Again a great video, thank you! TIP: For me it was very important to learn that this saw can handle a height of max 73mm instead of the official 60mm. To do this, use the depth stop so that the saw just cuts the underside of the wood. then use a 2 cm 'spacer' between the back fence and the wood to bring the wood a bit forward. This way the small corner at the lower back will be cut also. Seems a hassle but it's easy and the benefit of the extra 13 mm is worth this extra 'trouble'

ive already got the big daddy kapex but, watched the video because i knew i would learn from it. and i did.. the tip about trenching will be taken i liked the way you clamped the zero clearance fence with the notch cut out as well. videos like this give the appearance that i know what im doing and make me money. thanks for taking the time to make them. they are a priceless learning tool to some of us

+Alan Simpson It depends on what you need the saw for. Other brands may just be as suitable for your such as Dewalt. I own Festool myself because I need accuracy and clean cuts.

Very consistent and high quality on your videos as usual, thank you Peter. Regarding the clamps, I had a similar reaction to yours when I got them with my track saw kit. They have however grown on me and I find myself preferring them to the quick grip ones for several applications. It is probably very subjective, but the solid wood grip and the sense of control when tightening them makes for a very pleasant experience.

Hi Rikard, I suspect that the one that I had with the kit was slightly defective as it would bend at an odd angle when being tightened. I have arthritic joints and I find twisting a small clamp quite tricky when my wrists are playing up. It is good to know that the clamps are popular. Peter

I was worried about limitations but it cuts a bevel on 7 inch skirting no problems. Think its worth paying extra having a double bevel saw also was looking at dewalt single bevel but paid the extra for festool

Thanks for sharing this Peter, it's appreciated. PS I didn't know if you realised Osmo now make water based wood filler in a variety of colours, I've used it and it's very good indeed, zero shrinkage, sands easily to a lovely Finish and colour matches very well.

Hello. Some advice if it’s ok regarding the 60 / 88 or 120. For standard 90x35 or 45 house framing and a little larger 200x100 laminated beams ( obviously have to turn them over on most of these models. My real question is the 60 suitable. It’s not a contractor job saw for me, I’m building/ renovation a couple units so pro work but low levels of use. I see your vid it powers through a solid Jarrah and pine like it’s nothing. Thanks so much

It is a particularly good saw but do look at the Festool web site where you will find the maximum depth and length of cut at various angles and compound angles. If the saw can cover the range you want then it will do the job perfectly. Otherwise look at the KS120. Peter

I was considering using a sliding mitre saw to cut accurate mortises or rectangular trenches. I needed a 2 inch deep cross cut mortise in 4x4 inch fence post. In hindsight, following your great video research, do you think it best to use a handheld circular saw and guide 90 degree protractor to get better results ? Iam worried that the expensive big sliding mitre saws have not so rigid saw arms which would introduce unwanted inaccuracies. Fabulous trench work on the smaller saw. ThAnk you.

Hi Peter, I'm making your bevel/mitre joined drawers with my KS60. It is not quite 45deg - the inside corner of the mitre join is lightly open when the saw is tilted over to its preset 45deg setting. I have looked everywhere - manual, youtube, chat rooms... looking for info on calibration. Tons on the KS120 - nothing on the KS60. Do you happen to know how to adjust it?? I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Hi Henning, The KS60 is packed and will be collected early next week. So, I am unable to do a comparison. This may help... In my view the KS120 is a more sturdy machine which is suitable for any environment. It lacks the 60-0-60 of the KS60 which would almost swing it for me if I were doing that sort of work all the time. The KS60 does a better job of trenching but has a smaller area for stock support. If you have tried a KS120 for any length of time you would probably favour that machine. However, for the person in a small workshop or road warrior (shop fitter, kitchen fitter or 2nd fix) then it would make sense. Peter

Couple of things....... 1. The American market have the Bosch GCM 10 GD although cant see any mention or talk of it releasing in the UK market! Do you have any knowledge on this at all? 2. I’m looking for a 10” Mitre Saw but can’t afford the Kapex 120 but would have stretched to the Kapex 60 if the depth of cut was 80mm plus (even though 8.5” blade). I’m after a decent accuracy saw but feel the only decent ‘sturdy’and precise ones on the market are the Glide 12” 🙄 120 and 60. When I say I’m after a cheap one so that in a couple of years I can get say the 120 or it’s replacement I mean I was thinking of say a bosch gcm 10 Sd say £410 but I’m not convinced that it would give me great precision 🤔 and feel why not spen £250 and get similar precision? Also why doesn’t anyone seem to mention the Kapex 88? If you can answer (or begin to answer) these that would be great - make yourself a ☕️ it might take a while 😊

Hi Chris, I will answer both posts here. The design of a mitre saw is blade size dependent. The bigger the blade then the bigger the frame, the motor and so on. But the Festool design criteria started with what people working in wood on job sites really needed. They wanted portability, accuracy and a reasonable range of cut sizes at different mitre and bevel angles. The KS 60 is a good compromise in that respect. When I did my own study to settle on my choice of mitre saw the Kapex 120 and the Bosch Glide were the final pair that went head to head. The Kapex won despite it cleaning my wallet out. I have never regretted that decision. Guys on job sites want portability and accuracy and the Kapex wins on those scores. I never did see the point of the KS88 as it was not much cheaper than the KS120 but did not have as good a spec. The real bottom line is what your analysis produces, not mine. You will have some requirements that may be irrelevant to me and vice versa. Once you have made your choice and spent the money you have to live with it and human nature will make you defend your decision until you replace the product. Good luck. Peter

New Brit Workshop Appreciate the quick response. Whenever I buy something I generally want it to cover all areas in terms of quality, precision and something that will last, unfortunately I’m not in the trades but do look for something that will last incase I want to build furniture going forward and precision is the key here! Anyway like everything there’s always a better one! Only recently looked in to the Mitre saw market and honestly was pretty shocked to find you could pay up to £700.00 for a machine and it still have movement left to right on the downward action if only by a couple of mm’s. Although it emptied your wallet so to speak I bet you felt satisfied 👌🏻 Once again thanks for the reply and like every honest viewer of your videos, you do a really good clear informative job 👍🏻

Hi Chris, Buying a mitre saw is a big thing for most amateur and DIY people and so one has to look carefully. I paid the full price for my Kapex long before I even thought of doing anything on KZread. I am working on my next workshop notes video which is likely to come out in about 3 weeks time. In it I show the mitre joints that I have created for a pair of chests of drawers - they are absolutely perfect and so only require glue (no screws or dominos) to make a strong and attractive joint. Peter all brand new machines cut fantastic when new I would like someone to show what these machines cut and how they perform should we say in one year after having constant use perhaps then we would find out how good these machines are really like ?

I'm just retiring my old Makita after years of sterling service, a lovely saw. i would buy another tomorrow, but, apparently the new ones have accuracy issues. I will miss the great big table surface. I've lugged that saw on and off site 5, 6, 7 days a week for almost 20 years, a true industrial machine. Festool are ok, but have loads of faults. for instance, Ive never had to change a lead on a Makita tool.EVERY Festool I've owned has had leads replaced multiple times. Leads are over priced and poor quality. hence the detachable lead built in. It's an earner for them to be sure.

Hi Russ, It is difficult to compare like with like as the quality of construction, the accuracy of cut and ease of use need to be factored in as well. Also, having the acknowledged best dust collection on the market makes a huge difference. Peter

If you want accuracy then it is going to cost. For many people they do not require accuracy what they need is a reasonably clean cut that looks ok. And that then can mean a cheaper saw. Festool are for detailed accuracy orientated carpenters, Joiners and cabinet makers. When buying festool people can most certainly be sure of its quality. Like the way Mercedes used to be before they went mass market and cheap cars. That is the alternative for Festool creating cheaper tools that more than likely will not be as good.

What prevents it cutting deeper than 60mm? Is it the blade size? So disappointing! Seems as if they have purposely fitted it with a smaller blade otherwise I wouldn’t mind betting the sales of the 120 would diminish!

No. At that price point for them to guarantee quality they have to set limits that enables to achieve quality. Going deeper could mean a less accurate cut.

The great thing that you are able to use is the 30 day free and no quibble return policy. Under the 3 year guarantee you would have been able to get Festool to pick it up, repair it or replace it and then return it to you and all free of charge. Peter

It's not accurate, the 45° bevel function is not straight. Check before you buy. I returned 2 of them

At twice the price of competitors , it is not twice as good . There isn’t one thing , except the pretentious prestige illusion , about festool that makes them worth the excessive price.
