Ficus Bonsai tree care
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this video we explain how to care for your Ficus Bonsai tree. Watering, pruning, fertilizing - all these topics are discussed. Keeping a Ficus Bonsai alive is not a difficult task, but there are a few things you should be aware of. For more information, also check:
www.bonsaiempire.com/tree-spe...
Bonsai trees are planted in small pots with minimal space for water and nutrient reserves. That means you need to water and fertilize your tree regularly. Make sure your Bonsai gets plenty of light, water, and fertilize when needed and your tree is sure to thrive!
If you are not entirely sure about your tree species, you can use this guide to ID your Bonsai:

Few more tips~ ° After pruning your ficus don't keep in direct sun whether root or shoot pruning it is. ° shoot prune it in the spring bc after that the growing season will start. Don't prune it in the winters as the new shoots will be produced and they can't survive winters ° root prune them in the fall don't prune the larger roots (I pruned the roots of my ficus upto 90% including the tap roots and still it is surviving) I have a ficus religiosa with multiple trunks and heavy canopy
I really appreciate the quality of info and the simple format of this video. Thank you!

This was an informative video. I was gifted a ficus retusa at the start of this year, and it has been somehow growing even though I only water and it doesn’t get direct sunlight. But the part about pruning and repotting when the roots circle was useful to know. I don’t know much about plant care but I do enjoy watching my ficus grow.

Simple but useful guild. Ficus is the most common bonsai trees in my country, Viet Nam.
after my last bonsai died (17yo) i got a new one yesterday. i think i sadly killed the other one by forgetting to water and then i repot it(such mistakes, i knew to not do that but i panicked) i hope to give the new one the best life.

The Ficus retusa and Tiger bark are not separate species - they are the same thing. Full name is Ficus Microcarpa Retusa aka Tiger Bark Ficus.
@chuschusco
3 жыл бұрын

Hi there just asking a question I own a ficus retusa tree and it's been pruned when I bought it it but the only left 4 branches at the top of the tree.. such a shame really could have been a very nice bonsai so there's no lower branches I can see where it's been pruned all the way up the tree my question is is will I ever be able to grow lower branches on the tree ever again thank you...great vid btw

Did think of that tbh..thanks for reply...
When I water my Ficus Bonsai I usually use bottled water and I never use ice cold water, I use water that’s been out for a while, never water warm enough for coffee or tea.
I'm starting off with a ficus tree sapling. However, mine is a ficus benjamina of the 'Dutch Treat' variety, which doesn't seem to be mentioned in this video. Do the same methods still apply? Also, are shallow pots better than deeper ones?
@bonsaiempire
Жыл бұрын
Ficus benjamina is very common, great for bonsai and yes these guidelines all apply to Ficus benjamina, retusa, etc. A shallow pot looks nice on established bonsai, but if your goal is to develop you need growth and often that means a bigger pot. Hey guys, I need your help :D I recently bought a Ficus retusa and I just see so many different opinions on the internet. How should I water it? Should I put it in the shower and make the shower rain on it? Should I water it from the top so the whole plant gets wet every day? Thanks for any advice :)

This doesnt all matter that much - as long as the soil receives plenty water - we explain about the watering in this video.
@NickCADA

What I normally do is I water my ficus with water from a water bottle like Kirkland or Nestlé water, I allow the water to set at room temperature, never ice cube cold or as warm as water for coffee or tea, I don’t use any speciality watering can either, I simply use the bottle. If possible while watering it make sure to make a bowl or plate underneath that way if any dirt comes out you can put it directly inside of your bonsai again.
@NickCADA

By the way if you go with placing your bonsai inside of the sink method it’ll most likely be a waste of time on your part, for me I found that the way I mentioned above was definitely faster and easier.
I'd like to see unruly one so I can decide if I want to prune it or not

I live in texas where summers can get really hot (up to 100 degrees F or 38 C) is this too hot to keep the focus tree outdoors?
@bonsaiempire
Жыл бұрын
Well that should be fine - but make sure they dont dry out! Actually, Ficus like humidity so the Texas heat isn't optimal at all. Ideally, pick species that work in your local environment!
How about using a humidity sensor in order to timely watering?
@bonsaiempire

You could, I guess, I never tried
I added some additional soil to my pot & a week later it dropped 90% of its leaves. I was heartbroken but there's still green in the trunk so I'm hoping I can bring it back to life. What soil would you recommend? My apt doesn't get much light, maybe I should give it away.
@bonsaiempire
6 ай бұрын
The Ficus needs proper watering and lots of light - the rest is far less important.
Ficus can live from 5 degrees celsius (not 15) to whatever high....retusa is another variety, the one shown in this video is a microcarpa var. tigerbark....
Would you say it’s recommended to water it everyday? I know it depends on the weather etc but is is everyday approximately?
@bonsaiempire
5 ай бұрын
You answer your own question :) The weather is different every day so no - you can not water on a schedule. You really only can water on observation!
What kind of soil is best? Looks like the large example in the video is in dark and densely compact soil.

We recommend a non-organic mixture, that drains very well - www.bonsaiempire.com/basics/bonsai-care/bonsai-soil
I am very surprised to hear that ficus doesn’t like temperatures below 15 C. My ficuses (and I have a lot of them) have no problem with cold as long as it is not below zero.
@bonsaiempire
10 ай бұрын
Well, it is a tropical plant - so ideally you'd keep them a bit warmer. They will grow stronger. But good to hear you keep them healthy at lower temperatures. What do you do when it freezes?
@alexm9148

@@bonsaiempire thank you for your reply! I have been having ficuses for many years. In the past, when I was living in Greece, I had some big plants as outdoor plants in my balcony. The few times I would have temperatures below zero, I would take them inside the house, usually overnight, sometimes for a few days. Now I live in Sweden and for the last few years I have ficuses as indoor plants. Still, most of them I take outside for the summer since they seem to like it (it seems to improve their health) and some of them I leave outside until minimum temperature is around 5C. I know they can tolerate even lower temperatures but I avoid stressing them more than this so that they are not shocked by the change when moved.
Some of the leaves of my Ficus Bonsai tree have been gradually turning yellow. Do you know what could be the reason and if you have any suggestion?

what would be the max temp that they can thrive?!? will a 40/45C be too much?!? Also humidity can reach up 80% and hot. Can at this condition be outside?!?

Well thats hot! It would need a bit of shade in that case. But the humidity is great, more is better.
I was bought what I think is a Ficus Bonsai tree as a gift but unfortunately it appeared Dead on Arrival. A couple of years later it still looks dead with a lot of brown and crispy leaves but it doesn't drop them so I think it is alive - I have read they can often be wrongly assumed dead. Mine has never looked alive :( I'm thinking I should repot it into better quality soil, leave it in a spot that is bright but not in direct sunlight perhaps even under a Bell Cloche/humidity tent for a while. Good ideas to get it back to looking healthy?

Hi! Noobie here, I live in the Netherlands, its getting quite cold. The ficus bonsai is next to the window, and it is very humid there. I follow the watering schedule quite strictly but I have recently seen that the top layer of the soil has a white small bubble texture layer, as if fog was on it. What does this mean?? Also, I do not have any product to add to the bonsai, is it recommended? Thank you in advance for any kind of information.

Make sure to water on observation, not on a schedule. Winter means the tree will slow down its growth and hence, less water is needed. A liquid fertilizer would be good to apply.
