Il 18 Agosto, Caltabellotta festeggia il suo santo patrono San Pellegrino. La sera precedente si porta in processione la reliquia, dalla chiesa del Carmine, fino all'eremo, quest'anno con la partecipazione del Vescovo Giuseppe Marciante, omonimo dell'arciprete locale, con la tradizionale fiaccolata.
La leggenda narra che, arrivato dalla Grecia, San Pellegrino chiese ospitalità nel paese di Triokala, antico nome di Caltabellotta, ma gli fu rifiutata. Come punizione, e segno della provvidenza divina, gli alimenti che erano nelle case furono mutati in pietra (1:25). Egli fu mandato per scacciare il drago che chiedeva un tributo di bambini. San Pellegrino si sistemò sopra la grotta che ospitava il drago, e giunto il momento propizio lo rispedì negli inferi, non prima che il drago diede l'ultima impronta di se nel mondo terreno (2:00).
Poi finalmente la festa, con la preparazione della vara (3:00), fino alla processione che coinvolge anche i bambini per brevi tratti. Quest'anno inoltre, è la prima festa dopo i restauri che hanno interessato la chiesa, con la cripta sottostante (1:15), ed il monastero adiacente.
On August 18th, Caltabellotta celebrates the feast of his Patron Saint, Pellegrino. The night before, the relic of the Saint is brought in procession from the Carmine church to the monastery, this year by the Bishop Giuseppe Marciante, who shares the same exact name with the local priest.
The legend says that Saint Pellegrino, who came from Greece to free Triokala (ancient name of Caltabellotta) from the dragon, which demanded a tribute in children' lives. Once arrived in town, Saint Pellegrino was denied some basic hospitality, so the Divine Providence transformed the food that was into the homes in stones (1:25). He therefore found a place to stay, close to the cave of the dragon, and when the chance came, he sent the beast back to hell, but before the rock swallowed it, the dragon left its last imprint on the wall of the cave (2:00).
Finally the big feast (3:00), with the procession around the town, with the little children participating too, imitating the adults, in continuing the local traditions.
This year feast is the first one since 2009, year in which the Church and Monastery of Saint Pellegrino were the target of a needed restoration.
