between the quotation marks! Also, you can choose to display EACH individual value as thousands of millions or with no units! This is the BEST update in a very long time!!!

I am implementing the Top 10 Sales calculated column, but I am afraid the problem with the calculated columns is that it does not get filter context, so it does not dynamically calculates the Top 10 products, when the user filters Local, Products Category or Date table... It's so spectacular that I want to implement it as far as I find how to. Thanks !

    Brilliant - and you found a way to make it complicated again at the end!! I know you are not the Microsoft feedback board, but it would have been nice if we could edit the Field Parameter as easily as we can create it - Lo Code. Soon perhaps - good to get this thing out. Interesting - the parameter options are shown in a conventional filter visual. If you hit the rubber (clear the filter) sometimes you can get all the parameters at once. So for an example a column Chart allowed me to show all 5 different Sales/Quantity/profit measures I had made, each with its own column in a group for that product category. Which could be cool for the right moment. Whereas the parameter for dimensions: category/color/model would only give me one option only - defaulting to the first in the list. And I couldn't find a way to get just 2 or 3 Sales measures - it was all 5 or just 1.

    Hi Bas. This is HUGE - thanks for the heads-up and suggested use cases for the FIELDS PARAMETER feature that has been added. I have a question for you and hopefully you are able to provide a solution. I have successfully managed to implement the parameter selection as you have shown in the demo. What I am trying to do is the following scenario. I have one parameter for the "numerator" and a second parameter for the "denominator". What I would like to do is to use the results of "numerator" divided by the "denominator" in a separate measure. I have tried a few options but i seem to come up with the following error message: Column [NumeratorParameter] is part of composite key, but not all columns of the composite key are included in the expression or its dependent expression. In the mean time Have a POWER day 💪

    I've previously used bookmarks for changing axes and values. Do calculation groups have a significant use case now for another purpose or are they not really useful now? (Should I learn about them?)

    Great video! Not a big fan of a calculated column for a top 10 of products though! Works for the example, but in most cases might give wrong insights with multiple active filters on your canvas.

    Thanks, again, for a very informative and clear video! Does this only work with text type fields? I have a table and would like the user to switch between showing prices or margins, for example. It kind of works, but shows the data only as text (therefore, does not allow number formatting).
