Fields Parameter in Action I Practical Examples
Ғылым және технология
In this video I show you all you need to know to start using fields parameters in Power BI. This new type of parameter enables you to choose from different fields or measures. When used on the axis, legend or values the user can toggle between the different fields that you add to the parameter.

this is the best update from power bi . I used to do this using Dax and Selected Values etc. but field parameters is a game changer! Thanks for the great content!
Thanks Bas! I was waiting for an easy way to this for sooo long, it is going to save me a lot of time! Thanks for being so fast to show us this new feature!
Still my favorite Power BI channel and timely advice with the update that just came out. This is going to make so many of my reports better in combination with the new Page/Bookmark navigator.
Man glad I watched this video! This is a game changer to make everyone’s lives easier! 😃 also allows anyone to consolidate multiple visuals/pages into one!
Beautiful presentation of this video Bas. You're truly are in this business to help us and teach us Power BI. I'm so glad that your video was the first after Microsoft's update. Thank you so much Bas
I love the way you present these videos Bas. I have to watch them a few times to get all the information out of them as they're so rich in value. Brilliant stuff.

Spectacular use cases and Ideas on how to adjust and expand those uses!! Thank you!
This really seems to be a game changer from Power BI. Absolutely required and very very useful to reduce the complexity from the reports

Very entertaining and informative as always. I was looking at using parameters for a specific application to use for a radar chart.I have a data table that contains a first column with dimensions and about 100 columns with the product names that contain the score against each dimension. What I am trying to do is to create a 2 column table from that would contain the dimensions in the first column. and the desired selected product in the second table to set up the radar chart.... Hopefully this will get your creative juices going for another great video helping me in the process 🙂
I’m consistently sharing your videos with my team. You are a fantastic educator.

Great video! Another awesome feature with the Fields Parameters is that it allows you to create column names based on an expression, for example in the matrix visual. This works by simply replacing the column name text in the Field Parameter DAX expression with an expression or measure of your choice. This has so many applications. This was absolutly mindblowing for me since I have been searching for a way to do this for quite a while.

After testing it a bit, I found that it is a bit more restricted than I anticipated. For example, I couldn't get SELECTEDVALUE() to work, but the CALCULATE() function seems to work fine in the cases I tested.

Really nice video. I've implemented these into a report I'm developing, which has helped as you say Bas to help eliminate calculation groups, bookmarks, edit interactions to change a graph dynamically. Two thins I couldn't get fully working was dynamically titles, as it displays the table name of my field parameters. The second was a dropped the field para ammeter into a matrix which dynamically updated values in the table with the selected measures in the slicer but my previous conditional formatting for my previous tables are not working in the field parameter version of the table.
This is impressive!!!! It was tough using selected value and creating tables or using bookmarks to achieve this. This is life saver. 👍 I am your top fan now 😎

Fantastic as always, Bas! My reports are going to look so much better with less effort! Edit: it works brilliantly to switch between displaying columns as Years, Quarters, or Months in a matrix visual. No more switching to 'columns' then 'go to next level' using the Matrix options!!

I can't see the option of changing the measure names for that particular visual though. That's a downside. Edit: I can! In the Prm, just change what's between the quotation marks! Also, you can choose to display EACH individual value as thousands of millions or with no units! This is the BEST update in a very long time!!!
Exactly the solution I needed. Thank You.
This is incredible just an awesome and clean video Bas!. Dont give up and keep it up, we appreciate all your content :) :) :)

Another great video. Explained simply and what an amazing new feature. Unfortunately I am on Power BI Desktop (not cloud) and this is not included in the May 2022 release. At least that means I can wait 6 months before I need to re-write every report I have ever built :-)
Fijn om bij te leren van een Belg ! Geweldige videos
Great vid as usual mate. The only downside to this is ordering of the X axis. If I'm switching between weeks and days and periods, it forgets which order to put them in (other than for date).
really amazing, thank you for a great video. How would you keep a custom sort on the parameter on the x-axis? Sorting gets reset every time a slicer selection is changed
Love this parameter wow I love this channel thanks Bas
Great tutorial! Keep on the good work, Bas.
Thanks Bas, great video as always. Congrats for your work is remarkable. I am implementing the Top 10 Sales calculated column, but I am afraid the problem with the calculated columns is that it does not get filter context, so it does not dynamically calculates the Top 10 products, when the user filters Local, Products Category or Date table... It's so spectacular that I want to implement it as far as I find how to. Thanks !
Really helpful, I learned a lot thank you ❤
Thank you so much!
This is amazing feature!🪄🪄🪄Thanks for sharing.🙂
Useful Video. Thank you Bas
Great content! Do you know if it's possible to create conditional formatting based on a field parameter? So that the conditional formatting applies to each measure that is selected? Not seeing that option right now :-/
Brilliant - and you found a way to make it complicated again at the end!! I know you are not the Microsoft feedback board, but it would have been nice if we could edit the Field Parameter as easily as we can create it - Lo Code. Soon perhaps - good to get this thing out. Interesting - the parameter options are shown in a conventional filter visual. If you hit the rubber (clear the filter) sometimes you can get all the parameters at once. So for an example a column Chart allowed me to show all 5 different Sales/Quantity/profit measures I had made, each with its own column in a group for that product category. Which could be cool for the right moment. Whereas the parameter for dimensions: category/color/model would only give me one option only - defaulting to the first in the list. And I couldn't find a way to get just 2 or 3 Sales measures - it was all 5 or just 1.
@HowtoPowerBI
2 жыл бұрын
100% agree - hope somebody from microsoft reads this ;) .. I think you are able to select as many measures as you want from the parameter, not sure why it doesnt work for you.

Thanks for amazing videos. Since it is not easy to see numbers of screen, it will be nice if you allocate more or 100% of the screen area to the report instead of on you. Again, thanks for sharig your knowledge.
Hi Bas. This is HUGE - thanks for the heads-up and suggested use cases for the FIELDS PARAMETER feature that has been added. I have a question for you and hopefully you are able to provide a solution. I have successfully managed to implement the parameter selection as you have shown in the demo. What I am trying to do is the following scenario. I have one parameter for the "numerator" and a second parameter for the "denominator". What I would like to do is to use the results of "numerator" divided by the "denominator" in a separate measure. I have tried a few options but i seem to come up with the following error message: Column [NumeratorParameter] is part of composite key, but not all columns of the composite key are included in the expression or its dependent expression. In the mean time Have a POWER day 💪
Nice explanation 👌
I've previously used bookmarks for changing axes and values. Do calculation groups have a significant use case now for another purpose or are they not really useful now? (Should I learn about them?)
Thanks Bas, it really is a game changer feature.

Thanks, again, for a very informative and clear video! Does this only work with text type fields? I have a table and would like the user to switch between showing prices or margins, for example. It kind of works, but shows the data only as text (therefore, does not allow number formatting).
Awesome presentation Bas, it will help in one of the projects which are in the design stage.
