    Hi Mat, I really enjoyed seeing you photograph Rock House! I grew up in Columbus, got my photography degree from Ohio State and worked in a commercial photo studio in downtown Columbus for many years. More importantly, I spent a lot of time photographing the Hocking Hills in large format, including Rock House many times. Absolutely nothing better than heading out early after a fresh snowfall, aiming for the Hocking Hills, which I did on many happy occasions. You did very well on that day for sure. I never really got anything I was happy with from inside Rock House. I tried lots of compensating development but just never got the shadow detail I wanted. I'm very glad YT recommended your channel to me today. Subscribed! Take Care.

    Scott thank you so much for sharing your ties to Columbus and Hocking Hills! Which commercial studio did you work at? Also I'm right there with you on the shadows inside the Rock House. Even with a pyro staining developer, my best bet is gobs of overexposure and trying to tame highlights in development. Welcome to the channel!

    I love Rock House - your beautiful photos and great video brought back some nice memories. Last time I was in Hocking Hills my Canon dslr completely died - I ended up shooting 35mm Tri-X in my Minolta and 120 Portra in my Fuji GSW690III- the “Texas Leica”. It’s fun to see another photographers interpretation of a place I love with a different set up.

    I just spent a week in the desert. Drove down to the Valley of Fire and the Grand Canyon and spent a few days in Las Vegas. I really enjoyed the warm weather down there. Brought the 4x5 along but never shot it once. I did shoot 9 rolls of 120 in the Hasselblad. Got real lazy and sent them off to be developed at the darkroom. You put me to shame packing that 8x10 around.

  • @MatMarrash

    Thanks Terry, a big factor in handling the 8x10 kit is the cold weather. Hauling it around long enough heats you up, making the warmer climate hikes much, much worse IMO. A 4x5 and 120 kit is still a big haul for those parks!

    Great video and timely for a few questions that I've been wondering about...perhaps a topic for a future video: What kind of 'extremes' can one safely work under during the winter (ie temperatures)? I'm aware of the need to slowly bring the equipment down to the ambient temp and back up once inside, but how cold can the equipment (camera/film) safely work at? And perhaps a few tips on metering in a snowy environment. Cheers!

    Hi Jason and thanks for the questions. The coldest I've worked in with large format was -5 F and everything was fine except for my fingers and face! Film can handle much greater extremes than digital and probably the first thing to give out in extreme cold would be timing on a shutter. Metering is always something worth a revisit. Cheers!

    Great video Matt and I’m really enjoying the LFF series. When you are using a graduated filter how do you compensate on your meter reading as the effect of the filter is not uniform across the scene?

  • @MatMarrash

    @MatMarrash

    3 жыл бұрын

    Great question Nick! In this instance, the graduated filter is used to bring down the higher value of highlight areas on the right side of the photograph. Since none of the neutral parts of the filter are covering the darkest shadows with detail on the left of the photo, my exposure isn't changing at all. With B&W photography and The Zone System, placing your values for the shadow areas is the crucial step during exposure.

  • @MatMarrash

    @MatMarrash

    Thanks Bill! Reciprocity boils down to the limitations of film in handling very small amounts of exposure. Too little light available from super fast shutter speeds or from low available light yield diminishing returns. When certain films need 1 sec. or more exposure time, extra exposure is added to compensate for this "reciprocity failure". BTW, great topic suggestion!

  • @MatMarrash

    @MatMarrash

    3 жыл бұрын

    Great question Peter! Since I'm using a spot meter, the snow isn't impacting my exposure decisions too much. Most of what I'm looking for is total dynamic range (make sure it's not too large or too small) and what exposure I need to "place" my shadows on the appropriate Zone. One nice thing about the snow, is I can quickly meter it and find what exposure "places" them on Zone VII. My exposure I've found by placing shadows should be the same or longer than my highlight metered shot, otherwise grey snow occurs.

    Удивительно что эта пещера такая чистая, в России это было бы максимально грязное место 😲

    We are fortunate here that some of the more popular parks have rangers on staff that help enforce clean habits on the trails. Thanks!

    I was shooting 4x5 the last week and took a shot and found that I didn't get the film under the little rails and crushed it with the dark slide. :( RIP color film. Also I find that my holders seem to have sharper rails and it scrapes the film along the edges when loading. Any thoughts on fixes? Fine Sandpaper on the rails or get new holders?

    Thanks for the question Peter. Given how inexpensive modern 4x5 holders are (new and used), I'd recommend getting some new ones. Get some Toyo or Riteway plastic holders and you'll be good forever!

    This is something I'd like to know too, sounds like they might by older metal or wood and metal holders.

    Yes mine are older Riteway holders they are mostly plastic but have metal rails and came with the camera. Just kind of bites that there were 14 film holders that came with my camera.

    Why don't you use an actual stopwatch or timer?

    For the really long ones there's a stopwatch in play, though it may not show up on camera. ;)
