Explore breathtaking new environments, encounter exotic new races, master exciting new jobs, and fight alongside prominent characters with the new Trust system as you embark on a new journey as the Warrior of Darkness!
Ala Mhigo is at last free from imperial rule, but that liberty may prove fleeting as the Empire moves to both reclaim this bloodied nation and subjugate all of Eorzea.
In their hour of need, however, they cannot turn to the Warrior of Light. Nor to the Scions, who yet slumber, their souls adrift. The realm is left to struggle without its saviors, for they have been beckoned beyond time and space─beckoned to the First. Here a new adventure begins in a world where light ushers all unto oblivion. But hope is not yet lost, for where there is light there is shadow.

Turning what was originally pure evil, borderline power rangers villains, into sad beings twisted to the point of madness by grief, for the loved ones that they could not save. I always presumed that Luna help to build the Crystarium since she was a child some years after the beginning of the Flood. To me she is in her 50's ( still young for a Viera and young enough to never have seen the true black night while also having the experience of a veteran ). Well you can't really call the survival during the Flood a "life" but I think it's close enough. But yeah, if Y'shtola can find the way to travel between Shards for everyone ( without having to die and not only for the WoL ) we could see Luna again even if 100+ years happens on the First due to time compression.

We dont know when she was born or joined so even if we assumed she was there from start. She would only be about 100-120 or so which is just half her life. it's actualy a big concern of mine. Now that the Shadowbringer arc is finished, there's... nothing left to do in the First. Being his own separate place means that storylines started in the source will never take us back there. At least we could revisit Ishgard, Ala Migho, the steppes... but the First? It's gonna be a desert when the next expansion hits. But we can't just simply link the two world together. Even if it could be justified story-wise, it would just wreck the political landscape and balance of the game story, in unmendable ways.

Lahabrea was going overboard and tilting hydaelyn to the dark, while we tippied it too close to the light. he was just a kid who was chosen to be used as the heart of the planet's spirit, the first primal. its pretty tragic. he was very young and due to it, took his role seriously.. lil too seriously and refused to chill with his mates. i kinda get the feeling he was pushed/told to be the heart as tbh someone else was going to be the heart. and lets not forget elidibus did some good to a degree with the 2 people from the 13th, the lil boy who assisted us with the waring triad, and the elf girl who helped groom albert and crew.

While this story has issues (most of those issues being due to trying to mix the game mechanics with the story, among others), I think things like this are what make FFXIV's story fairly strong overall. The writers are fully aware of the rules established in their universe, and make use of them really well. Shadowbringers is really a perfect example of this. In order to make the plot they had in mind work, they drew on a LOT of previous content that, if I had to guess, wasn't necessarily meant to set all this up. The result is a story that makes a lot of sense logically, and allows players to have immensely satisfying moments like this, where paying attention to the story and it's lore is rewarded.

  • @sleepysera

@@Bistai949 I remember an interview back in...Heavensward, I believe?...where they said they had the general direction of the story planned out until 6.0, so I'd argue that they very much did intend to set things up as they did. I think that's also, in part, why we should appreciate the "weaker" expansions more, as people sometimes like to call them (namely ARR and SB), because for there to be epic pay-off, you need to set it all up first.

  • @Novaphaux1984

@@sleepysera as another puts it, setup is no excuse for poor execution with great ingredients. Mechanically sb is great, story elements where essential, excution faltered a few times. An easily blamable character was lyse. Lyse development was highly problematic, having wins handed to her for no effort and minimal (implied but not invested enough) costs. Conrad not being her father figure, yda we never possibly met, papalymo whos arc was a butt end of getting dragged along jokes. Fixing these would have costs 2 to 3 cutscenes for conrad, a few quests for yda (legacy of those she helped) a better spats between fredola and lyse ideals instead of typical jabs ( you monster vs you barbarian is very weak and lacks investment) Lyse doesnt even get any blame bringing tempered agents into peace talks. Sir ameryic, got stabbed for saving ishgaurd... if she is purposely to be written as a weak leader then ala migo needs to burn then. Lyse wasnt the only issue, yoyo and fredola the two main villans we deal with paint their side opinions sorely to make us hate them more generally. the npcs as a character dont respond as naturally as one thinks either, the willingness to not help would have been more extreme then the sudden flip to helping is nearly not well fleshed out othrr than a single fetch quest each which cheapens winning them over. Heavensward has far better post war developments, making them trust dragons took patches to settle in. Alas its getting windsome, tldr; great ingedients needs a slighlty better chef.

Then my friend, who was with me to help but had already done it, questioned why I didn't react as much as he expected (cause I LOVE Emet and he knew that) and then the realization hit me and I just had a delayed freakout the rest of the fight. At the start I didn't liked it as much and I almost gave up in-between ARR and Heavensward content but I pushed through and ever since Heavensward and onwards it has become the best MMO for me and one of my favourite FF games

Was this during ARR, Heavensward, or the OG XIV? Because ARR is GW2 "personal story" tier of bad - well, maybe a step or two above that, but the point still stands ARR is comical in terms of writing and post ARR is incredibly dense. Heavensward it gets way better, Stormblood is drawn out and a lot of "go do this" but not nearly as rough as ARR. 1.0 was just a mechanical disaster. There is PLENTY of reason XIV could have gotten shit on for 1.0-2.0. ShB is really what elevated this game for me from "this is an okay to solid MMO" to "this is the best damn game I've played in the past half a decade."

The actual writing ability to take that line and use it as they did multiple times is amazing. --The gremlin mocking the WoL in the trailer, as the WoL struggles to find the will to continue as they are saddled down with all the trauma and PTSD from their past. --Emet-Selch mocking the WoL as they begin to collapse under the strain from the Light Aether infecting their soul. --And the WoL coming to the realization that the fight that Elidibus is engaged in, the very reason for his motivation, no longer exists. Elidibus can no longer recall who he made his vow to, he can no longer recall the majority of the people from his life. It's debatable as to whether or not the Ascians would have even been able to revive those who were sacrificed to create Zodiark. Aether has been shown to be involved in a closed cycle, and the removal of a large chunk of it to create Zodiark means that unless they can find an equal amount to what was lost it's a pointless struggle. Especially when you think about how the 13th Shard was rendered useless by the overwhelming Dark Aether.

The Warrior of Light fight has my absolute favorite FFXIV Easter Egg: the summoned warrior specters are the cast of FF4. The Dark Knight wears Cecil's helm. The twin Lalafells are Palom and Porom and cast Twincast Meteor. The bard casts Holy because Rosa is an archer. The Summoner's Bahamuts have blue fire, as does Rydia's. The Ninja uses Water and Fire attacks as reference to Edge's Ninjitsu abilities. Lastly, the Warrior is Cid, who mostly used hammers, but could also use axes. It's great. Also, yeah, Jesse calling the end of 5.3 back in 2.X is probably one of the most insane correct plot calls and payoffs I've ever seen. Goes to show the care the FFXIV team puts into the game.

Elidibus was supposed to be the one to bring balance between light and dark. However, he did end up fulfilling his duty. He admits in this cutscene that he was the one who pushed you along back at the Waking Sands, to push the realm back towards light. He does so and you become the Warrior of Light, whose legend in Eorzea then inspires G'raha to time travel to rescue you from an early demise. Then as we know, the events of ShB happen, honing your character into the WoD. Now that Elidibus is gone, you are both the Warrior of Light and the Warrior of Darkness. Balance achieved. Can't wait to see how they wrap this whole thing up in Endwalker.

Just as a side note, the exarch did die at that moment. Only his memories were passed on. Like a backup, sent to another hard drive. His current soul and body died in the First in that very moment. And it's when I realised it that I cried. Damn you writers.

The fact the crystal was fully glowing it means we took his soul too, so the G'Raha we have is like us with a thicker soul (since the exarch fused with his first counterpart with the 8th umbral calamity)

Yes he died there but he transfered his soul too. That's why everyone was so worried about the thing, what if his older soul can't recognize it's younger self in the Source? It could have been a disaster. I wonder if SE will use this as a plot device later, basically the dude has double spirit and hundreds of years of experience and he's the only one who can controll the crystal tower. And he's a fan favorite character. Pretty op lol.

To pull off this magnitude of a story which was 10 years in the making, to come back to full circle, takes a genius to write this type of story. What's amazing about FF14 is no other single player FF can accomplish this. It requires to be a live service in order to pull this kind of story. And I am so glad that I was part of it from the beginning.
