FFXIV Streamer "View Botting" And It Is Not OK (Drama)

Ойындар

In this video Xeno talks about the Final Fantasy XIV streamers who have their stream embedded on sites like IcyVeins and are artificially increasing their viewer count on Twitch (basically legal view botting). Xeno mainly talks about RinKarigani in this video, but there are other streamers doing the exact same thing.

Fextralife is the biggest offender of view botting. Their stream is embedded on their website which has a lot of guides and wikis on Elden Ring, Divinity 2, etc. If you've googled anything related to Elden Ring, guaranteed you've been to their website at least once.

I never knew this concept of "view botting" was even a thing until now and it totally makes sense about Fextralife. No matter what game they played they always managed to have a weirdly consistent high view count.

Not sure if this is a troll or just misinformed or maybe I’m misreading it. Fextralife has been around longer than streaming services. The guy that started it was one of the first online guide creators for video games. Fextralife has hosted a bunch of game events and partook in raising money for many charities over the years. They also house what is arguably one of the largest guide archives from what’s got to be well over 60-70k contributors now. My point is, I don’t think they would have a reason to fluff the numbers. They likely have retained a lot of their followers over the last 10+ years and have simply grown since then.

@@kayreal1273 my information is coming from personal experience with Fextralife over the last 10 years. Whatever they have going on in the last 2-3 I am clueless. Indeed. Their stream is embedded in their own website… of course it is. It’s their website. If you told me their stream was embedded on a different website then perhaps. I just don’t see how they fit into this conversation vs a random streamer of 200 viewers overnight gaining 3x as many. Perhaps I’m just biased due to my years of using and supporting Fextralife.

It's easy to tell who's view botting. Sudden growth with nothing major going on in game or drops plus a slow chat is a good indicator. I watch a lot of 1 to 2k streamers and their chat relatively all moves pretty fast. Checked out Rins stream after I noticed his views drastically went up out of nowhere and his chat was as slow as always and instantly unfollwed. I just refuse to ever watch anyone I think is embedding/viewbotting.

I haven't played FF14 in the last couple years much at all. I stopped playing shortly after having everything on farm after the endwalker release. but a good while even before that. I knew Rin was viewbotting. I noticed it immediately. back when he would have like 30 ppl, then 3 days later at like two in the morning i saw him with 500 viewers. But the chat was radio silent. I typed in his chat to press 1 if you are awake and still watching and I got banned on that account. I really till this day mainly watch xeems, even though I don't play the game I pop in here and there to still show support. Xeems from day one gave me the vibe of an "earner" I been working since i was 13, and I'm 30 now. Trust me, you can tell the difference between talent and hard time/work or a combination of both in people. I saw xeems grow for a very long time started playing FF before Heavensward release when ninja came out. My twitch handle is SamauriVain, so you know I'm not BSing. Loyal viewers have seen me around in his chat.

After that he did some raiding with a consistent 800 ish viewers which dropped drastically after his tirade. He also dropped the whole Loremaster thing after that thing as well and there were some wild theories that he already did msq before doing it live on stream (hence he would say something like "I'm not missing anything" when looking away to write in his notebook during cutscenes. Someone figured out a mechanic from the alliance raid and said how they think it worked and he got mad and acted like the guy cheated to know that info when they're suppose to be blind. Then a few people were like it makes sense if you're used to the game so you can tell that stuff easier and then pyro said sorry but then the guy who explained the mech sounded like he was gonna cry and APOLOGIZED to pyro for sounding like he was "cheating". The exchange made me mega uncomfortable especially since it seemed like the guy was his friend or at least a notable member of community so I clicked off again 😂 If only he wasn't so rude, maybe he could have kept the zepla/xeno numbers. Just unfollowed him now that I know what's going on. Viewbotting is scummy but I think the problem lies with twitch not having a good algorithm to get smaller streamers noticed (like KZread does) so some people feel like that's the only way to get noticed. The only thing that matters on twitch is more viewers attracts more viewers.

The issue is more with Twitch imo Twitch knows that doing this is a way to get more viewers, which means they get more ad revenue. I'd take more issue with Twitch counting streams embedded on other sites as views than individual streamers agreeing to have their streams embedded on sites they're partnered with. Twitch is the one that's actually responsible for making it work like this. They could simply change it so that streamers can't try to rig things in their favor, but they probably won't because they benefit from it more than they do.

Everyone is jealous they aren't as cute as xemo Tbh, I think it's pretty easy to gauge it based on the chat activity if someone is doing it. It doesn't work everytime but it's pretty consistent. The two big exceptions are probably actually ironically Xeno and then DansGaming. Dan has a much larger stream than chat because he super over moderates his chat. While Xeno has a super active chat for his size due to Xeno just being a lot more active within his own community. Xeno has the chat of like a 5 - 10k streamer with only about 1.5k - 2k consistent. I think it kind of sucks about Rin too. He has been growing since Ultimate prog. Just was impatient. Rin was essentially where Xeno was at a few years ago and Ultimate was a massive boost in his consistent viewers and I think he would have grown naturally over a few years. I think a lot of these content creators super underutilize youtube as well. Which is why their growth is probably slower than they want. Xeno has a fanbase from both youtube and twitch. Kind of similar to how Asmon got started but Xeno jumped on the streaming train a lot earlier

Viewbotting especially if you are trying to actually bulid a personal brand as a goal, is actually completely counterproductive long-run and I dont think people understand that enough to see past the short term gains. Very sad. yes you can grow faster and get more exposure but its a catch 22 of sorts. If someone had good content and focused on their content and brand, they proabably wouldnt be off googling how to look for embed deals or pursuing partnerships where they get embedded in the first place. It speaks a lot of the endgame that is in store, which is eventual deterioration of their brand someday. and also if people find out you take 1 step forward and many many more steps back, it just keeps buliding as word of mouth spreads, one will be known for cheapness instead of one''s own intended brand message, and you can never live it down. its not even a right/wrong or fair/unfair debate, it is guaranteeing one's own long term failure in a sense. losing credibility with oneself, deep down when someone utilizes viewbotting/shortcuts in any shape or form in business they are telling themselves they don't believe in themselves. Even assuming no one finds out, and they profit tremendously in metrics and growth, no thoughtful person can feel fulfilled by something they know they don't deserve.

While I don't think it'll ever be respectable I'd have a different opinion on it if someone, for example, put time, effort and money into icy veins and it was their website that they ran themselves and managed and all that. If they then wanted to embed their stream there whatever still sucks but its their website and people going there are likely to actually join a stream and interact of they've come for info on something and see the person who made the website is also streaming the game. But icy veins is a collaborative project between various people across a few different games with which 1 single person probably has a very small part of. In that case I really don't like it.

I don't exactly equate embeds to viewbotting, but I don't think someone not actually watching/listening the embed should count as a viewer. I don't know how it counts... but if it does currently, it should not count anyone that mutes/closes/scrolls out of sight of the player. I'm not going to say someone watching via an embed shouldn't count as a viewer though. Maybe it would also be nice to track the numbers separately? Cause twitch viewer will care about the number of folks hanging out on chat and they should have that info to avoid a jebait... but advertisers? They don't give a shit how poppin' chat is... they care about the potential eyes seeing their brand. I don't think it matters if someone is seeing your screen unintentionally, like I don't think it matters if you head to a site for a guide, a stream starts playing and you stop and watch said stream... or pay it as much attention as any other stream on your second monitor as background. It goes, I hope, without saying that using script/code/a paid service/etc to artificially inflate the number to something not equal to real humans watching your stream is scummy.

I think viewbotting is bad but the embed issue isn't the same imo. Embeds provide the opportunity for more people to find you, the view count being counted that way is more of an issue with Twitch. Look at being at the front page of Twitch. If you are on the front page, is every person passing by watching your stream? No, but your view count is inflated. However it provides another opportunity for someone to find you. If Twitch removed views from external sources, I still think people would embed because it's just advertising your stream.

I'm confused - Rin's viewers increased on January 10th which is the same day 6.3 expansion dropped. Before this he had been playing a lot of WoW. So how can you tell just from that site it was view botting and not people taking a look at new content? I don't watch Rin unless he is running FFXIV content with another streamer (and then I'm typically watching the other streamer honestly) or when he was trying WoW. I do think there is a small circle of creators for FFXIV, of which Rin is one, who just promote each other constantly and few others. I don't think Zepla is one of them since she can barely notice when a streamer comes in her chat. I'm not saying that as a dig at Zepla - I find it funny when one of these streamers come in her chat trying to get her attention and she basically doesn't even acknowledge their existence! LMAO Her views this week are back down to about 1k too with her doing live trials for a TOP prog spot. I think they were at 3-4k during DSR.
