FHS at Home: Innovation in Action - Château de Lalande

French Heritage Society is thrilled to offer this virtual event series in partnership with our Young Patrons Circle, featuring intimate chats in English with dynamic château owners. As the ongoing pandemic has derailed the guest house and events businesses that support the restoration and continual upkeep of many historic properties, creative caretakers have taken advantage of a worldwide captive audience in need of escapism. Using KZread vlogs, Instagram posts, crowdfunding platforms, and even a British reality show, they have successfully garnered support for their mammoth projects while raising awareness of the wealth of French architectural and cultural heritage still in need of preservation.
Our first virtual chat on April 14th featured Stephanie Jarvis of Château de Lalande, the forerunner in the KZread restoration channel phenomenon. Her property, situated in the heart of the rural Centre-Val de Loire region and co-owned with two friends, dates from the 16th C. Having taken off in 2020, her KZread channel ‪@TheChateauDiaries‬ boasts 133,000 subscribers. With this large platform, Stephanie has also garnered support for her Patreon crowdfunding site. With over 2900 Patrons, she raises impressive monthly funds for restoration work and is listed in the top 400 Patreon accounts worldwide. The result of this incredible global support, as seen on her channel, have been inspiring as the necessary restoration work has moved forward by leaps and bounds this year. Stephanie discussed her successes in the larger context of how historic properties have been funded in the past, and how maverick models such as hers could inspire the future.

I've been watching Château Diaries for several years now. It's changed over time, but it's still entertaining and informing. It was during Château DIY when I was first introduced to Stephanie Jarvis and Château de Lalande. I'm eternally grateful to them for the countless hours of enjoyment I've received during a very difficult time and beyond. Isabelle and Percy, Nattie and Amaury, Annalise and Daniel Preston, Marie, Maria, Selmar, David, Philip, the Ians, Michael Petherick, Michael Potts, the Illusive Nick, Marie and Antoine, Kat and Hannie, Kirsty, Umbaline, Chantel and Steve, have all allowed us into their homes and their lives. Stephanie has been especially generous, lending her secrets to other would-be or current Châtelains. She's really turned lemons into lemonade with a plucky smile on her face the entire time. Bravo, Stephanie!👏

What I love most about Stephanie is that she is absolutely a 100 % genuine person. Nothing fake abut her. One of my best friends texted me the link to her very first vlogs. It was all about the advent calendar and it just grew from there with the delightful Michael Petherick and his channel of Doing It Ourselves. I honestly think that I wouldn't have made it through lock down without her. And Michael restoring his cottage and all of the lovely people that are blessed to be there with her and each other. Even with things opening up especially here in Austin, Texas, I feel like my day is incomplete without Stephanie, Michael and Dan. Its my chill pill even if I've already seen the latest videos. Better than anything on cable TV or otherwise.

Content Creation Bed & Breakfast, an apt name for a big ongoing project and long term vision. Stephanie’s self-taught sewing of the curtains is a most impressive character building part of the backstory. Her artistic excellence as an editor and heart-centered politesse as a presenter is extra-ordinary, all grounded by the realities of plumbing, crumbling, mice and over ambitious water police. The collective experience and success is an inspiration to us all. What a “reality show” can be. I’m glad to learn of the French Heritage Society’s existence and mission. Bravo and Brava to you all for your efforts, scholarships and strategic mission. An important alliance for your own growing audience!!!

It also is worth mentioning that Stephanie Jarvis is well read and her interest in and knowledge of the arts and history is phenomenal and she very generous shares her knowledge. Stephanie regularly takes viewers along on her visits to interesting places like other chateaux and museums. Also fabric and china factories which are of fame and have a longstanding tradition have been featured in her videos. The variety in her videos makes her KZread channel so appealing and as a result has attracted a broad spectrum of people; they all find something to their liking. On top of that, Stephanie narrates her videos so well and the joy she finds in beauty comes across vividly.

I too are one of Stephanie’s Paetrons on the lower level I may add due to pension restrictions , evidently last July my card as a Paetron was declined ! I had no idea whatsoever since my name appeared every week rolling down on the credits ! that is the nature of generosity of Stephanie and Nati, I am sure anyone else would have taken it out July 2020 to March 2021 nothing paid !!!!! A mistake on my part and now restored but it purely emphasises the natural kindness in Lalande and one of the reasons alone there is so much support, Lalander’s are a breath of fresh air. Josie x

Because of Stephanie people have brought beauty back into their lives, table settings, fabric and peacocks. People have started collecting Spode because of her ! That dress she wore is an amazing Vivienne Westwood in a beautiful fabric that Vivienne has used. Since the 70s originally used on Mark’s and Spencer’s shirts with bleach dragged over them 😍😍😍

Yes Stephanie, seeing people together and helping each other has been very heartwarming. Your laughter, joy and optimism is also very important and has been what has kept me as an avid follower. And my husband watches your vlogs too! Thank you for being there for all of us who have found the pandemic very difficult! Big hugs from Montreal!
