[FF14 ShB] Basics to Tanking Guide
Ойындар
I wanted to make an intro tanking guide, so I made an intro tanking guide. Is it a good guide? I think it's an ok guide for getting all the basics down. Gonna make something funny next time.

The advice I give people if they're worried about Tanking is "Do the same dungeon 3 or 4 times as DPS, see how those Tanks do it then you'll learn the layout of the dungeon and the pulls". For me the anxiety I used to get was thinking I was going to go the wrong way or pull more than I could handle but watching a few other tanks do the same dungeon a few times and then doing it myself really helped.
What a nice video! I especially enjoyed when you showed what the different healing bubbles and stuff looked like.
THE video I'd been looking for! I've always wanted to play tank and I've watched other basic tanking vids but this is the only one that manages to calm my anxiety and even gets me excited to try tanking! Thank you so much!

@@Rhigitar Hi man, idk if you're still playing FFXIV but I just wanna say thanks again for this video. I just beat my third ultimate yesterday and I cleared all three of them as tank. FFXIV was my first MMO and I was a very casual gamer, so it's not an exaggeration to say that without this video I would've never got to where I am. Tilts and burnouts do happen but I'm glad I stumbled upon your video at the end of the day, yeah, I'm having a blast with this job. Hope life's treating you well wherever you are. Cheers always
The bit about cooldowns was especially helpful as that is what I was most confused on how to use them efficiently, and was having a hard time finding that info elsewhere.
Super helpful video, I've found no one else explaining some of the things you do. Really appreciated!
Damn thanks for the mitigation cool down rotation! Thats super helpful for someone new to mmo's and tanking.
Yoo this video was so good, thank you man!! I'm new to tanking but I'm having a blast with gnb and drk
"Commonly reffered to as coward, or offtank" - insta sub hahahaha.
Honestly, I watched a ton of tank guides but none was as good and helpful as this one. Thanks!
yeees this is the tanking guide I've been looking for! i'm trying to get over my tankxiety, so far i've done decently but i know there are more rooms of improvement! so thank you for this!
Yo this is such a good guide its so easy to understand and made me learn and realize some stuff that I was missing since I main tank and have been playing tank for a long time so thanks for the video man!
An excellent video I've watched a few and this one finally gave me what I needed, thanks
I was looking for a tanking guide - I am level 49 GLD/PLD so getting close to the heavy stuff. I found this, and it has to be the best guide. It has information AND humour in it. Thank you.
As someone who walks around with a large toothpick...as long as the tank doesn't run around the boss for no reason I'm happy
Very nice, informative and concise guide with good visuals as well, thank you!
Thank you for this video. It really helped me get over the tanking anxiety lol.
This is exactly what I was looking for, thank you!!
thanks for the great video...im starting my first tanking class and your video help me alot in term of my preparation and reduce my fear of being a tank!~
Just picked up Gunbreaker and want to give it a go. Tankxiety is real (coming from other mmos) but the Shia clip, along with the rest of this video, convinced me to go for it. Thanks!
This is the first beginner's tank guide that actually has made me feel confident enough to try tanking despite many other well made guides talking about getting over tank anxiety they never quite made me feel like I could, thank you.

Hope you have a blast! Just remember your defensive CDs and you'll be laughing out of dungeons/normals with all the player commendations.
this is the best tanking guide ive seen. thank you.
Good tip, make sure to use any new armour or you have decent gear... as a whitemage the amount of time I’ve seen terrible armour is sadden, and they still mass pull to the point they are two shot
@Rhigitar

True that! Never underestimate the power of gear! Personally I haven't seen that too often... But what I do see far too often is mass pulling tanks with zero cooldowns.
this video is great, I came from wow and I mained dps but sometimes specd into tank to fill in the role, when I started in ff I was so anxious about trying to tank, it felt so overwhelming since it's another game, but this helped. thank you for the great content!
Great guide! I just started tanking and tbh I hate playing with random groups. Tankxiety at its finest. Easy solution for gnb; level up to 70 with fates, msq & co and then tank in trust only. Not the same experience but I think an option to learn your class without stress and hate comments and earn some self-esteem in taking in general. But unfortunately without any help either. That's why guides like this are incredibly helpful. Especially that graphic for mitigations. Looks like I did at least some things right but there's plenty of room to grow to be the best tank of light ever existed. Thanks mate 👍
Thanks for the guide! Picked up dark knight recently, after realizing that healers aren't my thing I'm hoping that I'll enjoy tanking. I've only run newbie dungeons as of now but it's been good so far!
"everyone loves you" except for MNK and DRG when for one reason or another you have to rotate or move the boss.
Thank you for the cooldown layout! Now I know if my tanks are using cooldowns are not as a healer.
this is incredibly useful for a tank newbie in ffxiv!
best tanking video hands down. gret vid!!

The best kept secret among tanks is how very easy tanking is! IMO The hardest part is the tanxiety, but just queue in and do it. More than likely you'll be surprised at how good you are at it already... And then you reap all those sweet sweet commendations.

@@Rhigitar Just learning to Tank after having played only DPS to lvl 60, and it seems that a lot of the time the thing that seems to cause me the most tankxiety is thinking "Wait... this can't be all I have to do. I must be missing something and messing up"
Great video! I am definitely a better tank now, thanks to you.
I loved this video, subbed
This is great stuff.
"I hear you cry out in pain" Finally
im the black mage getting spanked when tank loses agro lol thx for the info. very useful!
Awesome guide.
BROO THANK YOU SO MUCH
Fear that people hate me? Why? It was the healers fault! But in all seriousness, thanks for the great guide. I originally planned to never play any tank class but then I somehow started to play the DRK to grind for that nice panther mount and while leveling in palace of the dead I realized that I really like the class and want to learn to play it properly.
I decided to watch this out of nowhere and got a good laugh when dude said off tank commonly know as coward
This definitely helped
If you are off tank and fuck up on getting second place in the enmity list and almost end up competing with main tank for first place you can use shirk on the main tank to correct the mistake. Also DRK TBN go brrrrrr.
I felt bad when I died because my HP went low even though I felt like I did everything right. Good to know that healers and tanks have that relation and it isn't always my fault if I die during mob pulls.
Good basics! I think the only thing I would suggest if you decide to make another guide like this is to add how to do co-tank or tank switching. This is something I've never done even if I have a tank at 80. Like, do I shirk before I turn off tank stance? Or turn off tank stance then shirk? A lot of higher level content has mechanics where you need to use tank switching, usually if there is more than one tankbuster within a short period.

I actually am busy working on a more in-depth (general) tanking guide that will go over that stuff! This one was specifically aimed at the most basic need to know stuff for normal content and there are no tank swaps in normal content.

First dungeon I pub group tanked was Qarn. What a weird first Dungeon.
Ayyy so I was doing things pretty well already. Just didn't know about the mob pulling amounts (but I was always doing AT LEAST 2 as much as possible). So you have to go ballsy after 50 huh?
Lol good vid man

Don't be scared of messing up. Every time you do, just write "I have tank anxiety and a disability due to which I have 1 arm and 3 butt cheeks" in the chat and then post about it on reddit. People will support you and call anyone who's upset with you toxic. It works every time, I swear.

Nashu's drawing skills are legendary.
As harsh as it sounds, what got me over my Tankexity (spelling) was just realising that I'd probably never see these people again and not to worry about them.
correction at 5:22 ninja actually get an AOE at lvl 35 and not 40 with the Mudra skill Katon

Thank you! Would always be nice if more people find and enjoy it. It's a ton of fun making these.
a good tank makes the run great.. a bad tank makes a run a living hell. aspecially in the 50+ dungeons. as a healer i had a tank that did other than turning on the tank stance and wall to walling, he didn't tank. no damage mitigation nothing. and so by the time he got to the wall he lost halve his health and he took so much damage all the time no mater what healing move i did i couldn't save him. (level 70 dungeon)
had a tank i had to heal with level 20 gear and leave 1 accessories in stone vigil trying to pull wall to wall. instead of leaving i decided to learn tanking
11:05 what DRK armor is that? the helm doesn't seem like the one you get for the job quests too.

That's a mix set. Helmet: Lakeland Hood of Fending (level 71 dungeon, Holminster Switch) Chest: Chromite Armor of Fending (level 70 crafted) Arms: Chromite Gauntlets of Fending (level 70 crafted) Legs: Replica Heavy Allagan Cuisses (you can easily grab it off the marketboard) Boots: Chromite Sabatons of Fending (level 70 crafted) Weapon: Caladbolg Anemos (level 70 first stage relic)

Tank anxiety. It's not just me. Lol
Yea, I use clemency all the time in roulettes. Really don't care if I'm insulting a random healer. They have to prove to me they can do their job. I rarely use it when I've got my friend healing, though. But there are so many downtimes in a lot of dungeon fights, and usually right after aoes, where I'll just throw clemency on whomever is lowest and also heal myself in the process.
If you have good ping on jp server, I reccomend to try Jp server. Why? Because their raid culture is so wholesome. Its unspeakable rule if you say its your first time trying the dungeon, whole group will go at relaxed pace and they won't mind you watching cutscenes.
@Rhigitar

That sounds amazingly wholesome.
what exactly is ''this content'' referring to, where does it end and where does the true hard stuff begin?
@brookefencl4344
3 жыл бұрын
Anything with EX, Savage, Unreal, Ultimate, etc. in the Duty name is generally going to be the "hard stuff" where you're expected to be pretty confident with the basics.
what about having bad internet to many enemies can lag people with bad internet and people dont care
bro nice guide, but plesse dont give the text color red...its hard to read....
"..if it's not the tank, some poor dps is currently being spanked by the boss." This is true, my rear is still sore from the pounding.
I recently tried to learn paladin and the people in dungeons are extremely hateful. A lot of times I use rampart and sentinel on big pulls like a should and use sheltron to block damage but because my gear is bad I still take a lot of damage and everyone wants to tell me about how stupid I am. I try to pull small but the healers always run ahead of me and attack more things then we all end up dying. I will never ever tank a trial or raid, that’s from sure.
@K_H_P_

So sorry to hear that, no one deserves to be treated that way esp over a game. What server are you on? If it's not a JP server, I'd suggest playing on one, bc people are generally very welcoming and chill there. They let tanks go at their own pace and are extra nice to sprouts.
@Rhigitar
3 жыл бұрын
That's awful to hear... Have you tried to update your gear? I assume you're still leveling too 80? What you can do is use your poetics to grab the previous expansions endgame gear (this will always last you roughly half way into the following 10 levels). I didn't mention it in the video (and in hindsight, really REALLY should have), but gear is unbelievably important and should always be kept up to date. If you're on Aether I can craft you some stuff at your level to bring you up to speed gearwise. It'll make a world of a difference and you'll see tanking is great!
@KalosKitsune
3 жыл бұрын
@@Rhigitar I’ve been doing that. Now I’m at the level 70-80 dungeons and it’s still pretty rough. The first two dungeons in shadowbringers hit like a truck, but so far no one had said anything out of the way to me anymore.
@Rhigitar
3 жыл бұрын
@@KalosKitsune Then you're doing the best you can! If you're always keeping a defensive CD up, gear up to date, and dodging all the AoEs then you're doing fantastically. Remember the healer also still needs to do things too!

Yep, first time ever playing a mmo and tank. Really enjoying the game with the exception of the toxicity. People need to chill, I'm still learning.
Red text was not a good idea.
Okay, now everybody knows how to become a mediocre tank who get the job done. (good video ion that btw) Now, what is the next step? Easy, STOP doing wall to wall pulls in dungeons and, instead, start communicating with the healer, what group size they feel comfortable with. Check if your gear or their gear is even able to handle bigger group sizes. Maybe learn a healer job on the side to get a better grip for their role. Use the fricking chatbox. The silent loner was cool back in the '90s, nobody likes those overused tropes now. ;) Use the two groups pull as a measurement and then talk to your healer again after that. Ask if they can handle more or if they even want to dial back to only a single group. Different healer jobs and players have different thresholds they can work with. As said in this video, better slow than dead.
My prime role for when I'm feeling masochistic. Be sure to play as a catboy for maximum bottom energy.
I think a video for beginners should contain an explanation of the expression "cooldown". Because the way players use it makes absolutely no sense for someone who is not an insider and has standard knowledge of the English language. "Use your cooldowns" is gibberish. A cooldown is the phase after use of an ability where it (and in some case others as well) cannot be used again. That's not something one can use.
No, not all duty roulettes want you to go through the dungeon as fast as possible. Some of us are exploring or looking for loot. As healer I WILL let you die if you piss me off. Pay attention to the rest of the party.
You're explaining things as if you're talking to someone who already knows most of what you're talking about. "tankbuster" "pull wall to wall" there are so many terms in this video I had to google. Experienced players making "intro to basics" videos make this mistake all the time. It's very overwhelming for a new player.
