I built a garden on top of stripped clay. Hubby leveled it off and we put 8 inches of pure compost on top. I have corn and beans and cucumbers and cantaloupe growing in that. The corn looks amazing. The beans are going crazy with growth (just starting to set fruit) Cucumbers are climbing to the top of the trellis and just starting to flower and the cantaloupe have started to run. The corn (and everything else) went crazy after the rains. Corn grew 2 feet in a week!!

But with the JLF you used not having the deficient macro or micro nutrient where the trifecta did. Thats what we're seeing here. So if you had used a more complex JLF you'd have seen way more growth then the trifecta. You really gotta get the JADAM book and read it.

Hi Rebel Jack, that is not a bad idea. The MiGardener Trifecta row doesn’t need anything at the moment. It is doing so well. We did add more Dr Earth and did add some more of the Comfrey tea w/urine to see if that helps. We will give it a couple of days and see. I suppose we could add some of our compost to all three??? We just don’t want to over fertilize the Trifecta corn. Any thoughts? I hope that made sense. 🙂 Thank you!

So it's important to understand why the MIgarden trifecta worked better in this instance. Your soil is definitely deficient in something. Something Your JADAM liquid Fertilizer didn't contain. My guess is trace minerals, magnesium, silica and a few other micro nutrients. Crop residues will out perform any store bought nutrition. Understanding why and in what application is important. Also utilizing JADAM Microbial Solution "JMS" with JADAM liquid Fertilizer "JLF" is very important. Happy growing!

JLF should not be the main fertilizer unless you have nothing else. The JADAM book mentions that JLF does not function as a base fertilizer because it has no organic matter. It is pure liquid nutrients. Solid organic matter releases nutrients slowly over time. You’d want to use JLF in addition to compost added in the spring (don’t need a huge thick layer), or raw materials like grass added in the fall. The advantage of JADAM is not convenience. It is extremely convenient considering what you’re actually doing, but it’s not going to be more convenient than buying a pre-balanced blend of of organic matter and instant release nutrients. The advantage of JADAM is the fact that you can scale it efficiently and sustainably, you can start with nothing and make large barren plots productive quickly. You’re taking control of your inputs and eliminating the costs and reliance on the outside market. Some rock dust and sea salt/rock salt would have also been a good JADAM approved way to help out your very young JLF. Plus I encourage you to try again next year when that JLF has had a chance to balance out, and I strongly encourage pairing JLF with JMS (Mr. Youngsang Cho says JMS is the most important work of the year). Not trying to be over critical but I think it’s helpful info for those who want it

Thank you Good Manners Dog Training. We frequently use comfrey tea as a fertilizer, we do use our own compost as well. I am reading the JADAM book and it states to use a 10:1 ratio. We are using a 50/50 blend right now. Do you recommend adding compost to the first row? None of the rows have organic matter on them other than the clover. Thanks for the great info. 🙂

@@RenewedHomestead compost in the JADAM row would be a better way to accurately judge for sure. Next year 2 weeks before planting is the best time to apply finished compost (or autumn for uncomposted material to break down in place over winter) Dilution ratios are a common point of confusion in the JADAM book. When your JLF is very young (weak) or very old (aged), you can usually get away with using it that strong. But in the middle (3-18 months depending on the temps) it can be very very strong and kill plants if you are not careful with dilution. There are a lot of dilution ratios mentioned for various inputs and various contexts in the book, but dilution ratios for JLF are discussed on page 187 (in my copy- second edition), 1:30 is considered the minimum but it’s better to test around 1:100 and then raise or lower from there. I have followed only the JADAM system for a few years and now everything explodes even before the JLF. My base fertilizer is grass clippings, crop residue, and autumn leaves.

Thank you. The ratios have been very confusing. I am struggling with the natural pesticides as well. It says what to use but not how much. He states to use a decoction, but typically you heat up a decoction and with the garlic he says not to heat up garlic. I am trying to figure it out as we go. Our other corn garden is doing amazing. We amended that soil early. We thought my MIL and her husband were moving here, so we just got more food in the ground. We have been using comfrey tea as 50/50 for a while with 0 issues so far. Maybe it is milder? Thanks again!

@@RenewedHomestead all the info is there in the book but you have to pay close attention to the wording AND take into consideration that the translation might not always be the most natural phrasing. It’s also easy for some important details to get lost in his writing style. It’s worth it. Most JADAM herbal solution recipes are heated but some work better without heat and some work either way. I’ve re-read the book a few times and on the second and third time it really started to click. Take notes and keep page numbers in your notes, or mark your pages. My JADAM book is full of notes lol. Youre usually not going to hurt anything if you go too strong with the JLF, the book says in the past farmers would use it undiluted and usually didn’t have issues. But it’s a risk and it’s always best to test it out on a small portion at the beginning of your season to see where the batch is at

I just saw the ingredients for the Trifecta plus fertilizer and if it contains Microbes like it says it does, then it is good stuff. However, I think there is a different reason as to why the trifecta is beating out the Dr. Earth and Jadam. If you look at the ingredients, I believe Trifecta has more solubles than the Dr. Earth if I remember the compounds correctly. Since there isn't that much microbial life in your soil since you mentioned it's a first year and hasn't ever been used for a garden, I suspect that the higher levels of nutrients in trifecta is causing the plants to respond better. The Dr. Earth is sorta meant to enhance with microbes but also has a smaller dosage of fertilizer, hence I guess the need to apply more frequently. But I do think the fact it has less water solubles than trifecta is a factor, especially in first two weeks, as to why trifecta is beating the rest. Maybe one day I'll give trifecta a try and see what happens lol

@@RenewedHomestead yeah the price of fertilizer sucks. I bought 5lbs of dr.earth from home depot for$12.58. Not terrible for 1 grow season, but not ideal. I basically got it cause up until now, my tomatoes have been on nyc compost and fertilizer laying in my house at planting which has probably run out lol.

I understand completely. We moved here two years ago and last summer was our first garden here. The land was neglected for years. The soil was terrible. We bought compost the fist year to help out the soil. We just started getting livestock last March. The animals help a lot! Lol

@@RenewedHomestead well good soil is usually at least a 5 year project but that doesn't mean you can't grow good crops, just not optimal potential lol I'm also in pots, 5gallon, 15gallon fabric, and then 20gallons and I water em everyday. Soil is also mixture of sand and vermiculite plus topped with compost layer and mulch. One 5gallon has 1/3 each of sand, Vermiculite, and pumice which I think is the best. But water everyday is a must and that means I need to fertilize less but more frequent to prevent waste from leeching out. If you guys want to inoculate your soils really quick with beneficial bacteria and fungi, there is a company called AEA (Advancing eco agriculture). I love their lectures but they have products that specifically introduce microorganisms to farms and Gardeners. That could help Kickstart it. Or maybe Google can come up with innculants. Idea is to get the mineral nutrition into the soil in the reduced form, get the microorganisms present and active to unleash the potential, and then watering everyday is a must.

Thanks Matthew. We have seen incredible growth in just a year. It is amazing what compost and animals can do. We have never heard of that company, we will look into it. Thank you! We will be starting a worm farm soon as well. We are working on it. 🙂 Our sweet corn garden is doing the best. We put chicken litter on it I’m right before winter and let the chickens and ducks in there over winter. The straw and the chickens did amazing things! We have mulch down which is helping a lot with soil retention. I am glad your garden is doing well! 🙂
