Field Bag Sew-Along Day 5: Assembling the Body of the Bag

Join us as we sew the Field Bag! This bag has become a cult classic in the knitting world and it's now available as a pattern for you to sew up on your own!
During this series we'll cover all aspects of making the Field Bag. This is a great series for anyone just starting out sewing with sewing and may need a bit of hand holding, and also for experienced sewers looking to pick up extra tips. We'll learn how to insert grommets, work with thick fabrics, and more!
In this lesson we'll be sewing up the gussets that form the shape of the bag. You'll finally get to see your Field Bag taking shape! We also cover tips for working with heavy fabrics, so if your machine is having trouble with your fabric this is a must watch.
You can purchase the Field Bag pattern on our website here in both PDF and Paper format: grainlinestudio.com/collectio...

thank you for the sew a long. It is super helpful when doing something new. The gusset finish on the bottom is the work of a magician! So neat, strong and very beautiful. Thrilled how this is coming together. Am gifting this bag so am really really happy with both the pattern and the tutorials. thank you

Great directions! I am following along with my printed directions and found an inconsistency in step 11. In the written directions, it says to fold the corners toward the right sides, but in the video, they are folded toward the back side. I followed along with the video. Not sure if it matters or if you caught it, but I was curious if one way is more correct. Thanks!

Either way will get you pretty much the same result but you're right, the instructions in the pattern are correct.

I was wondering if in doing the gusset it could be pressed before stitching, then pressed again after tucking the corner to help flatten the extra thickness before the final stitching -- to make that stitching easier.

You definitely can do that, it's an excellent idea! Steam will also help loosen up the fibers a bit.

Thank you for such a great sewalong! May I ask which Bernina model you have? My machine really struggled on those thick seams...I'm eyeing an upgrade. (I sew garments about 75% of the time and quilt 25%, so ideally I'll find a machine that would be good at both, but if I had to choose I'd want one that's excellent for garments.)

Of course! I have a B570 which happens to be the quilters edition. I love it for garment sewing!
