Welcome to the 2nd entry of my "how to" series, in this series we will be covering EVERY single job Final Fantasy 14 has to offer and I will be personally challenging myself to learn all the jobs to the highest level and provide guides for you guys during my journey. So join me on my journey and together we shall learn them all to the highest level!
The video may not be as short as my previous guides but I can assure you I nail most if not every point I could think of when playing a PLD, I've mained the tank role for 8+ years since the start of ARR and have had plenty of tanking experience so I really wanted to make sure this was RIGHT. If you have any feedback or need any help with these guides then please do leave them in the comments below and I would be happy to reply.
Opener: ffxivrotations.com/3co3
Standard Loop after every Requiescat combo: ffxivrotations.com/3d5a
A lot of this is my own research but I couldn't of done it without the help of the resources provided in the Balance discord, so props to the brains over there.

    Something that got past my reviewing stages (I've been up all night so was easy to miss I guess) is I mention intervention is "20% for the first 10 seconds" at 6:15 no idea why I said this but I meant 20% for the first 4 seconds... on top of that its worth mentioning that the buff from rampart and sentinel do not stack for the intervention, so using both isn't going to make it 40%. For a more detailed breakdown of how to recover our Rotation and a quick mock up of Dungeon AoEing, check this video out: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aXl8xM-rj67IYdI.html&ab_channel=AzuriteRPG

    Great stuff! I do have a couple of suggestions. 1) You mentioned that Clemency “benefits” from Req. You might want to note that it does *not* get an increase in the potency, especially since it *did* in previous expacs. Just the instant cast effect. 2) A couple of things regarding popping Divine Veil. You mentioned, correctly, that you can pop it with Holy Spirit. However the way you said it implied you needed to use a Req’d Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit heals you whether you’re in Req or not, so it’s not necessary to be in req. You may also want to mention that Holy Circle also pops it. In dungeon trash packs, it’s handy to use veil and pop it yourself if the DPS/healer eats an AoE. Almost all trash wipes I see are from the healer getting behind when they have to heal someone other than the tank, and tossing that heal/shield out can often provide the protection necessary to ensure the healer doesn’t need to split their attention. 3) You should definitely consider leading with the Req combo in big trash pulls. On six targets, as an example, the Req combo does *double* the potency per GCD as the FoF Total Eclipse/Prominence combo. A not inconsequential portion of that damage is the DoT that gets applied to all the targets by Blade of Valor. If you wait until FoF is done before using the Req combo, a lot of times the trash will be dead before that DoT gets applied (ie. 9th GCD vs 20th). This can definitely end up screwing up the timing of your buffs when it comes to the single target bosses, but delaying FoF so that you can realign it during the boss is definitely a net positive in over all potency if you get to make sure you’re potency on the trash mobs is optimized. In addition, when dealing with dungeons and trash mobs, unReq’d HC spam is only 5 potency less per target, on average, to unbuffed TE/P and only ~40ish less that FoF’d TE/P. In exchange, you get a 400 potency heal, *every GCD.* This can be a pretty noticeable amount of extra healing. Swapping to unReq’d HC can definitely ease the burden on a healer who might be struggling for whatever reason. Or, if you’re coordinating with your healer in VoiceChat or something, it could let them continue to DPS while you take a much milder loss to DPS than them needing to cast a GCD heal. All of this is optimization on casual content though, so that that with a grain of salt. 5) I’d recommend putting both Expiacion and Circle of Scorn on the same weave in the opener on single target, and just in general. Now that they’re both 30s CDs, you can just muscle memory them together. And if you’re doing the 61s rotation, as you’re suggesting, you’ll end up using them both at the same time in your rotation each time, which enhances the muscle memory nature of it. This helped me a bit, since the change in CoS’s CD screwed up some of my muscle memory and realigning them together made it easier for me to adjust.

    Idk why but i never thought to pop hallowed ground early in a dungeon for big trash pulls but that just makes a lot of sense for better dps/ quicker clears. Especially since i usually just hold it and almost never use it. I really appreciate how well you presented the damage rotations with both visuals and talking us through it. Plus your voice is clear and smooth, making it all easy to digest. Solid work!

    Holy moly! Where have you been all these patches? This is one of the best guides+explanations I've had the pleasure to experience. Not only did you give the rotation (which is what I looked for when searching), but your explanations of the skills themselves were so clear that it actually helped me to understand why the rotation was the way it was. Most guides I've seen just say "do these skills in this order" so if I get a little out of sync with their steps I get lost on how to get back, but you've explained things so well I actually understand the importance of each combination. Thank you so much for this!

    Excellent guide! There is one minor correction though, and that is that Holy Circle is a DPS increase on as few as 2 targets rather than 3. Holy Circle is a total of 600 potency on 2 targets as opposed to 540 on Holy Spirit (unless I'm missing something.)

Brooding out of the way, thank you for pointing this out to me, I wouldn't notice if you didn't otherwise, I just thought Requiescat was a flat % increase, instead it literally just changed the potencies of these 2 spells

    @@AzuriteTV Yeah, it’s kind of silly that Req’d Holy Circle is a DPS increase on two targets but unreq’d it’s 3 targets. That being said, the difference on un-req’d spells is only 10 potency, so it’s not that big of a loss if you HC two targets outside of req. Though the only time you’d be using unreq’d Holy Spirit is a long disengage and the only time you’d be using unreq’d HC is if your healer needs some help in big dungeon pulls and the mobs aren’t dead after Req and FoF.

    I love paladin and learned a few new things from this video. Thank you for sharing! As a SCH healer main, I would add that tanks shouldn't be afraid to use stuns to help mitigate damage during trash mobs that are proving to be hard hitting/debuffers, particularly if you can use Shield bash and Low blow to take out two enemies for a few seconds. As WHM, it's less of an issue due to Holy.

    I totally agree! Like I said if things get a bit hairy and you need the stuns as a last resort for mitigation then go ahead, but really only as a last resort because by throwing in a shield bash that's one less aoe from the PLD which means the mobs will die slower meaning more damage to the Paladin! Which is why I advice just to stick to low blow unless really necessary to shield bash :)

    A quick little trick that can help on tight deeps checks: Requiescat's buff lasts 30secs, but the skill itself is melee-only. Meanwhile, Holy Spirit and the entire Confiteor combo is 25y ranged, while lasting 12secs or something (and also, the entire post-Confiteor Blade combo doesn't need the Requiescat buff to cast, so as long as you cast Confiteor during the buff, you're golden). So, if you know there's a ranged-probable phase sometime in the fight, you *can* activate Requiescat during a oGCD lull to set the buff up (typically during the FoF window) and when you're forced in ranged, you got 12 seconds where you can do your Holy Light -> Confiteor combo and lessen or outright negate the range phase damage loss. It's not a "spur of the moment" thing, but it can help when you're getting the hang of the fight and want to push the extra sliver of dps to beat enrage or just finish before an annoying mechanic starts.

  • @DarkDyllon

    @DarkDyllon

    2 жыл бұрын

    honestly, most of this is irrelevant information. Requiescat is magical damage (when it damages it applies as magical damage, you can easily check this if you got FF14 quick launcher and get an plugin that'll tell you the damage types, either physical, magical or void, void being not able to get mitigated) the Requiescat buff now applies regardless of the MP you have (previously i needed an certain %, forgot howmuch but was more than when you get rez'd, not it applies regardless) Requiscat always gives you 5 magic hits on it (doesn't trigger on physicals, so your GCD combo can still be used as it doesn't consume an stack) you'll generally use 4 holy spirits (atleast if it isn't an dungeon ofcourse) and 1 confiteor, here is where your information is irrelevant honestly. casting confiteor will ALWAYS remove requiescat, always. you got 5 stacks of requiescat left? 1 confiteor and it's gone. using confiteor (which can only be used by having the Requiescat buff) will ALWAYS trigger the confiteor combo, the confiteor combo is also magical, but obviously can't be buffed by requiescat as the timer will always be longer than being able to keep the confiteor combo. using any other GCD before finishing the confiteor combo will remove the confiteor combo as it works on the regular GCD combo timer (which is 30 seconds in endwalker) You can however pop requiescat earlier (like this video explains) and use it's stacks after applying the Goring Blade DoT.

This is nice in a sense, but i'm having trouble relearning that specific part. also the ignoring an atonement stack really ircks me, feels to me if you don't use all your things, it's bad job design, still love the job, just gotta drill it into my muscle memory again. also double weaving while also weaving into defensive CDs makes it a lot more difficult, that's why I kinda despise the dummy trial (that Yoshi-P claims you can handle that trial) but you'll always have to weave in different CDs depending on encounter concidering you got macro delay (fuck macro delay, i use that for either Shirk or Intervention for the 2nd in the party list) or you gotta take an tankbuster and gotta double weave 2 defensive CDs in. i'll get back up there, just kinda having an hard time relearning it, the 8 GCD of complete free movement is godlike though.

    Hello, great clear guide, I'm very new to Paladin and tanking in general, may I ask where you came up with the idea to skip and lose one Atonement after the first full rotation? Was that something you decided upon yourself or something others have theory crafted and proven to be a dps increase? I only ask because with 2.41s GCD on ps4 it seems as though I'd only be delaying FoF for the duration of one GCD or less, and with atonement being one of our more hard hitting abilities, losing one atonement and overwriting the confiteor combo dot 4 seconds early with the melee dot, it seems hard to picture this as a dps gain but I'm far too inexperienced to know for sure, could you please respond and tell me whether or not you're 100% sure that losing that stack is a dps increase? Thank you in advance, and a well made clear guide so good job :)

  • @LuminNox

    @LuminNox

    2 жыл бұрын

    The whole idea is to line up your buffs with raid buffs. The game is currently designed in a way that all raid buffs are coming out every 60 or 120 seconds. By delaying your FoF by 1 GCD you're effectively misaligning your buffs with raid buffs over the duration of a longer fight. So it might look odd but is a DPS gain on the long run to skip one attonement for better line up.

  • @AzuriteTV

    @AzuriteTV

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yup, what Lumin said pretty much! We don't want to delay that FoF any longer then we have to or potentially drop the Goring Blade dot either, you have a lot of SkS but it won't always be that way when new gear comes out and the last thing you want to do is build bad habits. And yes, this has all been theory crafted over on the Balance discord, go check them out in the description if you would like. I've done my own research but it was a lot of going back and forth with what the people in the Balance crafted up and I just decided that it was infinitely better then what I could come up with :)

  • @LuminNox

    @LuminNox

    2 жыл бұрын

    Might be worth adding that this is based on 8-player content. When you're alone or in a 4-player dungeon going for that third Attonement should be an overall dps increase depending on the party composition unless you're missing out on a FoF but I wouldn't stress out too much in those situations.

  • @AzuriteTV

    @@LuminNox which you will if you delay that FoF by 1 GCD, we need to look at the bigger picture, atonement is a heavy hitter but does it make up for 1 GCD delay of FoF? Even in dungeons bosses this is going to add up, you cannot use FoF until after Savage Blade, if you use it before you will miss the last GCD of FoF being a Goring Blade which is a pretty big DPS loss because straight after that last Goring we will be doing our Holy Spirit combo into confiteor, so we cannot amend that dot until we get to Blade of Valor, which means we will have an unbuffed Goring throughout our whole Holy Spirit combo, which is quite a big loss of DPS. I'll do some more digging when I get home but pretty sure raid or not, it's a loss to do 3 unbuffed atonements and I think I've provided a clear enough insight to why

    @@AzuriteTV How on earth did you manage to make the combat look so smooth and cinematic in your video up to minute 12:00? I find that, with FF14 catering to console controllers the combat is probably likely to have major limitations, and slowness in certain areas (certainly not in rattling off chain combos if you are experienced and practiced). However I feel the game's combat could be so much more intuitive and fluid with some combination of free-targeting and vector-targeting. If you've played Lost Ark you would realize that LA is a ripoff of FF14 in a Korean Diablo 3 clone, even down to the story premise. However LA saving grace is its combat which is the best in the genre. One would hope that SE would redo the combat system while keeping the best elements of tab-targeting and comboing, while introducing model collision, and perhaps trimming the GCD to make combat more organic to in what it feels and looks like. There will always be die-hard fans of FF14's combat system, and those who would want to preserve it as a niche, but there is a massive consensus that FF14 combat is slow, and by my own limited experience quite stogy. With certain changes we can free up the mouse cursor for skill shots. Skill shots and dodging are linked to player skill expression and through honed hand-eye coordination allows players to distinguish themselves and is also why League of Legends triumphs over Dota (which is more point-and-click). This is tremendously popular in Korea and many game from Korea emphasize this fast, flowing, intuitive combat in which skill shots and dodging are the staple. Could we ever see a FFMMO with this modified combat system? I find this is my main gripe in FF14, as PvP doesnt seem as satisfying due to this issue and that you are unable to fine-tune builds with say Runes, Tripods, Skill points, whatever you want to call it, and you cannot 1v5 carry your team as such, even if we disregard the Tank-Healer-DPS trinity for a minute.

As it stands, the latter part of the video is focused only on damage dealing, which isn't really the job's main feature. Divine Veil is clunky, so when's some good opportunities to use it? Divine Intervention is great for off-tanking, but are there interesting tips and tricks you can do in specific situations? Cover is a super niche ability with very little practical use cases, so why not spur your viewer's creativity by providing an example? Should I ever spend Requiescat charges on Clemency, or is my sole focus as a Paladin simply damage output? The job offers so many more options that just mashing damage buttons. Anywho, that's me nitpicking. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to more guides from you!

    Hey thanks a lot for that! Not only did you compliment my guide but you've also given me some really good constructive criticism to take away and think about, I cant promise an overnight change to the structure but Ill keep this in mind when making future guides. It sounds like quite a bit of extra work but I'm up for the challenge ! :D Thanks again and if you do want those questions answered just let me know, I'm quite active in my comment sections so I'm always willing to answer questions whenever I'm not sleeping or at work :)

     @Azurite FFXIV Hi Sir, thank you for this great work of yours, liked and subbed. Started playing FF14 2 weeks ago. How on earth did you manage to make the combat look so smooth and cinematic in your video up to minute 12:00?

    The dropped atonement is what bugs me about pld. It makes it feel like it’s an oversight from devs that players had to find a loophole around. Same thing applies for gnb no mercy needing 5 more seconds to line up with the needed GCDs in it.

    Cooldown alignment is probably the biggest factor, if you use FoF before Fast Blade its going to mess with the last GCD not being a Goring Blade. I think also the biggest reason is due to Confiteor combo giving the Goring Blade dot now so we had to adjust our rotation due to this

    If you need a big aoe numbers, do : FoF > Circle of Scorn > Expiacion > Requiescat > 4 Holly Circle(2 intervene between) > Confiteor combo (after, all should be burned). Total Eclipse + Prominence is just mana filler, do not use that for big pulls as the main aoe rotation.

    This is the one class/job i've mained for almost 20 years since 2004 between both WoW and FF14. Noot even the Boom Boom Pew Pew of the dps has made me fall in love with the other class as is playing a Paladin no matter the MMO. There is something about playing such a character, defensively and i do love it as a job in FF14. You feel a bit the pain when you level down in dungeons, yet such is every other job as well. But you feel it. I tend to use Requicast after i pop shields and then Holy Circles that way i'm shielded in AoE while i'm Holy Circling, single when its one target for the other spell.

    I feel that. I'm honestly conflicted though, I've always been a WAR main on FF but I have also always loved the Paladin aesthetic and the Dark/Death Knight Aesthetic, I think I just like the general aesthetic of Tanks in fantasy games :D

    @@AzuriteTV Definetly understand playing Tanks in game. I think there is an inner aspect of the person that is in transferance to the character in playing a Tank and why you may feel at home playing as such and more than another class. I don't play healers for example and i don't try to play or level one. Its not what i enjoy. Yet i dont mind the utility as a PLD to use whats in my kit to try to save someone while at it if i can clutch it. Have never tried FF14 WAR as yet. Have a DRK and its different, but i miss my sword and shield and the clang on my shield when i block, that makes me grin. But in the end, play what you enjoy and feel most at home with. Even if class X was better, i'd still play what i know i'm moost inately better at playing and that gives you some edge vs playing something else your not as good at even if it may be slightly better.

    I have to disagree about one part. If I'm OT I will almost always use Divine Veil + a hard cast Holy Spirit for mitigation on an aoe even if the stars don't align on timing. The idea that you would flash PoA for 15% mitigation, but not give everyone 10% of MY health in a shield (which is always going to be MORE than 15% of the dps/healer max health) is silly.

  • @AzuriteTV

    @AzuriteTV

    This is why I state unless necessary, which in most cases it isn't, the stars aligning is an overexgeration, we can actually plan to use veil with req up and still shield everyone in most cases once we learn a fight, as veil last 30 seconds. But really if you mess up but don't need veil then why break your back and your rotation putting it up, you might literally just be saving seconds of everyone not being topped up by regens, which isn't an urgent need, it's not going to force the healers to heal more. This is why I say unless necessary, if you can clutch up with a veil like you have a healer dead or missing people for a stack then absolutely break your combo and get that up, but otherwise why bother
